In an effort to further strengthen the mission of introducing young women of color to code and stem education, Black Girls Code has announced a partnership with General Motors, which includes a hefty $255,000 donation to launch a chapter in Detroit.
GM says it’s teaming up with Black Girls Code partly because of the work its doing around electric and self-driving cars, and how much technical genius is going to be required of younger generations.
“It’s one of the reasons that it’s our mission to help build the next generation of STEM leaders, with an emphasis on expanding opportunities to women and other underrepresented groups,” GM CEO Mary Barra said in a statement.
To celebrate GM and Black Girls Code hosted a series of hands-on and engaging activities at Detroit International Academy for Women(DIA), a Detroit Public Schools Community District school, and TechTown.
According to the Detroit Regional Chamber, Detroit outpaces the nation in information technology job growth and is expected to continue the pace through 2025. This partnership, announced alongside four other computer science partnerships in June, aims to increase interest in STEM career fields for girls of color. Women of color are traditionally underrepresented in STEM fields, especially in technology. Only 3 percent of African-American women and less than 1 percent of Latinas receive degrees in computer science.
Black Girls Code CEO Kimberly Bryant shares “Although we’ve hosted workshops in the area off and on since 2012, we are thrilled to officially launch a Black Girls CODE chapter in Detroit with the support of GM and other corporate and community partners like Comcast and Wayne State University. Our regular programming, launching this fall, will lay a foundation to fully engage girls of color in Detroit and is designed to inspire them to continue their paths as future STEM professionals.”

Chevy is speaking to younger first-car buyers like never before. “Next Gen Customers are not just car owners, they are also tomorrow’s designers, engineers and innovators,” said Mark Reuss, president, General Motors North America. “This generation expects brands to partner with them, and we need to engage with them at every level of our business.”” Unlike other brands, Chevy is specifically about the business of “partnering” with consumers versus “targeting” them.
Several of Chevy’s high impact vehicles popular with younger buyers include the Sonic RS, Spark and the highly popular concept vehicles the Tru 140S and the Code 130R.
One of the driving forces behind younger consumers is of course “24/7 Connectivity” and Productivity – which is one of the reasons why Chevrolet MyLink was created. MyLink which is featured in the Spark and Sonic, helps them stay connected at a fraction of the price of previous systems.
The Chevrolet Youth Concepts, designed with and for Millennials, serve as an example of how Chevy is engaging the group in the co-creation process. To date, more than 13,000 people have provided feedback on the concepts at global auto shows, through Facebook, and at the annual South by Southwest music, film and interactive conference and festival.

On January 9th the night before the 2012 Detroit Auto Show Press Preview began, GM held a revealing party for the much anticipated Cadillac ATS. This event was beyond, pleasingly graceful and stylish (just like the car). Filled with trendy food, elegant music, and modern décor – it easily made for a spectacular platform to introduce the Cadillac ATS.
This vehicle is light and powerful, and on the inside it gets even better. On display was the CUE system a touch screen with voice recognition; this system was top notch and user friendly. The highlights of the ATS were on display through out the event and made for a great teaser. The final unveiling of the ATS was straight to the point that the ATS is a powerful compact luxury vehicle that will compete with the best. When asked to describe the Cadillac ATS in one word Don Butler, vice president of marketing Cadillac said, “Quick, but really you need three words.” Maybe the three words were quick nimble, and fun! On Sunday, November 13th the DivasandDorks.com team was invited to join GM and Buick for their annual Buick Discovery Tour in Stamford, CT. Partnering with Food & Wine Magazine – the theme of the tour included the discovery of culinary delights by reknown chefs, discovering the art of wine-tasting as well as the discovery of the new 2012 additions to the Buick family – The Regal, Verano, Enclave and Lacrosse.
Upon arrival we were greeted by friendly staff & ushered to our first cooking demonstration by Food & Wine cover chef – Gavin Kaysen. Chef Kaysen took us through a quick recipe of his famous Maine Peekytoe Crab with Orange & Pepper Gelee* – which was delicious! Afterwards, our resident chef Tiffany Kelley had a few questions about the ingredients used & how we could get Chef Kaysen to cater our next event for free…lol.
Following our appetizing crab dish, we were introduced to dessert early with Chef Ben Roche of Moto Restaurant in Chicago. (Let’s just say he’s responsible for making anything edible – including the restaurant menu.) Chef Roche won my heart over from the beginning of his demonstrations with the introduction of Bacon-flavored ice cream* & a S’Mores (chocolate) bomb*.
Once our bellies were full, then came the fun part – test driving the new 2012 Buick models. As a cross-over lover, I had my eye on the Buick Enclave, that is until I learned about the hologram in-dash feature available in the sleek and sexy Lacrosse (so you know I had to get behind the wheel and try it out for myself…)
The ride was incredibly smooth (once I got over the odometer / radio / speedometer hologram on the windshield…) the seats were incredibly comfortable and high heel approved (just saying – you know we divas like to drive in our heels…lol). With features like heated and air-conditioned seating, push-button start, Buick IntelliLink, navigation and USB portability with iPod connectivity – this ride is perfect for the stylish girl on the go that needs to stay connected in her fabulous life.

