Need WiFi? The Library Lets You Check Out A Hotspot (Like A Book) For Free

December 12th, 2014 by Tech Staff

library hotspot

Long gone are the days of library books and trolling the aisles of your local library for research and entertainment.  Around the country, the old institution is still going strong, but the New York Public Library is standing out by adapting to the changing times and offering a new service; the ability to check out WiFi. According to the Wall Street Journal, beginning later this month, New York City residents will be able to check out wireless Internet hubs at no charge from their local library. Over 10,000 WiFi units will be made available in Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn public libraries, thanks in part to a $1 million donation from Google.

Besides growing demand for such services and the need to stay relevant in our digital age, the initiative is part of New York’s most recent attempt to provide everyone in the five boroughs with WiFi. A related project includes turning about 6,000 of NYC’s payphones into WiFi hotspots as well.  For the almost 2.5 million city inhabitants who don’t have Internet at home, this initiative could be a huge boon to those who need access for work, online learning programs or job hunting.  A chance to check our email wherever we go and help out less advantaged folks? This is a program we can totally get behind.

What do you think?  Would you utilize a service like this at your local library?  Share your thoughts below!

Can You Hear Me Now? Verizon Is Bringing Calls Underground

January 29th, 2014 by Tech Staff

NYC Verizon customers rejoice!

You can now make and receive calls, texts and access the Internet at 35 subway stations throughout the city.  Verizon announced on Tuesday that it will bring its voice, 3G and 4G LTE data services underground to various New York City subway stations.

Verizon Wireless says it has invested more than $4.5 billion across the New York City region since 2000.

The news is not only important for convenience, but also for security. When Verizon customers dial 911, the dispatcher will automatically know if that call is coming from underground and be able to detect the exact platform from which the call was made.

The stations are largely on the west side of Manhattan, from 23rd Street to 96th Street, including the Times Square, Herald Square, Rockefeller Center, Lincoln Center and Columbus Circle stations.

To quickly find stations that have wireless service on-the-go, please visit Transit Wireless’ mobile-friendly website at www.NYCSubwayWireless.com .

Nicki Minaj & Nokia Lumia 900 Times Square Takeover (VIDEO)

April 9th, 2012 by Christen

Nokia brought Times Square to a standstill on Friday as thirty-thousand people watched one of the biggest electronic take-overs of the iconic New York landmark for the launch of the Nokia Lumia 900. Using the latest CGI technology the team behind the massive Hollywood blockbuster, i-Robot, created one of the world’s largest LED displays.

Nokia took control of nine of the square’s famous electronic screens to ensure the crowd was immersed in light and music from every direction.

The light show was introduced by international superstar Nicki Minaj, who sang a medley of tracks from her new album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded.

Dozens of the world’s leading visual artist worked for more than 5,000 hours, day and night for more than three weeks, to create the hundreds of jaw-dropping effects that were used on the large screens.

All of the electronic screens were controlled from a mobile server that was fed by eight miles of cable spread over four square blocks of the city.

Combining real dancers with 200ft high computer generated graphics, a building in the square was turned into a living, breathing entity. It was made to appear as though it was filling with water and then “melting” in front of the crowd.

The ground-breaking visual event, to launch the Nokia Lumia 900 in North America, was choreographed to an exclusive Nokia Lumia remix of Minaj’s hit ‘Starships’, performed live by DJ and producer Doorly.

Watch the full experience below…

Nicki said about the big concert:

“To see the idea on paper was amazing but to see it for real blew me away. It brought Times Square to a standstill. The absolute bonus for me is that my fans, who have been so loyal to me, are now part of the video for the Starships Nokia remix.”

“Performing in my home town of NYC the same week as the release of my new album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded is amazing and it really is a dream come true.”

The Nokia Lumia 900 will be available exclusively in North America from AT&T from April 8 for $99.99. With 4G LTE speeds and outstanding design, the Nokia Lumia 900 lets customers access their email, music and social media quickly.

Calling All NYC Tourists & Transplants…There’s A New App Just For You!

April 2nd, 2012 by Christen

With over 50 million tourists annually, New York City is launching a better map to help them navigate a little easier or at least one that makes it easier to patronize city businesses.  A new iPhone map app from the city’s official tourism center portrays businesses not as little red pins, but with their logos. It incorporates social media updates, OpenTable booking capabilities and daily deals directly into the map.

The app is a co-branded version of a map app called CityMaps that launched earlier this month. By hooking into a bundle of APIs, it’s able to expand beyond capabilities of a typical online map.

Store owners can claim their spot on the map in order to curate their presence on it, and eventually the startup hopes to make money by charging them for some of these privileges.

Advertisements for the new co-branded version of CityMaps will appear on bus shelters, on taxicab video screens and even on a Time Square jumbotron.

Which NYC based apps are you currently using to navigate through the “concrete jungle where dreams are made of”?  Would you use this new app as an NYC tourist, transplant or original borough dweller?

