Women’s History Month: Celebrating Black Women in Television

March 15th, 2013 by Tiffany

Before recent portrayals of powerful, talented Black women on television, entertainment was known to breed stereotypes. There were very few roles in the first few decades of television’s existence that didn’t marginalize Black women until the late 1960′s. Thus, African American women playing a leading non-stereotypical role was so rare they could be counted on one hand, until the late 1980′s and early 1990′s. These women have made their mark in television and have opened the doors for some of the best shows with a leading Black actress on television today. In honor of National Women’s History Month, we celebrate these women from then and now.

Then…

Diahann Carroll

diahann carroll 3

In 1968, Diahann Carroll starred in the ground breaking series “Julia.” Heralded as being the first series to star a black woman in a non-stereotypical role, “Julia” produced 86 episodes and Carroll earned herself a golden globe. The first major breakthrough for African American women in television.

-

Pam Grier

In the 70′s, Pam Grier played a character that also went against the typical African American female archetype. In 1974, Grier starred as the title character in Foxy Brown, a sexy yet independent Black woman who was capable of running down criminals and saving the day. Another ground breaking role for Black women in television.

Phylicia Rashad

phyliciarashad

The 1980′s and ’90′s saw the birth of the black upper-middle class in entertainment. In The Cosby Show, Phylicia Rashad played Claire Huxtable, the epitome of a strong, dignified, and highly intelligent black woman that rarely was seen on television before and was noticeably absent. Even after The Cosby Show it was several years before we saw another Black woman playing a lead role outside of the media-bred stereotypes, but Rashad definitely broke the mold for a new generation to come.

-

And Now…

Jada Pinkett-Smith

Jada-Pinkett-Smith-Profile

Jada Pinkett-Smith has been one of the most popular Black actresses since the early ’90′s. She has appeared in more than 20 films in a variety of genres and in 2009 created her leading television role in the TNT medical drama Hawthorne, of which she was executive producer. Although it was canceled after three seasons, it was definitely the first show of its kind with a leading Black actress, opening doors for many more to come.

-

-

Taraji P. Henson

Taraji+P+Henson+Shoulder+Length+Hairstyles+FcpQQwAcC77l

Taraji Henson has proved her versatility in a variety of movies like Baby Boy, I Can Do Bad All By Myself, The Family That Preys, Four Brothers and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Many may not know, however, that she has also appeared on many television shows before landing a major leading role in 2011 on the CBS crime-suspense series Person of Interest. Henson was a cast member on Lifetime Television’s The Division and ABC‘s Boston Legal and guest-starred on several television shows, such as the WB Television Network‘s Smart Guy, the Fox series House, and CBS‘s CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. She has proved that hard work and persistence do pay off!

Kerry Washington

kerry-washington

Kerry Washington has played almost every role imaginable from a struggling single mother in Save the Last Dance, a lesbian in Spike Lee‘s She Hates Me, a wife in Ray, a slave in Django, and finally to our favorite professional political fixer in Scandal. ABC’s Scandal was the first time in more than 30 years that a television show starring a black actress appeared on a major television network. Kerry Washington as Olivia Pope, portrays a powerful woman who runs a crisis management firm that the political elite trust to solve their problems, including murders and extramarital affairs. Based on the real life fixer, Judy Smith, Washington brings an edge to television that has never before existed.

-

Shonda Rhimes

Shonda-Rhimes

We cannot celebrate the amazing Black women on-screen without recognizing the powerful Black women that work off-screen creating more opportunities for other women of color. Producer, screenwriter, and director Shonda Rhimes has taken over television, giving us some of the best shows networks have seen in decades including Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice, and Scandal. Rhimes is a Golden Globe winner and was also named Time Magazine’s “100 people who help shape the world”. She continues to shape the television world as we know it.

