Drivers Could Soon Get Busted Texting While Driving By Police Textalyzer Scanners

April 19th, 2016 by Christen

Are you still texting and driving?  It’s already common knowledge that texting while driving leads to the many fatal car accidents, but there’s now a bill that can arm the police with a textalyzer to catch you texting from behind the wheel.

textalyzer

Some New York state lawmakers, seeking to curb texting while driving, want to force drivers to hand over their phones to police officers after a car crash.

The goal of the bill is to give police a device that plugs into a phone and scans logs to see if a driver was texting or calling during the crash. And if drivers refuse to hand over their phones, they would lose their driver’s license, under the proposed bill — just as suspected drunk drivers are required to submit to breathalyzers.

The bill is called “Evan’s Law” after Evan Lieberman, who died at 19 years old from injuries he suffered during a head-on car crash with another teenager in 2011. State police didn’t charge the other driver, Michael A. Fiddle, with a crime. But Evan’s father, Ben Lieberman, sued Fiddle and discovered that Fiddle had been using his phone at some point during the drive that morning.

While “Evan’s Law” was approved 16-to-2 by the New York Senate’s transportation committee last month, it has yet to be voted on by the entire legislature.

Could the police soon be able to track the next time you text from behind the wheel? Ditch the worries, put your smartphone down and simply don’t text and drive.  #ItCanWait

Texting While Driving Is Wack, It’s Deadly And IT CAN WAIT! @ATT #Tag5ToSave5 #ItCanWait

September 18th, 2015 by Christen

Before you get ready to check out for the weekend, stop and think – What if the next few seconds you spend on social media could save a life?

The It Can Wait program has celebrated September 19th as an annual Day of Action urging drivers across the country to take the pledgeThis Saturday, and in honor of the Fifth Year Anniversary of the It Can Wait program, it’s our responsibility to help spread the word and encourage readers to keep eyes on the road, not on your phones!

What if the next few seconds you spend on social media could save a life?  New research from AT&T shows how we can influence our closest contacts. And tagging these people on social may be the perfect way to get their attention. While many of us have hundreds of smartphone contacts, 2-in-3 people have almost all or most of their smartphone communications with just 5 people. The research also showed that people and their “top 5” have a lot of influence over each other.

More than 9-in-10 respondents believe it’s dangerous for drivers to send and receive smartphone communications from behind the wheel.

The research shows they’re missing a real opportunity to help keep their “top 5” safe:

  • More than 8-in-10 said they would likely stop or reduce their smartphone use while driving if one or more of their “top 5” contacts asked them to;
  • More than 7-in-10 said they would likely download an app to reduce their smartphone use behind the wheel if one or more of their “top 5” asked;
  • Nearly 85% of people would be likely to stop sending smartphone communications to their “top 5” when they know they’re driving … if only their “top 5” would ask!

“It Can Wait” To Battle The 100 Most Deadliest Days Of The Year

So how can you spread the word this weekend?  Tag your “top 5,” whether it’s a best friend or co-worker, in a social post encouraging them to keep their eyes on the road, not on their phone. It takes just a few seconds, but #Tag5toSave5 could literally save lives! This quick post could make a big difference in the lives of your favorite people! Share the following tweet and tag your friends online as a friendly reminder about texting while on the road now!

No post, glance, email, search or text is worth a life … It Can Wait. #Tag5ToSave5 #ItCanWait

I’m proud to be a long time supporter and blogger ambassador of the “It Can Wait” program.  Sure technology makes life easier, but using tech and gadgets from behind the wheel could be costly.  It’s your responsibility to keep your friends, family and top 5 safe!  Let’s spread the word this weekend and continue to encourage those around us to keep safe behind the wheel and remember, when it comes to texting while driving…It Can Wait!

AT&T’s “It Can Wait” Annual Day of Action Is Today

September 19th, 2014 by Christen

September 19th marks the It CanWait annual day of action.  The campaign has inspired more than 5 million pledges to never text and drive and created several initiatives to dissuade texting and driving.  I’ve been very involved with this campaign since the inception back in 2012 and have tweeted, taken the pledge against texting while driving and even hosted an event (or two) promoting safe mobile use while on the road.

Recently AT&T has introduced a social tool, “#X”, that fits naturally into texting conversations. It means “I’m checking out while I drive.  Back soon.”  Its a great way to get the message across that you take safe driving seriously and has already impacted mobile conversations across the world.

In addition to the social tool, AT&T has also empowered Android and iPhone users by giving users 3-step instructions on how to create a shortcut text to use in communication before you drive.  No more awkward “Can’t text, I’m driving” texts, using the shortcut instructions your one step closer to sending less texts and spreading the message against texting while driving.

Today, AT&T and its supporters will continue to encourage the public to take the pledge to make a lifelong commitment to never text and drive.  In support of the campaign, Demi Lovato has created  this PSA to urge her fans to text or tweet #X prior to driving in order to alert their friends that they will be behind the wheel and unable to respond to incoming texts.

Think Before You Send That Next Text… #ItCanWait

August 12th, 2013 by Christen

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve seen the impactful television commercials and social media messaging behind the “It Can Wait” texting and driving campaign.  Not only has AT&T, Verizon, Sprint & T-Mobile championed this message through television commercials, radio and social media channels – they’ve recently released a documentary online that highlights the danger of how one text being sent at the wrong time could horribly impact your life forever.

From One Second To The Next

The launch of a new 35-minute documentary, “From One Second to the Next,” highlights the aftermath of texting and driving in a very unique way. Directed by acclaimed film maker Werner Herzog, the documentary focuses on the stories of four individuals who have been involved or caused a texting and driving accident.

