Five Fall Fashion Trends You Can Wear NOW (…And Some To Avoid Later.)

August 13th, 2013 by Christen

It’s unavoidable.  Back-to-school sales & commercials ring the alarm that Fall is fast approaching, no matter if you’re just getting settled into summer.  Slowly but surely, summer styles are being pushed onto clearance racks and Fall’s trendiest looks are front and center everywhere.  Department stores, magazines and more – you can’t escape it, Fall is practically here!  This morning, as I perused through morning emails – I came across a gorgeous Baroque skirt and instantly thought “…but is Barouque still in style this season?”   I clearly needed a refresher on Fall trends to prepare me for what’s to come & thought I’d share some of my favorite Fall trends can wear now (and a few you can try to avoid later this season) below.

WEAR NOW

1. BEANIES – The beanie is one of those runway trends that won’t ever go away (so you might as well embrace it, right?) —it’s practical and affordable, not to mention super cute. One tip: Wear it on your way to the office or a cocktail party instead of just on the weekends. The contrast is part of what makes it look so chic.

2.  LAYERS & LAYERS OF LAYERING – Take a cue from BCBG and add interest to your fall outfit choices by piling on a few extra pieces.  Mix textures with your pants, skirts, and tops. A sheer dress over leather pants allows you to layer without looking bulky.

3.  LEOPARD PRINTS:  Play with different colors of leopard this season. Classic brown and black will always be in style, so have a little bit of fun and choose a pink or red version instead.

4.  WINTER WHITES – On the runway this season, head-to-toe winter white made one of the strongest impressions. Easy to assemble at any price and season-spanning, this addition for wearable trends NOW was a no-brainer.

5.  BE SEEN IN GREEN:   Green is officially a thing for fall 2013. From emerald to army, there’s a shade for every skin tone, hair color, and personal style.

AVOID LATER

1.  CIRCUS & FOLK PRINTS – Fall collections had a thing for earthy fabrics, wild patterns, and thus the folk-inspired looks came forth. While these hand-worked motifs aren’t terribly horrific, use extreme caution when attempting these looks on your own (or you could wind up looking like a displaced circus performer).

Prabal Gurung, Rodarte, Suno, fall 2013 fall fashion trends

2.  ROUND SHOULDERS – (shoulder pads required.) Busty girls:  Stay away.  Boy-shaped girls:  Stay away.  Any girl that doesn’t require the use of shoulder pads while playing stadium football…. STAY AWAY.

NYFW: Vera Wang Fall 2013 Ready To Wear Collection Exudes Sensual Sophistication

February 12th, 2013 by Christen

Fresh from the debut of her Ready-To-Wear Fall collection, Vera Wang has once again inspired beauty, sensuality and sophistication in her designs.  Very seldom can you witness a design collection that takes your breath away, but once you do experience it, it’s sure to be a moment that you’ll never forget.  The Vera Wang Fall 2013 Ready To Wear Collection, may not be ready to wear everyday however the beauty of being a woman is the versatility that you have to transform your look in any way, every day.

Let’s go back to London 2012 (not London Fashion Week per se’ – moreso London shop style).  Last August, while shopping in a local London boutique I discovered a beautiful metallic, monochromatic brocade dress and instantly fell in love with it.  Little did I know, the Vera Wang collection would be such a sophisticate interpretation of the growing and ever-present brocade trend.

I found love in this brocade dress... and so did Vera Wang...

I found love in this brocade dress…                                                                                                  (and so did Vera Wang by infusing the distinct pattern in her latest line )

Not to say that Vera Wang’s collection was inspired by my London Instagram flicks (that would be cool to think though…LOL) however, the textures and beautiful colors throughout the collection are elegant as they are sensually stunning.

Bountiful Brocade Parade:  Beautiful patterns and intricate brocade details illuminate the runway in deep metallic hues and accents of deep purples, green and orange.  The Vera Wang Fall Read To Wear Collection speaks sensual sophistication infused with an artful opulence without saying a single word.

Embellished prints and voluminous hip lines heightened by the moody jewel tones and plenty (plenty) of black was seen cascading down the runway.  Only Vera Wang could bring such art and sincere style to a collection without sacrificing her commitment to strong, poignant trends.  I am in LOVE with the classic look and feel that only richly decorative brocade fabrics can provide in design and lucky for me, there’s enough love in this Vera Wang Collection to go around.

Work The Trend: A Guide To Working Oxblood Into Your Daily Wardrobe

November 15th, 2012 by Fashion Staff

Undoubtedly one of the hottest trends for the fall is the color Oxblood. I personally hate the name…why can’t I just call it burgundy or plum like it’s been since the beginning of time!?!?! HA! Aside for the disdain for the name, there is no questioning its presence in this falls lineup of “must haves.”  Celebs and fashionistas have flocked to the trend rocking it in a variety of ways. This variety adds to the allure of the trend and it’s capacity to be worn with most anything and worn in almost any way.

This amazing leather skirt, priced at $925 definitely makes a fall statement in traditional McQueen fashion!

Avant Garde fashion house Alexander McQueen took this trend and fused it together with classic fall favorite, leather! This amazing leather skirt, priced at $925 definitely makes a fall statement in traditional McQueen fashion! Wear it with cable knit tights and ankle booties to complete the look!

