On Monday, September 8th Korto Momolu showcased her phenomenal designs during her New York Fashion Week spring show presented by SheaMoisture. Filled with a variety of textures, pastels and dynamic structures, the Project Runway All-Star accessorized the beautiful line with the definitive structured pieces of one of my favorite jewelry designers Darrell Roach Jewelry.
Thanks to the great folks at SheaMoisture, I got the details on the hair and makeup looks by celebrity makeup artist Renny Vasquez. Rich hues on the lips was the look for all using the SheaMoisture Lip Crayon in Roberta and lip gloss in Rosie for shine and deeper color.
The Darrell Roach designs that graced the models were made of lucite, copper and were an great addition to the designs that stole the show.
Inspired by her African roots, Liberian-born fashion designer and stylist Korto Momolu (pronounced Cut • Toe – Mo • Mo • Lu) is stamping her global brand on fashion forward women’s wear and accessories that celebrate the essence of her rich heritage through the use of traditional, luxury fabrics; skins; mixed prints, etc.
This beautiful dress was lined with brilliant pop of cobalt blue and that Darrell Roach designed neck peice is a great touch!
The embellished, structured shorts were quite a hit with the front row fashionistas
Flowy, chiffon gowns were also a huge hit on the runway. This beautiful gown is something I’d definitely love to wear.
Pops of tangerine in a shift dress with fishnet accessories kicked off the runway show
This floor length chiffon dress in cream definitely was a highlight of the show, especially paired with Darrell Roach necklace.
Nudes and neons is still high on the Spring/Summer trend for next year, I love how Korto Momlu paired the two colors in this ready-to-wear piece.
Glitz and glam was on the menu with this Korto Momlu sequins-embellished piece
I even got a chance to rock my favorite Darrell Roach designed jewelry piece (my ring) that I got back in 2008 in Charlotte, NC.
As the Korto Momolu brand expands, so do her accomplishments and opportunities to include designing for Miss Universe (Leila Lopes) and the President of Liberia, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf; creating an accessory line for Dillard’s Incorporated department stores; producing an eco-friendly jewelry line for the Smithsonian museum stores; designing the uniforms for the Walton Family Museum (Crystal Bridges); serving as the Cheerios’ ambassador for the Shoprite Partners in Caring “Knock Out Hunger” campaign; and contributing her time and talents to countless charitable and philanthropic endeavors. Highlighted in the ‘Top 5 Designers to Watch’ in New York City this season, Korto has been featured in many international and national publications and has appeared on numerous television shows, including two seasons of Project Runway AllStars.

Over the weekend, Beautiful Textures haircare brand and the lovely ladies behind TalkingTexture.com hosted an intimate brunch for beauty editors, hair enthusiasts and more. Held at one of NYFW’s chicest hot spots for bites, Cafeteria – guests mingled over mimosas and hot talk about beauty, hair and fashion.
Led by Ty Alexander and Christina Brown of Talking Texture, the debate over natural hair, “curlism” (aka the divide of women based on their natural hair curl pattern) and inclusion in the natural hair movement ensued and many opinions were shared. Guests shared candid thoughts on their hair and how hair versatility can make any women feel unique and beautiful from the inside out.
We checked out Beautiful Textures product line including the TMS (texture manageability system) and talked about how we manage to keep it cute with our hair during fashion week and beyond. It was a great afternoon of candid beauty talk, tips and sharing what makes us beautiful and unique – our hair. Check out photos from the fun event below.
Deena Campbell of Essence Magazine shares some beauty and hair secrets with the ladies at brunch.

If there’s one show I look forward to witnessing every season, it has to be the DVF collection by Diane Von Furstenburg herself. Always filled with statement pieces for the everyday woman, this collection houses much much than the iconic wrap dress – and that’s where the anticipation builds year after year. Who knew this season’s off-site show would house such stylish moments with gingham, the legendary Pat McGrath, fashion’s newest “IT-GIRL” Kendall Jenner and fashion icon Naomi Campbell.