These women have broken through barriers, set new standards and proven that African American women, too, can be successful in the entertainment industry and any other field chosen. These breakthroughs have also allowed others like Tyler Perry to make his mark in television, by featuring Black women as his leading characters. These women have without a doubt changed the face of television, opened several doors, and changed many perceptions in the process!

Where do you think television would be without these women from then and now? Who else are some of your favorite Black women of television?

Women’s History Month: Celebrating Black Women in Technology

March 8th, 2013 by Tiffany

Women have excelled in science and technology for the past 20 decades. Some are responsible for breakthrough inventions or discoveries that have revolutionized the world of technology as we know it. Thus, this year’s theme for National Women’s History Month, Women Inspiring Innovation Through Imagination: Celebrating Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics is the reason for our first segment in a series recognizing the amazing African American women from way back then and today.  It’s unfortunate that many of these women have been forgotten or overlooked as their inputs in technology continue to advance our society.

black women in technology

Then…

Miriam Benjamin

black women in technology BenjaminMiriam

A Washington D.C. school teacher and the second black woman to receive a patent in 1888, long before technology was as vital as it is now, Benjamin received a patent for an invention she called a Gong and Signal Chair for Hotels. Her invention allowed hotel customers to summon a waiter from the comfort of their chair. A button on the chair would buzz the waiters’ station and a light on the chair would let the wait staff know who needed service. Sound familiar? Maybe something now used on airplanes?

 -

Patricia Bath

black women in technology patricia bath

Ever wonder wheere the eye laser surgery revolution started? Doctor Patricia Bath, an ophthalmologist from New York became the first African American female doctor to patent a medical invention. Patricia Bath’s patent (#4,744,360) was for a method for removing cataract lenses that transformed eye surgery forever by using a laser device making the procedure more accurate. An invention we will continue to use and revolutionize for centuries to come!

Sarah Goode

black women in technology sarah goode

Ever bought a storage or folding bed, or certainly you know someone that has? You might’ve thought this was a fairly new idea, but contrary to popular belief, this was the first patent given to an African American woman. Sarah Goode was the first to receive a U.S. patent on July 14, 1885 for a cabinet bed. She was the owner of a Chicago furniture store and birthed an idea that continued to grow decades after the issuance of her patent.

And now…

 -

Ory Okolloh

black women in technology ory okolloh

Kenyan blogger and indefatigable open-government activist, Ory Okolloh is a co-founder of Ushahidi, a pioneering, free open-source platform for crowd sourcing crisis information. She is now Google’s policy manager for Africa and serves as a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader. Prior to co-founding Ushahidi, Okolloh, 34, founded Mzalendo, a website that helps Kenya’s electorate keep track of the activities of their representatives in parliament. She is known as one of Africa’s Most Successful Women by Forbes.

Ursula Burns

black women in technology ursala burns

Burns was named head of Xerox, the $15 billion computer and office equipment company, in 2007 after beginning as an intern in 1980. She earned her title and was a natural choice for the position after leading key business units and helping her predecessor Ann Mulcahy remake the company. Burns, who earned a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Polytechnic Institute of New York and a master’s in engineering from Columbia, was appointed by President Obama to vice chair of  his Export Council 30 years after beginning her career.

black women in technology sandraJohnson

Sandra K. Johnson

A member of the IBM Academy of Technology, the top 1 percent of IBM’s 250,000 technical employees, she has more than 40 patents and is a specialist in software and hardware research performance optimization. The Southern University-trained electrical engineer also has a master’s from Stanford University and a Ph.D. from Rice University, both in electrical engineering.

Window Snyder

black women in technology window snyder

Snyder picked up cryptography at a very young age, leading her to cybersecurity. Prior to working for Apple Inc., she headed security for the Mozilla Corp., which created the Firefox browser, and spent three years at Microsoft working on Windows XP and servers. She also maintains contacts with good and bad hackers. We personally owe her a lot of thanks from our continued use with the products she has worked on!

