Recently, I had the opportunity to upgrade my in-home audio system using HEOS by Denon wireless sound system. What is HEOS you ask?
HEOS by Denon is a Wireless Multi-Room Sound System comprising a family of great-sounding music players for your whole home. You can enjoy your favorite streaming music services, internet radio or your own music collection and set-up is a breeze. There’s even a free app to control them from your iOS or Android phone or tablet.
The HEOS5 is ideal for medium to large rooms such as dining rooms, larger bedrooms, offices or smaller living rooms. Because the HEOS5 is pretty portable, I’ve been enjoying my upgraded listening experience in my bedroom as well as using it in the kitchen as well. If you live in large home, the HEOS system of multiple portable speakers is for you. The HEOS3 ($299.98) is ideal for smaller rooms, such as bedrooms or bathrooms, and are easy to move around the home. Every year, an oasis of new media thinkers, music lovers and film fans migrate to Austin, Texas for an amazing week of learning, entertainment and more – this is known as South By Southwest. The SXSW 2014 festival hosts over a week of entertaining keynotes, sessions, film premiers and concerts and this year promises to be bigger and better than ever before.
Just what am I looking forward to at SXSW 2014?
There are tons of sessions for entrepreneurs, techies and social media savants to choose from. Just a few of the Interactive sessions I’m excited to learn from highlight Black Social TV talks and even tackle the subject of the Black Twitterverse jumping into the Startup life and being a real woman in a new media world. I’m beyond excited to catch up with friends and make new connections during my SXSW Interactive experience in Austin.
One of the most entertaining moments of SXSW take place during many of the first look film screenings. This year, I’m looking forward to attending the screening of the Jimi Hendrix biopic, “JIMI: All Is By My Side” starring Andre (3000) Benjamin as the iconic Jimi Hendrix. With celebrity lead talks from the likes of Mike Myers, Tilda Swinton, Jason Bateman and more – the film sessions and screenings will be another huge highlight of the entire SXSW experience.
While I’m not exactly certain what new music and musicians I’ll discover this year, I will say that the likes of Prince, Jay Z and others have graced Austin during the SXSW festival and this year is sure to be no different. I mean, last year I literally bumped into Macklemore while in the city streets of Austin and a year later he’s one of music biggest stars to date! With performances by NAS, SchoolBoy Q, Bridgette Kelley and Slaughterhouse already scheduled the surprise performances will only heighten the musical expectations for the year. The SXSW music festival of shows will definitely be the grand closing of my Austin experience and I can’t wait to see what musical experience it holds.
Can’t make it to Austin for SXSW this year? Don’t Worry! Catch all the SXSW fun and get a unique Austin experience with “Austin Uncovered”. The “Austin: Uncovered” web series highlights all best that SXSW has to uncover, plus the best in food, sights and entertainment that you can find in Austin all year long — and it’s hosted by me! Eve is back on the scene! She premiered her new music video directed by Peter Hamblin on BET’s 106 & Park this Monday. The track entitled E.V.E. is from her upcoming album Lip Lock to be released on the record label From the Rib.
Before we get into the video, let’s talk about the name of the record label she’s signed to for a second, and how this may be a match made in heaven! We all know the biblical story about how Eve was created to be the first woman on earth. Well, the rapper who shares her name may not have been the first woman in hip hop but she definitely made her mark as the first lady of the RUFF Riders crew when she debuted on the scene. Let’s be real, Adam’s life didn’t get interesting until his lady appeared. With this new release Eve is metaphorically stepping out of the rib that is the male dominated rap industry, announcing that she never left as she chants on the chorus, “Ain’t no guessing it’s E.V.E / I’m the champ they wish they be… Stay on top, no touching me.”
The beat on this song “goes hard” as the young say. It has an edgy sound that is accompanied by the necessary authoritative lyrics to make a hit. She opens it up by reintroducing herself just in case you forgot and then takes a moment to pay tribute to her long-term fans in the second verse. At the beginning of the video Eve is wearing a military inspired look probably to reinforce her standing as one of the matriarchs in the game. She spends the rest of the video walking through the streets and cruising in the back seat of a car wearing a gray tank, high-waist jeans, a simple necklace and an assortment of gold bracelets. Her makeup is flawless and her long tresses frame her face partly covered by a slouchy hat. A very classy-gangsta look we could expect from the first lady of rap.