In the short film, Herzog expands on the stories he tells through the 30-second “Texting & Driving … It Can Wait” spots launched in May.  By giving voice to the individuals who caused the accidents and the many people whose lives have forever been changed by them, Herzog shows the devastating aftermath that can be created when a driver turns their attention to a single text.  The documentary is available on ItCanWait.com

“When you get a message while driving, it’s hard not to pick up your phone,” said Herzog. “With this film, we want to help make people more aware of the potential consequences of that action.”

Since my involvement with the “It Can Wait” earlier this summer – not only have I taken the pledge to cease texting while driving, but I’ve also personally encouraged family members, friends and colleagues to do the same.  Missing a text isn’t worth an expensive traffic ticket or deadly accident.  Trust me – IT CAN WAIT!

Texting & Driving Isn’t Just A Teen Problem…Take The Pledge & Spread The Word #ItCanWait

July 12th, 2013 by Christen

Texting & Driving isn’t just a teen problem… more and more adults do it everyday!  The lid hiding the misconception of texting and driving has been uncovered, and the fact is there are more adults who text and drive than teens.  So what does that mean to you?  That means that there are more seasoned, commuters on the road who believe that they’re capable of  texting while operating a motor vehicle and putting more and more people in danger now than ever before.

Earlier this year, AT&T released the results of its latest commuter survey which showed 49% of commuters admitted to texting and driving versus 43% of teens. These findings finally dispelled the myth that texting and driving is predominantly a teen problem, when in fact, commuters are more guilty of it.

While there are impactful psa commercials on tv & celebrities like Gabby Douglass and Demi Lovato bringing light to the #ItCanWait campaign, many people still do not realize the dangers that texting while driving can cause.  That’s where you can help!  You now know that texting and driving is wrong, so why not spread the word?

Here are TWO QUICK and easy ways you can spread the word, take a stand and show support.

Step One:  Take the #ItCanWait pledge.  “I just took the pledge @ itcanwait.com now NO TEXT IS WORTH THE RISK. #itcanwait”

Put Your Skills To The Test With The Texting While Driving Simulator Online

If you’ve ever thought that texting while driving was dangerous for everyone except you – or that you have exceptional multitasking skills which include texting & eating lunch while driving, then I’ve got news for you.  It appears that more adults are becoming culprits of dangerous texting and driving activities than teens.  That’s according to the results of a survey conducted by AT&T and published in USA Today, showing that 49% of adult drivers admit to texting behind the wheel. Compare that with 43% of the teen respondents admitting that they text while driving.

Many adults may believe that their experience will never fail when it comes to texting while driving, however they’ve changed their tune after experiencing the Texting While Driving Simulator online.  The online simulator puts you in “real life” scenarios causing you to choose between answering a text or making a wrong driving decision (which could ultimately cause you to crash — or worse, lose your augmented reality life!)

texting while driving

I recently tried out the simulator and as a driver who once thought that she’s the queen of auto multitasking, I can whole-heartedly attest that the simulator game reveals a first hand account of how seriously dangerous texting while driving truly is.  During the simulator, my online driving experience was paired with my smartphone which enabled me to receive text messages while maneuvering the driving simulation online.  My first idea was to keep a minimum driving speed which would help my reaction and reply time once I began to receive text messages – but clearly that didn’t work.  (Note:  If you’re not driving within 10miles of the speed limit, your simulation session will end).

texting while driving

However, the moment I began speeding using the simulator and tried to respond to a text, I was prompted to make a left turn & before I knew it – I collided with a city transit bus.  This simulation is a great example on how it only takes a moment to get into a serious accident if you’re texting while driving.  After a few additional attempts, I am convinced that trying out this simulator with a co-worker, a friend, a teen or an adult will truly impact their beliefs on texting while driving – and hopefully save lives this summer in the process.

If you believe that “No text message is worth dying for” take the “It Can Wait” Pledge and join the AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile & Sprint as a champion for this campaign for change.  If you have yet to try out the simulator, check it out here at http://www.itcanwaitsimulator.org.

Now joined by Sprint, Verizon, and T-Mobile, the It Can Wait campaign is getting stronger. It doesn’t just have the support of these carriers, there are 200 other companies that are spreading the word.

Texting while driving is a deadly habit that makes you 23 times more likely to be involved in a crash,” said AT&T Chairman & CEO Randall Stephenson. “Awareness of the dangers of texting and driving has increased, but people are still doing it. With this expanded effort, we hope to change behavior. Together, we can help save lives.

The summer-long initiative kicks off on May 26th and will be supported by a new national advertising campaign featuring people who are living with the consequences of texting while driving, a large-scale nationwide texting-while-driving simulator tour, major retail presence in tens of thousands of stores, and more. The campaign, aimed at educating drivers to change behaviors that will ultimately help save lives, will run throughout the summer months between Memorial Day and Labor Day, deemed by AAA as the “100 Deadliest Days” for teen drivers.

Texting while driving is an epidemic, and it’s not isolated to teen drivers. It affects adults as well. A recent AT&T survey shows business commuters know texting while driving is unsafe, but they still engage in these behaviors. In fact:

They are texting and driving more than they used to.

  • Six in 10 commuters said they never texted while driving three years ago.

Nearly half of commuters admit to texting while driving, which is more than teens.

  • 49 percent of commuters self-report texting while driving, compared to 43 percent2 of teens.

Despite knowing the risks.

  • 98 percent said sending a text or email while driving isn’t safe.

For many, it has become a habit.

  • More than 40 percent of those who admitted to texting while driving called it a habit.

It Can Wait Campaign Grows – National Day of Action

The highlight of the summer campaign will be a national day of action on Sept. 19. On that day, It Can Wait advocates will reach out in their communities to raise awareness of the risks of texting while driving, encourage everyone to make a personal commitment not to text and drive and recruit others to join the growing ranks of advocates dedicated to saving lives by ending texting while driving.
