Verizon is dropping the 2-year contracts on August 13th – what does that mean to you? Find out the new plans and if you’ll be saving money below!
Verizon is revamping the way its customers pay for cellphone service. The nation’s largest wireless carrier announced today that it’s doing away the practice of subsidizing your new phone in exchange for signing a two-year service contract. The company unveiled new rate plans that offer a mix of discounts and price hikes and that require customers to pay for their smartphone. Under Verizon new rates, every smartphone line is $20 per month.
Then, customers choose from one of the following four data packages:
- Small: $30/month for 1GB of shareable data
- Medium: $45/month for 3GB of shareable data
- Large: $60/month for 6GB of shareable data
- X-Large: $80/month for 12GB of shareable data
Each data package can be shared among up to 10 devices, including tablets and smartwatches, which will require a $10 and $5 monthly connection fee. Verizon new rates will be available starting Thursday, August 13th. Already a Verizon customer? You’ll be able to keep your current plan or switch to one of the new data packages.
Competition is getting pretty stiff among wireless carriers these days. Gone are the days of Verizon subsidizing phones in exchange for people signing two-year contracts. Now customers will have to either sign up for a monthly payment plan to pay for their devices or buy them outright.

Terrence J, Morris Chestnut, Omarion and More Team Up With Verizon Against Domestic Violence #HopelineJuly 13th, 2015 by Christen
Over the July 4th weekend, Verizon’s HopeLine program teamed up with celebrities Terrence J, Justine Skye, Omarion and Morris Chestnut to debut a powerful PSA at Essence Festival 2015 to raise awareness about an important issue that affects our communities, friends, and family members – domestic violence.
Verizon’s HopeLine program, together with Terrence J, Morris Chestnut, Omarion and Justine Skye, are asking people to take action against domestic violence in a very simple way – by donating a used wireless phone. Verizon is aiming to reach 1 million phone donations to their HopeLine program by the end of 2015. These phones are turned into vital resources for victims and survivors of domestic violence.
Now we can all make change and give hope to domestic violence victims and survivors by helping HopeLine, a phone donation and grant-giving program, reach its goal of 1 million phone donations by the end of 2015! For more information, please visit www.verizon.com/about/hopeline.

Have you ever felt like you would have a greater impact on your community – or the world – if you could just amplify your voice, scale your business or hone your technology skills? Women hold less than 25% of our country’s STEM careers – it’s time to change that. During the 21st Annual Black Women’s Expo in Chicago – Verizon gave consumers insight into the opportunities awaiting them in tech (while celebrating the final days of Women’s History Month featuring trailblazing ladies of technology) with the “Unlock Your Potential” women in STEM panel.
An event designed for women by women, the Black Women’s Expo celebrates women’s aspirations and achievements and provides a platform for women to discuss solutions to the issues they confront in daily life. In its 21st year, BWE is the nation’s longest running empowerment exposition for the African American consumer, garnering attendance of more than 29,000.
Leading the conversation on innovation, the “Unlock Your Potential” panel included Lisa Laws – Engineer/Deputy COO for City of Chicago, Luvvie Ajayi – Blogger for AwesomelyLuvvie.com, and Abby Knowles – Executive Director of VZW Network in Midwest Area. During the event, panelists generated compelling conversations that inspired the audience and informed how technology is being used and STEM opportunities available. Guests left the panel with knowledge on how vast STEM truly is – whether it’s helping the lives of citizens in a community, building a nationally recognized blog, or operating the nation’s largest wireless network.

Most people today have a cellphone that rarely leaves their side. In fact, cellphone usage is at an all-time high, with 91 percent of adults owning one, reports the Pew Research Center. While the technology has drastically improved many aspects of daily life, the cost of devices and service plans – as well as the complex contracts – leaves many people feeling like they’re being hustled.
We believe you have a right to know about the commonly believed misconceptions about the cellphone industry that are causing people to spend more than necessary. Get the facts by learning the truth about the most common cellphone myths below!
Myth: One late payment won’t affect your credit score
Reality: It doesn’t take much for your credit score to take a hit. One late payment can stay on your record for up to seven years. Because most of the top wireless carriers use your credit score to judge whether they should give you the best deals, that means one bad decision can haunt you years later. First, always make it a priority to pay your bills on time. Second, look for a carrier that considers more than a credit check to obtain the best deals.
Myth: The advertised deals from carriers are for anyone
Reality: Wireless carriers spend $4 billion advertising their “best” deals on smartphones, yet in reality, more than half of Americans cannot get the deals because they are reserved only for those with the “best” credit. According to the Consumer Federation of America, credit score plays a “vital” role in many purchases.
Myth: Almost all American adults have a smartphone
Reality: At a time when mobile connectivity is sweeping the globe, the United States ranks 13th in the world in terms of smartphone penetration ? behind a dozen countries including Australia, Israel and Saudi Arabia. There are more than 100 million American adults who don’t have a smartphone according to Pew Research and the U.S. Census Bureau. A smartphone paired with the right plan for your needs can keep you connected and benefit your budget. Furthermore, many people choose to eliminate land lines and sometimes even Internet service at home to save and then solely rely on their smartphones to stay connected.
Myth: You pay more for smartphones with no-contract plans
Reality: Consumer Reports states it’s cheaper to buy a phone through a no-contract plan. Why? Because you finance the phone separately from your wireless service and therefore once it is paid off, your monthly bill can decrease. You will not continue to pay a higher amount after that time – unlike an annual service contract plan. Research popular no-contract prepaid and postpaid plans, like Simple Choice from T-Mobile, Verizon or WalMart Family Mobile. Loyal customers can immediately qualify based on their relationship with each carrier making the best wireless deals more accessible.
It’s always super cool to get rewarded for doing things you’re supposed to do anyways, RIGHT? With so many reward-based loyalty programs around, it’s easy to forget who has the best rewards that’ll give you the biggest bang for your buck! I’ll admit, I remember signing up for Verizon Smart Rewards last year, but totally forgot that I’ve been earning points towards discounts on vacations, smart accessories and more. (I mean, accumulating 79,000 points in a few months ain’t too shabby – if I do say so myself. New gold iPad Mini, I’m on my way!)
Verizon Smart Rewards, a unique loyalty program that offers a wide variety of rewards in exchange for points, just got even better. Need more data to get you through Spring Break? Now, Verizon Smart Rewards participants can use points to get data, discounts on select devices and accessories, and more. In addition to popular discounted merchandise, travel deals, gift cards and local coupons, Smart Rewards customers can take advantage of new limited-time Verizon-specific offers:
- 1GB of MORE Everything Data for 5,000 points (for qualifying Smart Rewards customers on MORE Everything data plans; valid for one full bill cycle)
- Thousands of weekly discounts on select devices and accessories, including iOS tablets, through Daily Deals and Auctions
- Early upgrades to Verizon Edge (for qualifying Smart Rewards customers within 6 months of their upgrade date)
Earning points is easy – and they add up fast. Millions of customers already take advantage of the Smart Rewards program by earning and redeeming points for their everyday activities and interactions with Verizon Wireless.
As a reminder, Verizon customers who sign up for Smart Rewards will find at least 10,000 points waiting for them after they register (that’s more than enough for 1 GB of MORE Everything data). Activities, including signing in to the My Verizon online account management tool, paying your monthly bill, and other transactions like using the Verizon Trade In program or choosing paperless billing, will generate more points every month.
With gift cards from TJ Maxx, GAP, vacation packages and more waiting on you, what are you waiting on to sign up? It’s free, easy and Verizon Wireless Customers can visit www.verizonwireless.com/rewards to learn more and register.