Lip Lock will be Eve’s first album since 2002. From the sound of this song and her presence in the music video it looks like Eve is coming to stomp the competition …in heels! Lip Lock, is set to be released on May 14, 2013.
See a clip of the video here:
There’s nothing better than something new and new music is always “music to my ears”. (A phrase coined to describe news that is pleasing.) Music, too, should be pleasing to the ears in the same way that good news is when someone uses that phrase. If you feel the radio waves are not delivering the best right now, like we do, here are some up-and-coming artists whose music will definitely bring fresh sounds of pleasure to your ears. Here are five artists on the rise to add to your digital playlist, now!
1. B.J. the Chicago Kid
B.J. the Chicago Kid has been in the music industry for a while but has always been in the background as a back-up and songwriter. Finally the South Side Chicago-bred guy is now at the forefront. Signed to Motown shortly after being featured on some Kendrick Lamar records and releasing his debut album Pineapple Now-Laters, B.J. the Chicago Kid seems to have a promising future. Download Pineapple Now-Laters and other tunes from B.J. the Chicago Kid on iTunes orAmazon.
2. Marian Mereba
Marian Mereba is an Ethiopian-American singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist who has been honing her artistry in Atlanta, GA. She’s gained a diverse fan-base from her fresh sound and intimate presentation. With production assistance from Berklee College of Music graduate John Key and Wondaland Arts Society‘s young prodigy Roman GianArthur, Marian has created a one-of-a-kind sound with the Room for Living EP. This is the first release from the independent artist, and was recorded entirely in her living room! These are the type of albums that will resonate with music lovers across the world. Download it on her Bandcamp!
3. Joey Bada$$
Joey Bada$$ is young and talented. Born in 1995 and raised in Brooklyn, New York the rapper has been described as “nice.” He is an independent artist and producer who is also a member of the hip hop collection Pro.Era. With the release of his mix-tape 1999, released in June of 2012, Joey Bada$$ received a lot of recognition and offers from record labels. He is still independent but with all he has his hands in we can expect to see much happen in 2013. Download 1999 on DatPiff.
Top Dawg Entertainment signee Ab-Soul is just that; Soulful in the way he delivers lines. From Carson, California he is ¼ of the Black Hippy movement. You’ve probably heard Ab-Soul, who calls Kendrick Lamar one of his inspirations, on Kendrick’s Section.80. Download Long Term and Long Term 2 on DatPiff. Download Control System on iTunes.
5. Jhené Aiko
This Los Angeles based artist has been seen opening for Nas and Solange for some time now. She considers herself a writer, a singer, and a student of life. Aiko was signed by a record label at the age of 12, but is coming into her own and garnering support in her early twenties. Her Facebook page reads, “sailing soul(s) is my first of many offerings to any and everyone who will listen and pay attention.” Download her offering on her official website.
Have you been playing any of these artist in your ear buds? Who are some new artists you have been listening to lately?
Timbre. – It is the character or quality of a musical sound or voice as distinct from its pitch and intensity. It is also the name of an app, developed by Intrepid Dev, that gives users a list of concerts based on their location. Discover how the Timbre app can help you score those hard to find tickets near you. If you’re an iPhone user who loves live music, I’d say give the Timbre app a download today – discover why below…
How it works: Tap the Timbre icon. With that tap, the app finds your location and compiles a list of events near by. Once you get your list and find an artist of interest, users can click on their name, listen to a snippet of their music and get directed to SeatGeek, where their can purchase to the concert at the selected venue on their selected date. Timbre can search between a 1- and 50-mile radiuses. You can also use the search bar to browse events in other locations. This is a great feature for Divas who travel.
According to a piece on Fast Company, Intrepid Dev CEO Mark Kasdorf says the app development firm is planning to expand the app to do even more. One of these new features will be a map that will show all of the nearby venues.