My DVF fashion fun began hours before the show with lead stylist Orlando Pita (for CHI Haircare) & Beauty Guru Pat McGrath. Throughout the sea of beautiful models laughing, snapping selfies and getting their finishing touches on hair, nails and makeup – a commanding, yet motherly voice arises “Orlando, Orlando!” and in walks Diane Von Furstenburg herself.
After a few moments of praise, Diane and her team rushed to the the runway in preparation for the show rehearsal. One by one, the models dressed in bright and bold golds, blues and greens walked the runway for final approval before the big show.
Once the show began, everyone was all abuzz about Kendall Jenner walking in the show, but it wasn’t until the showstopper herself – Naomi Campbell walked the runway that upped the anti on what could be considered a great Spring show.
Filled with bra tops, baby doll dresses and plenty of leg-worthy frocks to go around, this DVF collection is definitely more vacation friendly than office friendly, but hey that’s what makes DVF so great right? I mean, we have more than enough wrap dresses to go around so this collection is a welcomed suite of fun fashions for any woman to enjoy next spring!
Check out more looks from the DVF Spring 2015 collection below.
What do you think? Do you love the collection, adore Naomi Campbell or think Kendall Jenner looked stellar? Share your thoughts below.
Are you looking for haute Spring hair trends that you can try out today? New York Fashion Week is filled with the hottest style trends from head to toe. For Spring 2015, I caught up with the man behind the stylish tresses found at the best shows that fashion week has to offer. Lead Stylist Orlando Pita for CHI Haircare creates flawless looks that are as fluid and carefree as each collection, showing that from BCBG MAX AZRIA to DVF chic simplicity is something for girl with tresses to strive for this spring.
BCBG MAX AZRIA
The Hairspiration – “The hairstyle is designed by the collection’s aesthetic– the bohemian, free-spirited woman who has style – kind of a California girl. That is why the hair is quite effortless and doesn’t look too worked on– even though it is– it has a little bump in the back and a middle-parting. It’s a nod to the pixie hairstyle, but not necessarily going retro.”
- To prep, we sprayed hair with CHI 44 Iron Guard ($15, ulta.com) to protect strands from thermal styling tools and create volume and a manageable texture.
- Next we blow dried with the CHI TOUCH Touchscreen Dryer ($199.95, ulta.com) but we didn’t use a brush, we use our fingers to make hair straight, but not stick straight.
- We then moved to the back and flat ironed the last two inches of the hair to make ends really straight using the CHI G2 Titanium Ceramic Hairstyling Iron ($159.95, ulta.com).
- We left an off-center part and at the top middle of the head we blow dried hair using just our fingers to direct hair back and get a little lift at the crown.
- We finished with CHI 44 Iron Guard Style & Stay ($15.96, ulta.com), to set the style.
- Before models hit the runway, I’ll use the new CHI Escape Cordless Styling Iron ($109.95, ulta.com / avail 11/14) for last look touch ups to smooth any frizz or flyaways.
Diane Von Furstenberg’s Spring/Summer 2015 Collection was inspired by the sun, sea, luxury and intrigue of the Cote d’Azur, and the people who spent time on the sun-soaked stretch of coastline in the 50s and 60s including Picasso, Gaudi and Bardot.
The Hairspiration – “The collection is inspired by the South of France, San Tropez with a bit of gingham and a bit of Picasso and Gaudi influence. They were around a lot in the French Riviera during the 50’s and 60’s, but the collection is more about today.” “Brigitte Bardot was often one of the people in San Tropez, so it’s all loosely based on her – that kind of undone-sexy-lots-of-hair-volume look but not done so 60-esque but more for a girl of today.” “Brigitte Bardot wasn’t perfectly done all the time, which makes her even sexier I think. Although it’s a modern take on her look, it’s not too far from what she was already doing then.”
- “We start by prepping the hair with a good amount of BioSilk Volumizing Therapy Root Lift ($12.50, ulta.com) then to get a lot of lift and volume with our blow-dry we use a large round CHI ceramic brush ($14.95, ulta, com). Then we go over some of the ends of the hair with a CHI Air 1.5″ Curling Iron.” ($59.99, JCP.com)
- “Then we go section by section putting in BioSilk Volumizing Therapy Texturizing Powder ($12.50, ulta.com) on the roots to give even more volume without teasing, because the tease is more 60’s. Then we add even more powder all over the hair to get thick, gorgeous tendrils that look piecey and undone.”
