Stereotypes are real. And although in recent days, they’ve seem to be too real, causing terrifying reprocussions – Verizon is doing something about changing the narrative with it’s newest #YouDontKnowMe initiative.
Baltimore middle schooler Loden Harris became an inventor at age 13 when he turned his vision for a mobile phone charging stand into a real working product with a 3D printer. By bringing his idea to life, he shared a message to his African-American peers: “There are young black males who are preparing to make a difference in the technical world!”

Loden’s phone charging stand is just one of the more than 500 technology products including apps and 3D inventions, that African-American boys have brought to life in the last year – with the help of a new program that’s focusing on minority middle school boys. This group is often “forgotten” when it comes to programming for technology skills, despite the fact that African-American males remain one of the most underrepresented groups in STEM professions, and the “boys club” of Silicon Valley is stiflingly monochromatic.
The Verizon Innovative Learning program for minority males is a new initiative that is making sure these boys have a chance to succeed, by investing in them with marketable tech skills, mentors and access to classes on college campuses. Even more than skills, it’s helping these boys get a new picture of how they too can MAKE IT, even if they aren’t a rapper or professional ball player.
To date, the program’s reached 450 boys so far and is now expanding to 12 cities, where it will engage more1,200 young men. New data also shows the program is making an impact – increasing minority boys’ interest in STEM careers and subjects. Verizon is also hosting 100 young men from July 27th – 30th in San Francisco at an event where they will receive hands-on tech training, hear insightful lectures and experience behind-the-scenes workshop at Lucas Films and the Levi’s Stadium Gridiron Engineering & Design Lab.