With the hype surrounding Sunday’s 55th Annual Grammy Awards Ceremony, Timbre created a list of category nominees. Using the app, I looked up some of them to see if they had concerts any time soon. Here are events on the east and west coast happening over the month featuring Grammy-nominated artists.
Pink at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on February 16th, 2013. Buy tickets.
Maroon 5 at Madison Square Garden in New York on February 16th, 2013. Buy tickets.
Alicia Keys and Miguel at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on March 12th, 2013. Buy tickets.
Are there any other mobile apps you can use to buy concert tickets?
Have you tried Timbre? Still looking for Beyonce tickets? Maybe you should give Timbre a try…
If you were tuned into to television on Friday night, you would’ve noticed R&B superstars Jennifer Hudson and Usher were among the singers and celebrities who paid tribute to Whitney Houston during the CBS special ‘We Will Always Love You: A Grammy Salute to Whitney Houston,’ which aired Friday (Nov. 16).
Actors LL Cool J, Taraji P. Henson and Halle Berry also paid tribute to Nippy during the telecast. “She inspired a generation of little girls and women to believe in their own dreams and to know that they had within themselves the greatest gift of all,” a choked-up Berry said. “I was one of those little girls who then became a woman who never ever, ever stopped loving Whitney Houston.”
The late pop icon, who passed away on Feb. 9 of an accidental drowning, had a major influence on everyone involved in the show. Although Whitney is no longer with us, her musical legacy continues to gloriously live on.
The standout fashion performance of the evening was undoubtedly Celine Dion. A dress clearly designed with the use of virgin fairy dust & freshly spun gold, days later this dress still leaves a magical impression. Celine lends her talents and amazingly magical styling to the evening, performing a rendition of ‘The Greatest Love of All”… see her magically delicious dress and performance below…

The 40th Anniversary of the American Music Awards aired Sunday night on ABC with memorable performances, award wins, fashion wins and notable fashion losses. Here’s a rundown of the winners with a few fashion winners and losers below… (you be the judge…)
Jordin Sparks hits the red carpet at the 40th annual American Music Awards showing off her killer bod in a sexy, skin-baring printed dress layered over black fishnet. Paired with a slick ponytail, Sparks is giving a majorly sleek, just-vampy-enough look.
Kerry Washington arrives on the 2012 American Music Awards red carpet. Gladiators REJOICE! ‘Scandal’s Olivia Pope, looked gorgeous on the red carpet wearing a yellow lace dress from Stella McCartney. What do you think of her look?
Golden delight or Not Quite Right? R&B Songstress Brandy and Pop’s Provocateur Pink arrive dazzling in gold, but something is missing with both looks. Brandy’s look is far from “gold star” rating while Pink’s look is giving some sort of modern day Roman-esqe soldier.
Maybe Pink coordinated her look from an unlikely source….like Kim Kardashian? After all, Kim did debut a similar Kardashian look in blue earlier this year…
Who do you think rocked this stylish, floor length frock better? Pink or Kim Kardashian?
Nicki Minaj has the internet buzzing over this neon green gown. This look is a bit more mature for Nicki who’s known for donning multicolored hair and hot pink chicken wing necklaces. But alas, it is the American Music Awards. What do you think?
Taylor Swift arrives wearing a long-sleeved Zuhair Murad mini featured a seriously sexy open back and gorgeous gold detailing. While the star may have stayed away from her signature, (a shimmering, strapless gown silhouette), she still opted for a little gold sparkle, giving us a hint of Taylor in a whole new sexy style.
Carrie Underwood opted for a wine colored Abed Mahfouz frock for the red carpet and walked away looking stunning…
“Call Me Maybe” singer Carlie Rae Jepson opted for more all-over shimmer in a halter dress by Gomez Gracia. With a floor-skimming length and a body-hugging silhouette, she manages to work the formal number without making it look like she’s on her way to prom.
Kelly Rowland went for a subtile icy look with Naeem Kahn on the red carpet. The “Ice” singer went for an overall sleek look to combat the graphic detail dress.
