Microsoft will offer free upgrades to Windows 10 — the next version of its operating system — first for Windows 8.1 users and then for Windows 7 users, the company announced this week.
In the first year the software is available, the company will upgrade any devices running Windows 8 to Windows 10 for free, according to Terry Myerson, Microsoft’s executive vice president of operating systems. The free upgrade will also apply to Windows 7 devices and Windows Phone 8.1 devices.
The free upgrade is only available for the first year. Microsoft has yet to announce the software’s price for the upgrade after that one-year window.
“We think of Windows as a service,” Myerson said during Microsoft’s Windows 10 unveiling event in Redmond, Wash. “Now developers can target every single Windows device.”
The move is likely designed to convince consumers that Windows is worth the effort. Windows 10 is an attempt to wipe the slate clean after missteps with Windows 8, including a new start menu that attracted complaints from PC users, who sorely missed the traditional menu.
More than half of all desktops in the world still run Windows 7. Almost 20 percent still run Windows XP, a 14-year-old operating system. Windows 8.1 has yet to reach 10 percent.
Hardware companies have increasingly been giving away software upgrades to keep their users tied to their ecosystems. Apple, for example, has made both its Mac OS and iOS free, as well as many of its productivity and photo management tools.

For example, you can score $10 per month for unlimited 3G data plus 500 MB of 4G LTE data, then $10 more every time you want to get 2 GB more of 4G LTE data (tablet pricing only.) A second major freebie T-Mobile is offering customers the iPad Air for free when it hits on November 1 without a penny out of your pocket (the day of purchase). Instead, you’ll have to pay in monthly installments (which could work for different financial circumstances) at a T-Mobile starting November 1.
Let’s see, grab an iPad Air from T-Mobile and walk out without any money leaving your wallet AND ON TOP OF THAT the free 200 MB of 4G LTE for life applies for the iPad Air, too? I know plenty of people that may snatch this deal up before it becomes extinct.
Starbucks won’t be the only go-to hot-spot for quick Wi-Fi action for long. Fashionistas can rejoice, haute fashion house Saks Fifth Avenue has announced that Wi-Fi service from AT&T is coming to all 44 locations across the United States. This is actually the culmination of a gradual roll-out that began last November at the original store in New York City. Now, you’ll be able to connect at any location – Saks suggests that you use it to view their FashionFix app, which introduces you to even more fashions and features an event calendar for all the store locations.

Oscar de la Renta is launching its first fragrance in 10 years — and it’s doing so via Facebook.
Over the next few weeks — or, until its supply of 5,000 runs out — the American fashion house will be giving away free samples of its new scent, Espirit d’Oscar, via a special section of its Facebook Page. The full eau de parfum will be available at beauty counters in approximately two weeks.
Michele de Bourbon, Oscar de la Renta’s head of marketing for fragrance, says that the brand’s Facebook fan base is becoming increasingly valuable to the company. And while many of those fans might not be able to purchase one of the label’s $4,000 signature cocktail dresses, many will be able to “experience the world of Oscar” through its more affordable fragrance line, she says.
This is the second time we’ve seen a major fragrance launch marketed on Facebook. Marc Jacobs launched a Facebook game titled “Bang, You’re It!” to build buzz around the launch of its first scent for men last year.
Oscar de la Renta has more than 120,000 fans on Facebook, and maintains an active presence on Twitter and Tumblr. The launch campaign was conceived by Oscar’s in-house marketing team and engineered by Buddy Media.

Apparently you can also find them at store locations in Ohio and New Jersey.