These days, everyone’s a blogger, social media “expert” and a socialite, right? So shouldn’t you have a smartphone that keeps up with you, the way you live and what matters most? That’s where the new Samsung Galaxy S7 comes in. As a proud Galaxy user, I’ve been tasked to compare the S6 Edge vs the S7 and uncover why the new S7 is the best smartphone for social trendsetters below!
More storage in the S7 means, more capacity to save your favorite memories!
What’s new with the S7?
Samsung brought back the “water-resistance” feature, which was a no show in the S6/S6 Edge. The newest phones can be submerged in 1.5 meters of water for 30 minutes. That’s right! Get ready to take your new S7 underwater for Spring Break and Summer vacation!
Get ready for Spring Break and vacation fun with this water resistant smartphone.
If you’re wondering about battery power, batteries have been supercharged, boasting 3000 mAh for the S7. But the crucial difference between the S6 Edge and S7 devices is the Galaxy S7 supports microSD cards! You know what that means? More space for selfies, music, downloads and more!
The battery is still non-removable, but it has been supercharged with 3000 mAh.
The S7 Screen
The Galaxy S7 engages an Always On display, like that seen on other newer devices, but not on the S6. The S7 uses an AMOLED screen, which allows individual pixels to be illuminated. This feature allows a small number of pixels to remain illuminated, even when the device is asleep, displaying the time, the date and notifications. Which is perfect for getting a jump start on your day! (Those calendar alerts keep me on my toes for daily calls, meetings and important events.) The S7 also packs a beautiful 5.1-inch QHD screen, the detail is outstanding and has the highest display standard. The device is still readable from the latest of late nights to even the brightest sunlight.
The screen is brighter and more vibrant than ever! Day or night!
The S7 Camera
The Galaxy S6 has a impressive camera. It’s capable in low light, perfect for capturing late night shenanigans for the gram. It’s rarely overexposed in daylight and somehow manages to capture natural, vibrant colors and bring photos to life. Galaxy S7 camera has reduced the number of megapixels on the main camera from 16 megapixels to 12 megapixels. Both devices have a 5 megapixel camera. While the new camera may produce a lower number of pixels, it makes up for this with dual-pixel technology; a feature that increases image clarity.
The smartphone for social photographers!
For the true photography junkies, the camera’s aperture is also lower, at f / 1.7, which means better low-light performance. Together, these enhancements mean that the Galaxy S7 focuses up to four times faster in low-light conditions and twice as fast in daylight. Are you catching a theme here? It’s a superior smartphone for capturing late night fun indoors/outdoors, nightclubs and more!
The Socialite Smartphone
Overall, Samsung has made major improvements in the return of microSD card support, noticeable improvements in the design, low-light camera improvements and a larger battery all make the S7 an improvement over the S6 and if you’re on the social scene, you’ll love making the most of your experience with the S7 device! The Sprint and Verizon refund deadline Is here! The clock is ticking for Verizon and Sprint customers to apply for their share of a $158 million dollar refund. If you have or have had service with either mobile carrier at any point since July 2010, you are eligible to apply.
The Federal Communications Commission reached an agreement with both wireless carriers after they were investigated for “cramming ,” or charging customers without their knowledge or permission for premium third-party text messaging services for things like horoscopes, sports scores, flirting tips, celebrity gossip, and so on. Customers were typically charged about $10 per month for the unwanted services, which were buried in their bills.
AT&T and T-Mobile were part of a similar settlement last year but the deadline has passed for refunds from those carriers. Verizon has agreed to refund $90 million to customers, while Sprint is paying back $68 million. How much you’ll get back depends mostly on how many people request refunds. As part of the agreement, from now on, Verizon and Sprint must get your permission before placing extra charges on your bill. They must also provide a free service to block third party charges from your account.
Verizon is dropping the 2-year contracts on August 13th – what does that mean to you? Find out the new plans and if you’ll be saving money below!
Verizon is revamping the way its customers pay for cellphone service. The nation’s largest wireless carrier announced today that it’s doing away the practice of subsidizing your new phone in exchange for signing a two-year service contract. The company unveiled new rate plans that offer a mix of discounts and price hikes and that require customers to pay for their smartphone. Under Verizon new rates, every smartphone line is $20 per month.
Then, customers choose from one of the following four data packages:
- Small: $30/month for 1GB of shareable data
- Medium: $45/month for 3GB of shareable data
- Large: $60/month for 6GB of shareable data
- X-Large: $80/month for 12GB of shareable data
Each data package can be shared among up to 10 devices, including tablets and smartwatches, which will require a $10 and $5 monthly connection fee. Verizon new rates will be available starting Thursday, August 13th. Already a Verizon customer? You’ll be able to keep your current plan or switch to one of the new data packages.
Competition is getting pretty stiff among wireless carriers these days. Gone are the days of Verizon subsidizing phones in exchange for people signing two-year contracts. Now customers will have to either sign up for a monthly payment plan to pay for their devices or buy them outright.

Have you ever felt like you would have a greater impact on your community – or the world – if you could just amplify your voice, scale your business or hone your technology skills? Women hold less than 25% of our country’s STEM careers – it’s time to change that. During the 21st Annual Black Women’s Expo in Chicago – Verizon gave consumers insight into the opportunities awaiting them in tech (while celebrating the final days of Women’s History Month featuring trailblazing ladies of technology) with the “Unlock Your Potential” women in STEM panel.
An event designed for women by women, the Black Women’s Expo celebrates women’s aspirations and achievements and provides a platform for women to discuss solutions to the issues they confront in daily life. In its 21st year, BWE is the nation’s longest running empowerment exposition for the African American consumer, garnering attendance of more than 29,000.
Leading the conversation on innovation, the “Unlock Your Potential” panel included Lisa Laws – Engineer/Deputy COO for City of Chicago, Luvvie Ajayi – Blogger for AwesomelyLuvvie.com, and Abby Knowles – Executive Director of VZW Network in Midwest Area. During the event, panelists generated compelling conversations that inspired the audience and informed how technology is being used and STEM opportunities available. Guests left the panel with knowledge on how vast STEM truly is – whether it’s helping the lives of citizens in a community, building a nationally recognized blog, or operating the nation’s largest wireless network.
