Making a great film requires a skillset of great storytelling, magic and an eye for style. Finding the right look that conveys an emotion, sense or feeling not only helps tell the film’s story but costuming can make or break the success of a film, period. In film as in real life, playing the part is only half the challenge, the other half consists of dressing the part and becoming the living embodiment of the character – a job that seasoned costume designers like Ruth E. Carter knows all too well.
During the 2016 American Black Film Festival – Harlem’s Fashion Row hosted a panel discussion with acclaimed costume designer, Ruth E. Carter (Roots, Selma, Lee Daniel’s The Butler, Sparkle, Malcolm X) to discuss the collaborative process of planning wardrobe for a film, and its powerful impact on the story.
Presented by Prudential, this unique perspective spotlighted just how influential style and design is in film and storytelling. Moderated by Brandice Henderson-Daniel, Founder Harlem’s Fashion Row – guests witnessed the stories behind the design from Ruth E. Carter as well as inspirations behind her illustrious career in film.

If there’s any hi-lo collection worth saving coins for, it’s undoubtedly the Balmain H&M collaboration arriving this Fall!
Who’s ready for a swoon-worthy fashion collection unlike anything we’ve seen before? News first broke of the collaboration back in May when Kendall Jenner and Jordan Dunn both rocked pieces from the upcoming collection on the red carpet at the Billboard Music Awards. (Since we’re kinda over the Kardashian hype, we failed to acknowledge the hype…. until today!) We haven’t heard much about the line (set to launch November 5), since then but it looks like today is our lucky day. This morning, Elle released a new photo from the collection and it was worth the wait.
We’re huge fans of the hi/lo designer partnership trends… I mean hello? Our closets are still filled with pieces from Versace/H&M, Jason Wu/Target collections and more. Unlike some designer collaborations we’ve seen in the past, none of the brand’s super glamorous aesthetic seems to be lost this diffusion line. The long-sleeved, embellished dress looks just like what you might find on the runway at a Balmain fashion show. We’re betting the pieces from this Balmain H&M collection aren’t going to quite as budget-friendly as the rest of H&M’s merchandise, but if everything looks as good as this we’re definitely up for a splurge.
H&M does a great job with their collaboration collections and by the looks of things, we’re in for a great collection reveal soon!
What are you hoping to find in the Balmain H&M collection? Share with us in the comments below.
“Hey! Are those iPhone charging jeans you’re wearing?” Sure it doesn’t roll off the tongue quite like those Bugle Boy jeans commercials from back in the day, but these new smart jeans may just be the newest addition that you’ll want to add to your closet asap.
A new denim line from Joe’s Jeans, called the #Hello jean, tries to solve both the problem of charging your iPhone and stylish jeans that’ll fit your iPhone at once. The jeans, which don’t come cheap for $189, have a special opening above the traditional back pocket for a battery pack, which charges your iPhone 5, 5S or 6 in another special pocket alongside the charger opening.
The charging pocket works with the help of a USB cord hidden along the seams and connects to a small portable battery pack, which is an additional $49. Meanwhile, the iPhone fits into the back pocket and can fuel up on battery power (hopefully, without someone noticing — or snatching it away). Just remember to remove both components before throwing the jeans in the wash.
Although the premise is a nice idea, don’t think you’ll get to leave your chunky portable chargers at home ladies. The charger with the new #Hello jean will barely charge the iPhone 5 and 5S up to 85%, and charges the iPhone 6 up to 70%.
What do you think? Is rocking a new pair of phone charging smart jeans for $189 in your immediate future? Share in the comments section below!
During my recent 10-day stay in New Orleans for the 21st Annual Essence Festival – I got the chance to explore the city, culture, celebrities, home-grown entertainment and so much more! From new restaurants to hidden gem boutiques, New Orleans offered so much more than I’ve ever expected it to, even after visiting NOLA for the last five years, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the street style, gourmet delicacies and amazing architecture found around every corner.
If I had to narrow my summer style obsession down to one piece, it would definitely have to be the jumpsuit. It’s super-easy to wear, stylish and can practically be worn everywhere. Since I’m a tall girl, it’s sometimes challenging to find stylish jumpsuits that look good, feel good and fit good too! After searching all over, you can’t imagine where I’ve found my favorite jumpsuits, including this blue cutout number below…
After searching online and in stores, I finally found this beautifully fitting jumper from H&M. Offering just the right amount of style and sass, this jumpsuit is lined with small waist length cutouts and a sleek back zipper that can be office appropriate with a cardigan or street-chic appropriate worn as shown.

In preparation for a Caribbean getaway with Strength of Nature, I found myself in search of a versatile dress that could take me from day to night. Surprisingly, I discovered the dress of my dreams inside the windows of a store that I rarely (if ever) shopped in before… Discover where I found my new favorite vacation dress below…
Clearly, I am still too ticked that I found this fabulous Bedrock maxi dress from Loft. The spaghetti straps and bold prints drew me in, but the flowing silhouette and super sexy split made me a believer!
Available in stores and Loft and Loft.com – don’t be fooled, this Bedrock dress may appear to be black and white, but it’s actually a deep navy blue hue. (Don’t worry, it can easily pass for black and white while worn with practically anything!)
The Bedrock maxi dress accompanies bold prints with a sexy/strappy silhouette. The elastic waist will cinch you in, while the elongated 42″ (from waist to ankle) dress flows and moves with your every step. I loved wearing this dress during a catamaran ride in Montego Bay – it’s the perfect dress for any vacation!
When you’re on vacation, you need a versatile dress that makes you feel confident, feel sexy and make you want to let loose dance! This Bedrock Maxi dress from Loft is definitely it!
If you hurry, you can catch a sale at Loft.com on the dress plus a great assortment of transitional seasonal pieces today.

If you wondered if Apple’s newest venture in fashionable technology would be accepted by the fashion industry, your answer is here!
There are actually two mega stars on the cover of Vogue China’s November issue. There’s supermodel Liu Wen, one of the world’s highest-paid models and Victoria’s Secret star, and then on her left wrist, the Apple Watch.
Check out the cover shoot below, after all, it might be the frontrunner for the most wearable of the high-end techcessories we’ve seen so far.
On the November Vogue China cover, the gold Apple Watch is styled with minimal accessories, and with its colorful interface, it definitely stands out and holds its own. Wen appears to be wearing the 18-karat yellow gold Edition Apple Watch, which features a red Modern Buckle Band. She’s also featured wearing other Apple Watch models on a spread inside the magazine.
The smaller 38-millimeter timepiece+ is outfitted with a thin red band to coordinate with the bold Ikat-style stripes on Wen’s Céline shirt dress, which earns it points for personalization — remember, this wearable broke from the one-style-suits-all camp with its collection of customizable, interchangeable bands. But what really wows us is its overall ability to fit right in with a cover-worthy ensemble.
According to Vogue, it’s definitely a step above many wearables on the market today, but could you see yourself wearing the stylish smart watch daily? Share your thoughts on the Apple Watch and the cover below.