- “I finish it off with BioSilk Volumizing Therapy Strong Hold Hairspray ($15.98, beautybrands.com) to hold the look. I prefer a firm hold to natural hold spray.”
Which one of these chic hair trends inspire you to try a new look this season? Are you loving the buxom body of tresses seen at DVF or the luxe Bohemian beachy waves found at BCBG Max Azria?
The latest BCBG Max Azria collection to cascade the runway isn’t far beyond your buying reach. While getting the scoop backstage in hair and makeup (and taking selfies on Instagram with the designer Max Azria himself!) I discovered in a new social shopping twist, BCBG included “how to buy” the ready to wear runway looks by “liking” an Instagram photo from the collection.
The Instagram shopping tool stems from collaboration between BCBGMaxAzria and the LIKEtoKNOW.it service, which sends an email to users who have “liked” an Instagram photo a link to buy it from the designer’s website. In all, the design house said, nine looks were available for purchase via the new system.
If you fell in love with the spring show flowing with bohemian vibes and plenty of pale, pastels and ethereal colors like bare pink, light blush, aqua, gray violet and lavender, then you’ll be happy to know that the latest collection from BCBGMaxAzria has plenty to go around.
Designers Max Azria and his wife, Lubov, described their Spring 2015 collection as a mix of “timeless elegance with bohemian silhouettes.” The emphasis was on long, filmy garments belted at the waist, in subtle prints or, often, a simple one-color look. A white embroidered motorcycle jacket, though, was my favorite piece paired with a cotton skirt and cotton mesh embroidered top — all in white.
Check out some of my favorite pieces from the collection below.
Doesn’t it seem like New York Fashion Week was just yesterday? Well, it’s here again bigger and bolder than ever! As much as things change, some things will always stay the same, and that includes New York Fashion Week essentials. There are plenty of NYFW Survival blog posts floating around the web – (heck, I even have a video featuring my blogger boos with “How To Survive NYFW Tips” launching later this week) but what about those core values and insider secrets that NYFW vets can always count on season after season? That’s why I’m digging deep inside of designer bags everywhere and pulling out some of the key items that every blogger needs for NYFW.
1. The coveted DSLR camera (and lavaliere microphone). I mean, if you’re going to snap celebrity photos and score backstage interviews, you might as well do it with a great camera right?
2. Pack a snack and after snack – snack. Lunchables and breakfast bars FTW! I can’t tell you how many times my friends have practically starved themselves during NYFW, by simply forgetting to eat. I understand models going on strict diets leading up to and during fashion week, but that doesn’t mean that you have to too! I usually pack a snack (or two) in my purse for safe snacking while in between shows (it also eliminates that awkward growling sound your stomach makes conveniently right before the show begins in silence.)
3. Dr. Scholl’s Foot Pads. Let’s face it. Shuffling from show to presentation to meeting and then another show can terrorize your feet. I am a firm believer in comfortable shoes, but during NYFW all that goes out the window! To eliminate aching soles, I make sure to pad my feet liberally with Dr. Scholl’s Dream Walk pads for my heels and delicate (non-existing) arches. I even keep a spare pair on my in case of emergencies.
4. A smartphone, a charger and a smart microphone backup. You’re not going to be able to snap that easy-to-miss shot of KimYe perched on the front row with your DSLR, and that’s when a really good smartphone (with a really good camera) comes in. (And just in case you’re able to make your way to your favorite front-row dwelling celebrity for a quick Instagram video or interview, don’t let the loud and obnoxious crowd overpower your audio. Snag a lavaliere microphone designer for your smartphone from Best Buy or Target and get crisp, clear, noise cancelled audio to accompany your video every time!) Also, don’t even think about leaving the house with some sort of external battery or charger for your phone. (That’s blogger life 101.) After trying out countless chargers, I still come back to my favorite Samsung 9900-mah external charger. It’s versatile enough to charge any smartphone or tablet plus it’s packed with enough power to charge smartphones up to five times and tablets up to three times. If you’re going to need portable power, NYFW is definitely the time to invest in a powerful charger for your arsenal.