While the number of women in technology and other areas of science are growing, the number is still smaller than one might think. It is obvious, however, that the doors for African American women in the areas of science and technology are expanding beyond just simple patents. These inspiring, motivated, and intelligent women definitely deserve all the praise and recognition that this month holds for them as they continue to build and better multi-million and multi-billion dollar companies!

Merry Christmas: Mama’s Christmas Miracle

December 25th, 2012 by Christen

Mama’s Christmas Miracle

© Kathy J Parenteau
Mama told me a story a long long time ago not like any that I’d ever heard,
all about a little girl mama used to know, how I remember every word.
Seems like a lifetime ago, though I remember it so well,
it was a Christmas eve I’ll never forget as far as I can tell.
We were sitting at the kitchen table, it was only my mother and me,
I was dreaming of Christmas morning and all the presents under the tree.
Dad wasn’t doing that well and money was scarce that year,
Mama found a way of telling me without me shedding one tear.
She told me a story of a little girl and a Christmas long ago,
who came from far away, a place where it rarely snowed.
Santa was just a dream to her, but she believed so much inside,
that Christmas was going to be special, so she knelt by her bed and she cried.
“Lord let Santa remember me if not just this one time, I promise I won’t ask for much, maybe a dolly I can call all mine.”
She closed her prayer and thanked the Lord for all that she received,
she knew that Santa would really come if only she believed.
She wrote a letter to Santa unfamiliar to most girls and boys,
Though her list was long and full, on it there were no toys.
Only things we take for granted, like new shoes or underpants,
hair bows for her sisters and gloves to warm her brother’s hands.
At the bottom of her list she asked if it not be to much, for a brand new baby doll she could hold and love and touch.
Then Christmas morning came and she looked beneath her tree,
Not a present to be found as far as she could see.
She didn’t give up hope as she heard a knocking sound,
When she opened up her door a great big box she found.
She called out to her mother and dad, brothers and sisters too,
She said “my prayers were answered, there’s something in here for all of you.”
Her daddy got brand new boots, her mother new underpants, her sisters got beautiful hair bows, her brothers warm gloves for their hands.
Buried deep beneath the box was a brand new baby doll and a note that said Merry Christmas I love you one and all.
I’ll never forget that story because much to my surprise,
I saw the true meaning of Christmas shining in my mother’s eyes.
For those of you who are wondering, as if you didn’t know,
The little girl in Mama’s story was my mother long ago. This poem is about a childhood memory I will never forget.

God bless all the mothers in this world and may all your Christmases be ones to remember.

Last Minute Holiday Street-Style Snapshot: NYC

December 24th, 2012 by Fashion Staff

Not to be outdone in the midst of the holiday rush, New York City’s chicest individuals paraded the streets this Christmas Eve in search of last-minute gifts and everyday errands, alike.  Check out the haute holiday rush of last minute shopping in NYC below…

The Oversized Sweater (Lucy, NY)

Lucy

Big sweaters with bright colors and crazy patterns aren’t just for satirical parties anymore.  Follow Lucy’s example, shown here on the Lower East Side, and pair a busy sweater with an understated, neutral bottom and accessories in the same color to make a bold, but sartorial, statement this holiday season.

Contrast to Complement (Mizuki & Babu, Brooklyn)

MizukiandBabu

Mizuki and Babu, a couple from Japan now living in Brooklyn, are a fashion statement of their own.  By contrasting Babu’s patterns with Mizuki’s minimalist color scheme but bold textures and linking them with the simplest of accessories— a baseball cap— these two form their own bohemian rhapsody.  Achieve a similar effect with your significant other by dressing in clashing palettes and choosing one common accessory to make the overall look cohesive.

The Statement Scarf (Kenda, Gainesville, Florida & Claudia, Italy)

KendaandClaudia

The recent deep-freeze may force you to prioritize warmth over glamour, but a statement scarf, as worn here by Kerry (left) and Claudia (right) can add a punch of color to an otherwise-neutral ensemble and allow your personality to warm up the cold weather.  Our favorites feature unexpected prints and rich colors.

