Which Starlet Could Become The Next Super Heroine In Oya: Rise of the Orisha!
March 8th, 2013 by KenyaAdmit it, at one time or another you’ve dreamed of possessing supernatural powers or imagined being a superwoman, holding the balance of good and evil within your hands. In African folklore, the goddess Oya does just that. Oya is considered to be very omnipotent; representing feminine leadership and is known to be a powerful warrior. The film, Oya: Rise of the Orisha resurrects mythical deities from African folklore, known as Orishas, into modern-day superheroes in Britain.

Who Is OYA? Oya: Rise of the Orisha focuses on a young woman named Adesuwa who has the unique ability to transform into the fearsome warrior goddess, Oya, the Orisha of change. As the Goddess of storms, her powers are similar to that of Storm from the X-Men. She brings good fortune to her followers and is the only African Orisha brave enough to confront death (as the goddess of funeral processions and cemeteries known as “Oya’s Garden.”) The film follows Adesuwa as she goes on a head-stomping mission to keep the doorway between the Orisha and humanity closed. Filled with action, mystical adventure and more the question we’re left to wonder, which British starlet could take on the role of being such a powerful warrior woman?
Check out our top picks and why below…
1. Naomie Harris

Naomie Harris has played Tia Dalma in Pirates of the Caribbean and was recently cast as Eve Moneypenny in the Oscar-nominated James Bond film, Skyfall. Being named a Bond Girl is synonymous with kick-ass sensuality, cunning intellect, and superior power- she can definitely handle the superior warrior title and is our top pick.
2. Sophie Okonedo
3. Thandie Newton
Well known for her work in The Pursuit of Happyness, Mission: Impossible II, Crash and For Colored Girls, Thandie Newton is not afraid to get physical. She is stunningly beautiful and has proved a wide acting range.
4. Marianne Jean-Baptiste
Soon to star in RoboCop (2014), Marianne Jean-Baptiste previously made history as the first Black British actress to receive an Academy Award nomination for the 1996 drama Secrets & Lies. We’ve also seen her in 28 Days and Takers. No stranger to action or sci-fi, Marianne would be another brilliant choice to bring Oya to life.

January 9th, 2013 by Christen
Last year (which was technically only 10 days ago) – I had the great pleasure of teaming up with Verizon Wireless for their #My2012Moment celebration campaign. We chatted about everything from accomplishments to milestones and everything in between that made many #My2012Moment for everyone. Some of #My2012Moment (s) definitely included: (Click here for the entire #My2012Moment list…)

New Year’s Fashionable Resolutions
January 3rd, 2013 by Fashion StaffWe’ve officially survived the Mayan Armageddon, yet another presidential election and a handful of fashion weeks the world over. But when it comes to our closets, have we really moved forward? The internet is full of New Year’s Eve fashion resolutions, but we wanted to take a more local approach to discover what our readers were really thinking. We scoured the streets of New York City to find out what style habits its citizens want to break, change, or start in the name of the New Year and you’ll never guess what resolution admissions they revealed.
Here’s hoping that that their experiments in aesthetic evolution might influence some stylish science of your own!

The Divas & Dorks Guide to Making A Fashion Resolution of Your Own:
1. Make it fit your life now, not 12 months ago.
Take a second to look at how your day-to-day schedule, commitments, personality, relationships, work life, down time, and general lifestyle have changed over the past year. Then look at your wardrobe— does the tone of your personal style match that of your personal attitude (i.e. bolder color palette for a bold personality, more tailored/body-conscious pieces for a more confident body perception, etc.)? If not, pinpoint where it’s going wrong, and reconstruct it to reflect the current you— or, on the flipside, the you who you’d like to be in the New Year.
2. Make sure it’s doable.
DO NOT, we repeat, do not aspire to spend insane amounts of money or to rack up ridiculous credit card bills in the pursuit of your fashion revolution resolution. Do what the real fashionistas do— emulate design, not etymology. Rather than getting hung up on labels, make a pros-and-cons list of what you love about your favorite designers’ designs, and scour your favorite stores for their more-affordable incarnations. Allow yourself to invest big bucks on one piece that simultaneously captures your new attitude and straddles fashion borders (i.e. day-to-night or work-to-downtime).
3. Commit to the change.
Don’t be afraid to break your former fashion cycles. Trust that those who love you will welcome your fashion attitude as a reflection of a new and better you on the inside— that the change in your style cycles reflects a renewed sense of confidence and a reinvestment in self.