Hurricane Survival Kit & Must Have Gadgets…

August 26th, 2011 by Christen

Okay East Coasters, by now you’ve heard from President Obama and your local government authorities about the impending damage that Irene is bringing your way, now it’s time to react.

Do you have a “Go Bag”?

Create your ‘Go Bag’ and Emergency Supply Kit

A “Go Bag” is a collection of items you may need in case of an emergency evacuation. Every person in the house should have a “Go Bag” stocked and readily accessible in case you have to leave your home or office in a hurry. Your best option for the bag itself is a backpack, which leaved hands free so you can carry a flashlight, a cell phone, or hold the hand of a loved one. A backpack on wheels or a rolling suitcase is a good alternative.

In wake of any impending disaster or in this case Hurrican Irene, here’s your must have list of items & gadgets to have packed in your emergency supply kit.

Your “Go Bag” should contain:

  • Copies of your important documents in a waterproof Ziploc bags. Insurance cards, ID, proof of address, special family photos.
  • Extra house and car keys
  • Credit and ATM cards
  • Cash. Carry about $50 to $100 in small denominations (just in case).
  • Bottled water and nonperishable food. Energy and granola bars are good options.
  • At least one flashlight and extra batteries. (LED flashlights are more durable and last 10 times longer than traditional ones.)
Energizer INRUB22EH Industrial Rubber LED Flashlight
  • A manual radio or battery-operated radio. Manual radios often have cell phone charging features, solar power options, flashlight, siren and compass.

Coby CX50 Compact AM/FM Radio with Digital Display

  • Medical: Keep a list of medications for each family member, why they take it and the dosage. Pack along any extra medication, if you have it.
  • Extra eyeglasses, if you have them.
  • First Aid kit
  • Waterproof matches, Swiss Army knife, Sharpie markers to write ID info on children, rain ponchos, thermal blankets, extra socks and undies.
  • Feminine hygiene items, diapers, if you need them.
  • Small map of the region
  • Items to relieve anxiety: Playing cards are a good way to keep occupied – no batteries needed.

Express Breaks Guinness Record

July 27th, 2011 by Christen

From record-breaking weather to record-breaking runways…while the temps were breaking records in NYC this past weekend, the clothing brand Express was breaking them, as well: 1,243 Express fans walked in a Times Square runway show to earn them the Guinness World Record for most people to walk a catwalk. Participants rocked “Model for a Minute” t-shirts and cat-walked along with the NYC Naked Cowboy. Afterwards, they debuted their holiday collection with actual models—though we doubt they looked any less melted than the regular people. Not a bad way to spend a sweltering Saturday.

If you’d been there, would you have walked in the Express show?

Fashion140 Takes NYC!

April 20th, 2011 by Christen

Join Divas and Dorks on May 4, 2011 along with representatives from the world’s leading fashion namesakes where we will convene at the Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall for the inaugural Fashion140 Conference. Fashion, media experts, celebrities and innovators will come together to discuss the growing impact of emerging social media and technological advancements on the style-driven industry. With over 60 leading speakers from Facebook, Twitter, Google Boutiques, Gilt Group, Urban Outfitters, Neiman Marcus, Bonobos, Hautelook, Kmart Fashion and Time Inc., to name a few, and a dynamic program made of short speaking slots and panels, the conference aims to showcase a unique global perspective of the fashion industry and its future.

Fashion140 is co-curated by Jeff Pulver, producer of 140 Characters Conference, which analyzes effects of real-time internet on businesses in varying industries and Lilly Berelovich, CEO of Fashion Snoops, an innovative online forecasting service. The partnership started at one of Jeff’s event where the two met and deiced it is time to narrow down the focus on the fashion market. “Not many people know that clothing has the largest sales value of all eCommerce categories”, said Jeff Pulver, “Surprisingly it still makes only 7% of the total 370B$ spent overall on clothing, which demonstrates the unrealized potential. To effectively compete it is imperative for retailers and brands to establish clear digital and social media strategies”. Conference discourse will cover topics such as the changing face of retail, customer engagement, celebrities and social media, real-time fashion reporting, and social return on investment. “Aside the obvious well-oiled marketing-driven fashion brands are leading the social media revolution, we see many old-school businesses that still look the other way”, says Berelovich, “but the change is eminent; with retail shifting to new types of e-commerce, with direct brand-to-consumer engagement and personalized social shopping environments, whoever stays behind may miss the boat. These are just a few examples we will be discussing at #fashion140”

For detailed information regarding speakers, plan, sponsorship opportunities, and press access, please visit www.fashion140.com. Make sure to follow @DIVASANDDORKS for special ticket discounts leading up to the event OR you can just click HERE for your special discount compliments of Fashion140 and DivasandDorks.com (a portion of proceeds from these ticket sales will be donated to charity.)  Get your tickets today, seats are limited.