5. Breath Mints. Altoids for you and your friends. You know having fresh breath while chit-chatting it up with colleagues, designers and models is a must. So it’s no wonder all kinds of gums, candies and mints can be found on everyone celebrating the shows during NYFW and beyond this season.
These are just a few things I’ll be carrying around during New York Fashion Week this season – what about you? Did I miss any NYFW Survival staples that every blogger needs for NYFW? Share your must-haves in the comment section below.

CREATIVE DIRECTOR: Timo Weiland DESIGN DIRECTOR: Alan Eckstein HEAD DESIGNER: Donna Kang
Filled with plenty of patterns, prints and polka dots, the Timo Weiland show was one of the cleanest ready-to-wear shows I’ve seen all season long. The Fall 2014 collection drew on Timo’s local New York design concept, and built upon it in reflection of the Hudson River, and adventurous weekends spent upstate with friends.
Inspiration for this collection also came from a still from an unnamed Cindy Sherman film.
In the still, a woman with a short, brazen haircut is stopped on a bicycle in the middle of the road, harshly looking back at something unknown. Behind the woman is a blurred barren road, leading off into the mountains. To Timo & Alan, this translated to a vibrant take on earthy tones, textured knits, plaids, and a mix of graphic prints.
Look 25: “Ansley” Polka Dot Crewneck Knit with “Taryn” Pencil Skirt in Painted Dot.
Look 19: “Warren” Buffalo Plaid Knit with “Taryn” Plaid Pencil Skirt.
Look 6: “Carrie” Dress in blue, teal, black, and white stripe.
Look 4: “Tracy” T-Shirt in Blue Metallic Leather with “Bianca” Ottoman Knit Skirt in blue and white.

If you’re one of the “lucky ones” underneath the New York Fashion Week tents at Lincoln Center, chances are that you’re using your smartphone to death. More than likely, your smartphone is your precious baby that you use to connect with others on and offline. You use your smartphone to share your fashionable experiences, chronicle style moments and more – but did you know that you may not be using your smartphone correctly? Check out five ways to optimize your iPhone use during NYFW below…
1. Stop Keeping Your iPhone Plugged in Overnight…
Letting your iPhone charge while you sleep at night might be convenient, but it’s not the best way to keep your iPhone damage free during this busy week. Leaving your iPhone plugged in after it’s already fully charged can damage your battery over time and it could start dying more quickly. Try charging it throughout the days you can unplug it once it’s fully charged.
2. Give Your iPhone a Time Out…
You really should be turning your phone off periodically, or your battery will die faster than it should. Leaving it on and idle stresses the battery, experts say. If you, like me – use your phone as an alarm clock, consider picking up a cheap desktop alarm and shut your phone off at night (you’ll save radiation exposure AND give your smartphone the break that it deserves.)
3. Stop Leaving the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Enabled All the Time…
When your iPhone has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled and isn’t using one or both, it’s just wasting energy. As you wander around, navigating throughout the city for your next show, you’re not likely going to need or want Wi-Fi or Bluetooth all the time. You’re better off leaving both off and just turning them on when you need them.
4. Filming shows in portrait mode…
Hey you! Did you know that you’re actually supposed to film videos horizontally – not vertically? You’ve seen those videos filmed in vertically mode – not cute. Film your awesome fashion week moments the correct way, so that your friends and family can enjoy them without the “black frame of death”.
5. Protect Your iPhone With A Passcode…
According to Apple, half of iPhone users do not lock their phones. If you don’t have a passcode on your iPhone and it’s stolen, your identity and personal information is completely open and available for the thief to grab. And while you’re at it – quit walking around with your iPhone in your hand. Around 40 percent of the robberies in major cities (including NYC) now involve mobile devices, so it’s actually pretty dangerous to walk around carelessly with your iPhone out.
If you keep these tips in mind while navigating through the fashion week chaos, your iPhone will thank you and last as long as you do! Did we miss anything? What are your favorite smartphone tips and tricks you use during New York Fashion Week? Share your ideas and tips below.