Unlike some trends, oxblood is not limited to a particular item like military jackets or coated denim. There really is no wrong way to wear it as I’ve seen it rocked “all oxblood everything” or as an accent piece for an outfit. Need some style inspirations? Check out these outfits that cater to any budget.

Autumn Trend Alert: Look At Me Now Leather

September 17th, 2012 by Fashion Staff

There’s no better way to celebrate a change in seasons than to mix a little color with colder temp wardrobe staples.  One of the best ways to mix up your look is by adding colorful leather to your wardrobe.  Rock Star Rita Ora knows exactly how to tease the paparazzi with her amazing looks and eclectic wardrobe. Her bright blue jacket and red leather bag make her look trendy without trying too hard. Opting for less traditional colors in leather is an instant way to be among the fashion elite. Learn the DO’s and DON’T’s on how to snag this look.

DO

Go for the Gold– or red! Brown and Black leather clothing and accessories are the norm. If you really want to turn heads, choose a bright color that will stand out. This is not the time to play coy.

DON’T

Wear this trend with too many other colors or over the top prints.  Rita perfectly paired her hot ticket leather with more subdued clothing. The result is a more balanced ensemble.

DO

Treat your leather before you first wear them. Protect your items early against water, salt, and snow. This will give you more bang for your buck and keep your items looking good year after year.

Check out a few of these colorful options to mix and match within your wardrobe starting today.  You’ll love the versatility that this pop of color  will add to the bland colors of autumn.  Which piece could you see in your closet?

Shady Autumn: Finding The Perfect Fall Retro Shades For You

September 4th, 2012 by Fashion Staff

Known for her killer style, King Bey makes rocking a vintage pair of frames look like child’s play. Regardless of the season retro inspired sun or prescription eyeglasses are the perfect way to add a bit of spunk to any ensemble.  Before choosing your next pair of vintage frames, check out these few helpful hints.

DO

Know the shape of your face; do you have a round, square, oval, or heart shaped face? Choose frames that complement your facial and bone structure.

 ——————————————————————————————————————————-

DON’T

Buy frames online until you are comfortable with what works best for you. Also if this will be your first pair of retro frames, start with a more settle pair before trying wild colors and lenses.

DO

Look to old movies and photos for vintage frame inspirations. You can also explore your local thrift shops for one of a kind pieces.

The Row Tortoise Round Sunglasses, The Row Cat eye acetate sunglasses $445, Madewell Textbook glasses $49.50, House of Harlow Lynn animal-print acetate aviator sunglasses $74, Tom Ford Transparent Ali Round Sunglasses, Green $199

——————————————————————————————————————————-

Not sure which sunglasses work best for your facial shape?  Check out a few of these tips below:

Square:  Frames to try – Oval and round frames, Glasses with temples that are center set or that connect at the top of the frame.  Frames to avoid – Geometric and square shaped frames that accentuate angles of the face.

Oval:  Frames to try – Most frame shapes work with oval faces.  Frames to avoid – Frames that are too large for your features.

Round:  Frames to try – Angular and geometric frames that sharpen facial features.  Rectangular and horizontal styles make faces appear longer and thinner.  Upswept frames that draw attention to top of face. Frames to avoid – Small frames that are out of proportion.  Short frames that accentuate face length.

Heart:  Frames to try – Bottom-heavy frames that add width to lower face.  Styles with low-set temples to draw attention downward.  Narrow, round frames that soften the forehead.  Frames to avoid – Top-heavy styles that draw attention upward.  Decorative temples that accentuate the broad upper face.

Are you looking forward to sporting your summer shades well into Fall?  Which of these Autumn shades fit your personality best?

Fly On A Dime – Affordable Fashion Ideas & Tips

September 3rd, 2012 by Christen

In addition to hosting a “Ready, Set, Engage!” Social Media Basics seminar over the holiday weekend at the 10th Annual AllState Tom Joyner Family Reunion, I also had the opportunity of co-hosting the “Fly On A Dime” Affordable Fashion panel with celebrity stylist Olori Swank & celebrity beauty artist Tia Hebron.

During this panel, several shopping ideas, tips & stories were shared including ways to extend your wardrobe, key pieces that every closet should have & the best time to shop/build your fashion collection.

Did You Know:  One of the best times to build your fashion collection is in November?  It’s true, the pre-holiday season boasts almost 6% deeper discounts than any other time of the year.  (It’s even better than January which only offers average discounts about 4.5% higher.)

The top three “fashion investments” that every woman should invest in includes:

  • Leather jacket
  • Oversized watch
  • Quality Bras & foundation undergarments
Staple items that every woman should have in her wardrobe includes:
  • Great pair of black stiletto heels
  • Convertible wrap dress
  • Statement scarf that you can wear all year long
  • Stylish trench coat
  • Well-tailored black blazer & slacks
  • Waist cinching belt

Did You Know:  The worst days of the week to shop online is Saturday & Sunday!  According to Consumer Reports, Tuesday is the best day of the week to shop online.  Most consumers find discounts exceeding 5% more than the average discounts found other days online.

Tips:

  • Before you shop, make sure you know your body type and what works best for your shape.
  • Essence.com has a great tool online – The Fashion Closet that’ll help you out matching designers that specialize in specific body types.
  • A great foundation will ensure that you look great all over – so make sure to invest in foundation garments.
  • Overall, don’t be afraid to express yourself in fashion but do it wisely.
  • Invest minimally in seasonal trends, instead opt for investing in quality staple pieces that you can wear for years to come.
