According to Bok-Hee, Lead Hair Stylist for SheaMoisture, this year’s theme was simple. “Sheer transparency enhanced by ‘moments of shine’ set the tone for the Tracy Reese collection this season. While distinctive details such as color and embellishment came into play, the vision was to keep the woman looking natural and truly authentic.”
- Fight frizz and nourish hair by working in SheaMoisture Professional Curl Leave-In Conditioner.
- Parcel out small portions of hair around the crown of the head to be set aside and gather the rest to be pulled into a low chignon.
- Apply SheaMoisture Professional Finish Blow Dry Cream throughout hair as you pull it into a low ponytail at the nape. Layer SheaMoisture Professional Vibrant Color Shine Glaze onto strands to provide the ultimate clear shine boost.
- To create the chignon, gently twist the hair from the nape of the neck to the ends, and then begin to coil it in a counter-clockwise circle. Continue to twist the hair into a bun shape using the index finger to hold it in place.Secure sides of the bun with bobby pins. Gently pull and loosen the edges of the bun to get the desired shape, then secure with more bobby pins.
- With the remaining wispy pieces of hair, apply SheaMoisture Fruit Fusion Coconut Water Weightless Texture Spray and use a teasing brush to create structure.
- Finish by spraying SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Hold & Shine Moisture Mist for hold and hydration.

As much as I love to watch the shows of New York Fashion Week – I can’t help but want to break out in a North West-esque tantrum because I want it all, RIGHT NOW! I mean, having to wait for months until the collection becomes retail ready just isn’t something I want to accept all the time – and this time the Tracy Reese Fall/Winter collection is no exception. A runway show draped in powerful femininity and hints of urban warrior chic from head to toe dominated the runway and I got the chance to see it all form together backstage.
Show preparation begins with hair/makeup and nails and thanks to SheaMoisture, I got up close and personal with the hair team behind the sleek styles that rocked the runway. China/bantu top knots styled by lead stylist Bok-Hee and the Shea Moisture team were achieved using SheaMoisture Tahitian Noni & Monoi Smoothing cream, Coconut & Hibiscus Curling Gel Soufflé and High Shine Glosser to create sleek and fierce styles for a collection of models from across the world.
Once ready to go – the models sashayed down the runway in frocks filled with patterns of Maasai reds, Ebony blacks and Cassava whites. A collection inspired by the the evolution of heritage and how it has shaped today’s modern woman. Check out my favorite (lust-worthy) looks from the Tracy Reese Fall/Winter 2015 collection below.

As New York Fashion Week comes to a close, it’s only right that I share one of my favorite annual events from the epicenter of all things fly and fashionable in NYC. Harlem’s Fashion Row events powered by Pandora kicked off fashion week fun with a Blogger’s Breakfast (sponsored by McDonald’s) as well as an editors luncheon offering a preview of the designer collections that would be gracing the runway during the 7th Annual HFR Runway Show and Style Awards.
Designer Kianga “Kiki Kitty” Peterson (K. Milele) seen with models at HFR Editors Luncheon Sept. 4 in NYC.
After media previews throughout the week, celebrities near and far gathered to NYC for the 7th Annual Harlem’s Fashion Row Runway Show And Style Awards. A show filled with designers from near and far, the HFR show is one of the anticipated runway events of each season. In addition to K. Milele designs, models dominated the runway in Harlem Haberdashery, Josh and Nicol and kept fashion fans in awe during the entire show. Discover moments from the show and surprise model appearances below.