We’re Counting Down Our Favorite Moments Of 2012 #My2012Moment
December 31st, 2012 by ChristenIt’s true! This year has had truly been an amazing year of highs (and even higher highs) for DivasandDorks.com. From going to 2012 London Olympics to speaking at the National Black MBA Conference and everything in between. While looking forward to a better year than ever before – 2013, we can’t help but to look back at our favorite moments of 2012. Check out below to discover why this has been an unbelievably phenomenal for DivasandDorks.com.
Black Women in Music / Black Women in Hollywood
Thanks to Lincoln & Essence Magazine, we had the chance to rub elbows, talk tech and mingle with some of your favorite starlets, musicians and Hollywood celebrities. Kelly Rowland, Nene Leakes and more checked out the new 2014 Lincoln MKZ during Essence’s Black Women in Music, Grammy weekend in California. Just a week later, Kerry Washington, Shonda Rhimes, Tracee Ellis Ross supported and uplifted fellow thespian sisters during the Black Women in Hollywood event during Oscar weekend in L.A.
In The Press – Essence.com, RollingOut.com, BlackEnterprise.com, TheRoot.com, Pose Magazine
This was an incredible year for DivasandDorks.com in the press. As a contributor for Essence.com, I was featured in RollingOut & Pose Magazine highlighting the business behind the blog. BlackEnterprise.com even interviewed an unconventional mentor, (my mother) to reveal the secrets behind successful mentor/mentee relationships. Before the summer was complete, TheRoot.com listed DivasandDorks.com as one of the best blogs of 2012.
Induction in Black Enterprise Magazine’s Top Of The Blogosphere’s Best
One of my favorite moments by far included kicking off this year’s Black Bloggers Month as being revealed as the first inductee in the 2012 Blogosphere’s Best for BlackEnterprise.com.
Kayaking in the Pacific Ocean
During an exciting west coast excursion with Toyota, I had the best time camping and even kayaking, (yes, I really kayaked) in the Pacific Ocean all by myself.
Diva, Dork and Actress?
This year marked a year of firsts in front the camera, as I starred in Ford’s Escape To New Orleans web series and Samsung’s SmartTV informercial series.
Panelist, Host & Keynote Speaker
“When you’ve worked hard, and done well, and walked through that doorway of opportunity, you do not slam it shut behind you. You reach back, and you give other folks the same chances that helped you succeed.” – Michelle Obama
This year has been filled with a lot of hard work, blessings beyond belief, and I was more than excited to share my experiences as a speaker/host/keynote speaker at the Financial (App)titude seminar, Style Bloggers of Color Conference, National Association of Black MBA, Charlotte Chamber of Commerce and the Tom Joyner Family Reunion.
Mentorship & Inspiring Young Lives
As an active mentor for The Young Women’s Leadership Schools in NYC and host of D&D’s first “Social Girls Night” – we at Diva And Dorks believe in investing & encouraging young women to pursue their dreams, passions and more (and because of those beliefs, the Divas and Dorks Foundation was officially formed.)
Global Ambassador at the 2012 London Olympics
As Samsung’s official ‘Global Ambassador’ – I was privileged to represent Team USA at the 2012 London Olympics. I got the chance to meet Olympians, take in a few of the Olympic games and experience all the unique sights of London, England.
Last Train To Paris…
For the first time ever, I experienced a dream getaway to Paris, France from the United Kingdom (during the Olympics). The Effel Tower, The Louvre, Musée d’Orsay, Arc de Triomphe and the Champs-Elysée all were seen and conquered by the diva!
Divas Love To Travel & Love Their Cars!
This has been an amazing year of travel and automotive adoration on DivasandDorks.com. So much so, that our sister sites DivasOnDestinations.com and DivasDriveInHeels.com were born and slated to launch January 2013!
Here’s to a wonderful 2012 and an even better 2013!!!! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

3 Steps to Get a Head Start on Your New Year’s Resolutions
December 21st, 2012 by Lifestyle StaffThe countdown to the New Year has begun! Many are now declaring their excitement for a “New Year, New Me”. The most common resolutions year after year are kicking bad habits, improving finances, advancing in careers, having a more positive attitude and/or better love life, losing weight and lastly, eating healthier. Every year many of us wait until the clock strikes twelve to change our ways, and every year more than half of us don’t make it through the entire month before we are back to our old habits. Yet, people continue to make the same resolution every year, in hopes that this year their commitment will finally stick.
Others have simply stopped making New Year’s Resolutions all together. Those who don’t make resolutions might be onto something. Here’s why: You’ve already had over 300 days of cringe-worthy dates, disappointing paychecks, and heavy duty moments weighing in on what areas of your life need improving. The anti-New Year’s Resolutions people have not given up on changing their life for the better. Instead their mindset is “why wait another month to make a change, when the first day of you working on the “new you” could be today?”

With three simple steps you can set yourself up for success and have a better a chance at not dropping the ball before the ball drops.
1. Prepare
The first step towards weight loss has always been going to the gym and signing up. Of course, after the first great workout the motivation wears off and the only thing getting smaller is your bank account as the automatic monthly fee -for the membership you stopped using- continues to deduct itself. Like any resolution, deciding to get in better shape by preparing to do so is an action-oriented step. While preparing to make self changes the most important thing to do is research. Look into how much you want to lose, how much you want to save up, etc. and decide on a realistic time frame to make it happen.
Then set up your environment so that your goal is attainable. For example, many people choose a gym based on the best deal or the amenities, but finding a gym that you are going to visit often is all about location, location, location! Find a gym that’s close to your job so you can fit in a workout before you clock in, during lunch or right after you clock out. Also, always have your gym bag stocked and at the door so there is no excuse to leave home without it.
2. Practice
Once you have found a place that fits your needs, location, and schedule it’s time to put your plan into practice. Play around with different types of workouts until you find something you like and fall into a rhythm. It’s about building up until your practice becomes an enjoyable routine. It’s not about perfection. Start with one day a week and continue to build. Try going at different times on different days to see which are best for you. Try out different equipment until you find the ones that will help you reach your ideal body shape.
3. Persist