Wrapping up the afternoon, we learned over years of wine tasting & evaluation within 30 minutes. Have you heard about the Six S’s of wine tasting? (See, Swirl, Smell, Sip, Swish, Spit (or savor) was the methods used to evaluate and enjoy the wine taught by wine aficionado Michael Green. The final cooking demonstration of the most delicious meatballs* by Chef Michael Psilakis was phenomenal. Chef Psilakis shared intimate childhood memories on how food affected his life and ultimately his career – he even gave us an autographed copy of his latest book ‘How To Roast A Lamb’ and encouraged us to use food to “plant a seed” and create life-long memories. *Recipes available upon request.
After a day of an amazing discovery food, wine & beautiful cars – Buick along with Food & Wine magazine left us with an amazing experience and looking forward to what’s next from GM and the Buick brand. What does Buick, Black Enterprise Magazine and Divas & Dorks have in common? A phenomenal three days of inspiration, empowerment and much, much more! The Black Enterprise Entrepreneurs Conference + Expo 2011 in Atlanta, GA was a phenomenal event that went beyond my expectations!
It all began with an evening of getting acquainted with fellow bloggers, media and Buick/GMC staff during the Buick Welcome Dinner…and somehow ended with Nina, Rachel and I getting the party started participating in a line dance….”The Hustle” to be exact at the Black Enterprise Welcome Reception!)

After an evening of getting acquainted, it was immediately time to get down to business! The opening keynote speaking, Dr. Dennis Kimbrough kicked off the conference with a remarkable and thought-provoking keynote address reminding attendees that “...Our problem isn’t that we don’t have money, it’s what we do with the money that we have!” Other gems of wisdom that Dr. Kimbrough shared regarding entrepreneurship included:
- “Whatever you do, do it so well that no one can take their eyes off of you!”
- Four Key Factors in every Millionaire’s Mindset (Dream BIG, Be Different, Dedicate to Continued Education, Refuse to Fail!)
There were so many more inspiring thoughts and stories shared throughout the conference and sessions that I couldn’t possibly list them all, but I will be sharing how I’ve implemented them in my daily journey through entrepreneurship soon.
The excitement immediately jumped into social overdrive with the very first BEEC Session of the day: “Go Digital or Die Trying!” featuring Torrence Boone, James Andrews, Wayne Sutton, Marshawn Evans & moderated by Patricial Cesaire, Director of PR for Black Enterprise Magazine.

Vivian excitedly shared news of GM’s programs which include scholarships for first generation college students, K-12 education programs and more! GM is not only a vehicle manufacturer, it’s a corporation that takes education, entrepreneurship and diversity seriously – and proves it by re-investing in the community.