Feminine Without Freezing (Kerry, Malibu)

Kerry

Follow Kerry’s lead and layer soft, textured pieces over cold-weather staples like jeans in order to achieve a smart take on classic, feminine pieces.  Vary up the color palette, mix up lengths and textures, and accessories intelligently to achieve a measured, yet eclectic aesthetic shown here.

If All Else Fails, Stay True (Leah & Stefan, Australia)

LeahandStefan

Leah and Stefan made the most of classic style to stand out this winter.  If you aren’t one for style experimentation, but still want to have fun, stick to tailored pieces in classic cuts and styles but in unexpected colors (i.e. Leah’s bright yellow tights)  to simultaneously pay homage to fashion tradition and take the world by surprise.

Five Major Red Flags To Avoid When Searching For Love Online

December 21st, 2012 by Lifestyle Staff

“What do the lonely do… at Christmas…”  Well,  a lot of them jump in the sea of love online.  Online dating is now a popular way for individuals to meet, connect, and develop personal and romantic relationships via the internet. There are tons of online dating services to expedite these ventures and now with a plethora of social networking sites finding love online may just find you with one click.
onlinelove
In 2012 the popular documentary, Catfish, unfolded by following the story of a young man developing a romantic relationship with a young woman via Facebook. After the year-long adventure the young man discovers that everything the young woman portrayed was false. After the release of the documentary the young man was contacted by other people with similar experiences who wanted to know the truth and get connected -in person- with their online matches.

Catfish_665x443_605x403

Now a television show on MTV, Catfish reveals an entire community of people who find themselves romantically involved with another person online without having met face to face, and are skeptical of the truth. Yet once the truth is revealed it is often times altered, false and devastating. Obviously there is nothing wrong with searching for love online, but there are some precautions you must take to avoid these “catfish experiences”.

LooksPoll

Here are five things to look out for when searching for love online:

False Image

With an increase of social network sites, easy is an understatement when it comes to false image use on profiles. One thing we learned from the TV show Catfish was to drag the profile image into a search engine and see where that image is located elsewhere. The image may be under ‘Teresa’s Facebook profile’ but also listed as ‘Kimberly’s LinkedIN profile’.

False IdentityPublic-Record1

Age, sex, and alias are the most important things to know FIRST. It may be awkward to ask, “hey why don’t you send me a sexy picture of your valid driver’s license?” especially since it seems NO ONE takes a good photo these days, but that is why we have the old school white pages and even online services like Peoplefinder.com. If you are really feeling weird you can even check someone’s criminal background on the public conviction database.

False Employement

“What model agency did you say you worked for again?” With today’s technology finding out someone’s employment is as simple as giving the office a call. Even if you have to pretend you are interested in hiring that person, its a great tactic in knowing what’s real and even finding out the reputation of the person’s business.

False Residence

“So you were born in North Carolina, grew up in Atlanta, lived in New Mexico, California, Madrid and Syracuse by age 22?” Sometimes things may not add up and with a little more research flaws in the person’s stories about their past can be revealed. The saying, “it’s a small world” is no joke and mutual friends on social networks are great connections to knowing the truth -even if you don’t have mutual friends, after a simple add now you do.

FacebookScreen-610x250

False Reasons to Not Video Chat

Eventually trust is established and reasons to avoid video chats shouldn’t be accepted. With video applications like Google chat, Skype, iChat, Oovoo, and Tango just to name a few, there are really no reasons not to eventually video chat. Especially with establishments like Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts, plus your neighbor’s open Wi-Fi, or a friend’s apartment; Wi-Fi for video chat is easily accessible with phones, tablets and computers. No excuses.

Have you experienced a ‘catfish’ experience while looking for love online? Share, comment, or get to researching if you’re currently questioning your online love!