Preparing through planning and research, then practicing until you get into a comfortable groove helps you to build a foundation so that you can persist to the finish line.
Persistence is the driving force when you’re having a bad day or don’t feel as motivated. It’s the voice in the back of your head that keeps reminding you that you’ve already come so far. Once you have this your resolution has become a habit. These steps can apply to any of the things you want to improve about yourself. The key is being proactive. Many of us never leave the starting line, or lose steam early because we think of the resolution as a solution, as opposed to the first step in a proactive decision to be a better version of ourselves. Think about it, if you are proactive about taking the necessary steps to self improvement now, then by the first day of the New Year you will be ahead of the game.
Tell us some of your resolutions and how you plan to keep them below…
‘What Were They Thinking?’ Celebrity Moments of 2012
December 19th, 2012 by Tiffany12.
Evelyn Lozada and Chad “Ocho Cinco” Johnson definitely shocked the world in August of 2012. Johnson, 34, was arrested on a misdemeanor domestic violence charge after he allegedly head-butted Lozada during an argument. Lozada was treated for a “pretty good-sized” laceration to her forehead. While the situation was physically damaging to Lozada, it was detrimental to Johnson’s football career. We bet he’ll never head-butt another soul.

Comedian Katt Williams had a double whammy that left everyone wondering what is wrong with him?! After a high speed police chase in California, Katt went into a Target store and was caught on camera slapping an employee! He then did a tearful news interview after another altercation at a Seattle restaurant saying he was “done with stand-up comedy”.
If you missed it watch an out of it Katt Williams give his statement after the incidents.

Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson has definitely made a name for herself this year. Landing her own reality show on TLC, she has also recently appeared on Barbara Walters‘s Most Fascinating People of 2012 list. While she has had many memorable moments on both Toddlers and Tiaras and spin-off Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, her guest appearance- or lack of appearance- on the Dr. Drew show lands her on our 2012 memorable moments list as she defiantly expresses her boredom on camera.
If you missed it watch her doze off on Dr. Drew here.

Nicki Minaj confused, shocked and even scared a few during her February performance at the 2012 Grammy’s in Los Angeles. She performed Roman Holiday sitting next to The Pope and called the performance “The exorcism of [Nicki's alter ego] Roman.” Choreographed by Laurieann Gibson, it featured religious imagery, pyrotechnics, and backup dancers dressed as monks. The performance may -or may not- have been a mock of the Illuminati conspiracies, but it definitely rubbed many the wrong way.
How To Prioritize Healthy Relationships In Time For The New Year
December 18th, 2012 by Christen
We’re in full throttle of the holiday season, and with Christmas next week and 2013 a mere two weeks away – it’s safe to say that everyone’s re-evaluating all types of relationships this season. If you’re not, then might I suggest taking this time to evaluate each interpersonal relationship that you currently have in your life. Relationships between you and your family, friends, business relationships and even romantic relationships can be tricky all year round… and when unaddressed unhealthy relationships begin to affect other relationships in our lives? Watch out! Check out this sneak peek clip of this week’s Mary Mary episode below…
Recently, I got the chance to check out a full sneak peek of this week’s episode of Mary Mary on WeTV and I realized that no matter what phase of life you’re in, the holidays are always a great time to prioritize healthy relationships in all areas of your life, just in time for the new year.

Need help figuring out what you can do today? Check out a few tips on creating & prioritizing healthy relationships in your life below…
TIP 1: Take responsibility for your own happiness. Save yourself unnecessary hours of arguing by remembering this one rule: it’s not up to anyone else to make you happy. Sure, you can choose to be in a relationship with this person and derive joy and happiness from it, but it’s not anyone’s responsibility to dig you out of a pitty-party pit every day. Remember that everyday, and you’re well on your way to enjoying happy & healthier relationships into the new year.
TIP 2: Devote time to each other. Make spending time with your partner or important people in your life a priority, even if it’s a little inconvenient at first. Relationships need shared experiences to grow, and you’re demonstrating that nurturing yours is important to you. Trying to develop stronger working relationships, use networking opportunities and invest time in nurturing the relationship. (The same goes for interpersonal relationships as well.)
TIP 3: Develop better communication. Most people aren’t born great communicators — it’s something nearly everyone has to work at. Relay your expectations. If you expect your partner to do something, say it. Don’t expect that he or she should read your mind, and don’t rely on hints. Being clear about what you want gives your partner a fair shot at succeeding. Say “please” and “thank you.” You should be able to let loose around your partner, so there’s no need to worry about having impeccable manners all the time.
Balancing healthy family and business relationships doesn’t take holidays or vacations. Curating a variety of great relationships in your life takes time and plenty of designated efforts – but during this season of reflection, remembering to take just a few extra steps could lead you into the new year and beyond with host of healthy relationships.