Brandice Henderson, CEO and Founder of Harlem’s Fashion Row, has over 12 years of experience in fashion ranging from retail, buying, costing, and production. In May 2007, Henderson created HFR and produced the first fashion show which received critical acclaim and a mention in Women’s Wear Daily.
In just 5 years, Brandice moved Harlem’s Fashion Row from a small restaurant venue to the striking Allen Room at Lincoln Center. She’s gained corporate support from companies such as Target Stores, Iman Cosmetics, Sprite Green, and BET. Harlem’s Fashion Row has also been covered by NY Daily News, New York Time Out, and Jones Magazine as well as NYC TV “That’s So New York”, The Cut, NY Racked, Black Enterprise, and Centric.
Harlem’s Fashion Row is now a movement to increase diversity in fashion by producing events to teach, inspire, and encourage as well as by providing a platform for designers of color during fashion week. Harlem’s Fashion Row is a business with a purpose.
Is it just us or does NYFW suck away all of your energy too? The NYFW madness has just begun and we’ve been running to fashion shows, hopping in and out of cabs, waiting impatiently for the trains and just as quickly as it began, it’s now almost over.
Since we’ve survived another hectic fashion week we’ve decided to reward everyone for their hard work. We’re bringing our Relax, Renew and Recharge event back with AT&T and this time, we’ve moved closer to the fashion week action – just steps away from Milk Studios in Chelsea NYC.
This year, we have some amazing prizes and gift bags for all our hard-working NYFW friends and we can’t wait to catch up, talk shop and Relax, Renew and Recharge from all the fashion week excitement this season!

On Monday, September 8th Korto Momolu showcased her phenomenal designs during her New York Fashion Week spring show presented by SheaMoisture. Filled with a variety of textures, pastels and dynamic structures, the Project Runway All-Star accessorized the beautiful line with the definitive structured pieces of one of my favorite jewelry designers Darrell Roach Jewelry.
Thanks to the great folks at SheaMoisture, I got the details on the hair and makeup looks by celebrity makeup artist Renny Vasquez. Rich hues on the lips was the look for all using the SheaMoisture Lip Crayon in Roberta and lip gloss in Rosie for shine and deeper color.
The Darrell Roach designs that graced the models were made of lucite, copper and were an great addition to the designs that stole the show.
Inspired by her African roots, Liberian-born fashion designer and stylist Korto Momolu (pronounced Cut • Toe – Mo • Mo • Lu) is stamping her global brand on fashion forward women’s wear and accessories that celebrate the essence of her rich heritage through the use of traditional, luxury fabrics; skins; mixed prints, etc.
This beautiful dress was lined with brilliant pop of cobalt blue and that Darrell Roach designed neck peice is a great touch!
The embellished, structured shorts were quite a hit with the front row fashionistas
Flowy, chiffon gowns were also a huge hit on the runway. This beautiful gown is something I’d definitely love to wear.
Pops of tangerine in a shift dress with fishnet accessories kicked off the runway show
This floor length chiffon dress in cream definitely was a highlight of the show, especially paired with Darrell Roach necklace.
Nudes and neons is still high on the Spring/Summer trend for next year, I love how Korto Momlu paired the two colors in this ready-to-wear piece.
Glitz and glam was on the menu with this Korto Momlu sequins-embellished piece
I even got a chance to rock my favorite Darrell Roach designed jewelry piece (my ring) that I got back in 2008 in Charlotte, NC.
As the Korto Momolu brand expands, so do her accomplishments and opportunities to include designing for Miss Universe (Leila Lopes) and the President of Liberia, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf; creating an accessory line for Dillard’s Incorporated department stores; producing an eco-friendly jewelry line for the Smithsonian museum stores; designing the uniforms for the Walton Family Museum (Crystal Bridges); serving as the Cheerios’ ambassador for the Shoprite Partners in Caring “Knock Out Hunger” campaign; and contributing her time and talents to countless charitable and philanthropic endeavors. Highlighted in the ‘Top 5 Designers to Watch’ in New York City this season, Korto has been featured in many international and national publications and has appeared on numerous television shows, including two seasons of Project Runway AllStars.

Over the weekend, Beautiful Textures haircare brand and the lovely ladies behind TalkingTexture.com hosted an intimate brunch for beauty editors, hair enthusiasts and more. Held at one of NYFW’s chicest hot spots for bites, Cafeteria – guests mingled over mimosas and hot talk about beauty, hair and fashion.
Led by Ty Alexander and Christina Brown of Talking Texture, the debate over natural hair, “curlism” (aka the divide of women based on their natural hair curl pattern) and inclusion in the natural hair movement ensued and many opinions were shared. Guests shared candid thoughts on their hair and how hair versatility can make any women feel unique and beautiful from the inside out.
We checked out Beautiful Textures product line including the TMS (texture manageability system) and talked about how we manage to keep it cute with our hair during fashion week and beyond. It was a great afternoon of candid beauty talk, tips and sharing what makes us beautiful and unique – our hair. Check out photos from the fun event below.
