In Case You Missed It: BET Rip The Runway In Review

March 21st, 2013 by Nigel Last night the fashion & entertainment event Rip The Runway aired nationwide on BET. Hosted by Kelly Rowland and Boris Kodjoe the show featured some jaw dropping designs from Rihanna for River Island,  MSFTS, Mochino, Shanda Style, Boris's own line Alfa and more. Accompanying these haute looks were performances from todays hottest artist, Sevyn Streeter, Luke James, Trinidad James and a host of other artists.
Our favorite collection from the show was Rihanna for River Island, which was made up of black maxi garment with high slits, black and white stripes, a vibrant pop of yellow and that notorious double denim piece that had everybody in fashion talking. MSFTS, Lie Sang Bong, and the size sexy segment were also standouts as well.

Our favorite trend throughout Rip The Runway was the high heel gladiator shoe. This trend that was seen on the runways in New York, London, Milan, and Paris came in the forms of Versace and Cesare Pacitto during the show. The well heeled models definitely were a strong point during the show.

Are You Ready To Pay For YouTube Content?

February 15th, 2013 by Tech Staff     Pay For YouTube ContentAre consumers really ready to pay for YouTube content?  YouTube is transitioning from a platform to a full fledge producer. Are they trying to reinvent TV? Looks like it. Could YouTube become the next internet giant?  It seems they are experimenting with the idea. Back in October, YouTube announced an investment of millions in original content production of over 60 individually selected channels on its video platform, and they will charge subscription fees to viewers – like cable television. Reports show that the initial paid channels will cost $1 - $5 a month for episodic content and will debut in the Spring. Why would YouTube enter this market? With the percentage of people using tablets and smart phones as the primary means of viewing multimedia content and Hulu now offering their own original content programming why wouldn’t they. Google, YouTube’s parent company has said it wanted to explore non-advertising revenue to generate profit. They will also consider charging for content libraries, access to live events, pay-per-view, and self-help/financial advice shows. As for YouTube partners (vloggers) the subscription fees affects them too. YouTube is advising its current partners to consider carefully how their existing audience will react. Most have spent years building up a base of free subscribers through hard work and cross-promotion. Can they produce content worth paying for? Nevertheless, YouTube has to get people to view their content like they watch TV. That is more difficult. How do you get people to watch a 30-60 minute programming daily/weekly, rather than a 5 minute video clips and clicks? Pay For YouTube Content “But how does YouTube go from upload center to the engine that powers the video-curated web? For that, Dror looked to today’s TV formats for a clue. And what he found may surprise you. If you think about TV shows like ESPN Sportscenter, that’s essentially what these formats are. Clip shows. They have some hosts, talk for a few minutes and then they go to some content that they didn’t create but are pulling from other sources. Now we’re making that format available on YouTube. Anyone can use the giant library of video content and start to create these hosted Programs.” (   Pay For YouTube Content     Would you pay for YouTube content?

#2013CES: Celebrity Endorsed Consumer Electronics…Are We Over The Hype Yet?

January 10th, 2013 by Christen

readwrite ces celebrities

While enduring the massive LVCC floorplan – filled with thousands of products demos, hundreds of gifting samples and too many celebrity appearances/autograph signings to name – I’m reminded of a conversation had with a fellow technology blogger regarding celebrity tie-ins and it’s impact on the bottom line of consumer convincing sales.  Don't get me wrong, months ago when it was announced that Kanye West would be the surprise celebrity performer during the Samsung Galaxy Note II press event in New York – I was ecstatic!  (Mind you, I’ve been a true Kanye West fan since 2002 and this was before the whole KimYe relationship-baby-publicity stunt thing came to light…but I digress.)  As much of a fan as I was of the celebity, I just don’t believe that their affiliation with a product could sway my decision to spend hundreds of dollars on a particular device.  Sure, the celebrity involvement may grab the attention of consumers, but it’s the actual product quality and user experience that will translate those consumers to sales generating customers. ces monstre One may beg to differ, by using celebrity endorsed weight-loss campaigns or fashion campaigns as examples of celebrity endorsements done right.  In regards to those two very different segments, you could be right, without any argument from me – however, both of those industries (and quite honestly the endorsements too) are based on the psychological desires of consumers to be accepted, look a certain way or feel a certain attachment to a celebrity through a product.  Because consumer electronics do not omit warm & fuzzy feelings of acceptance, desire or attachment – I believe that it’s difficult to create a highly influential consumer base by attaching a celebrity to your product for ooohs and ahhhhhs. But that’s just my opinion….what’s yours?

‘What Were They Thinking?’ Celebrity Moments of 2012

December 19th, 2012 by Tiffany
2012 has been a year filled with outlandish relationships, fashion statements, trends, and thoughtless statements by celebrities that seemed thoughtless, leaving many of us with our mouths wide open. Celebrities from political figures, to singers, comedians, actors, gymnasts, and even to child stars have made their mark on 2012. We have compiled a list of the top 12 celebrity moments that have left you thinking 'what the... -were they thinking?!' Rewind with us, laugh and revisit some of the best celebrity moments as we say goodbye to 2012.

Evelyn Lozada and Chad "Ocho Cinco" Johnson definitely shocked the world in August of 2012. Johnson, 34, was arrested on a misdemeanor domestic violence charge after he allegedly head-butted Lozada during an argument. Lozada was treated for a "pretty good-sized" laceration to her forehead. While the situation was physically damaging to Lozada, it was detrimental to Johnson's football career.  We bet he'll never head-butt another soul.

Of all the 2012 celebrity pregnancies, Snookie was by far the most surprising of them all. The high-paid reality star had a baby boy on August 26, but was once the life of the party on Jersey Shore.  The March 2012 confirmation of Polizzi's pregnancy gave cause to speculate as to how the creative direction of her spinoff would be affected, as she would be unable to engage in the "hard-partying, booze-swilling" antics that had previously garnered high ratings for MTV. Many of us were shocked to find out this reformed party-goer would be putting down the liquor bottles for the baby bottles.

Men and women were both surprised when Frank Ocean dropped the bombshell about his sexuality. Right before releasing his album Channel Orange he admitted to the world that he was bisexual. He stirred up so much of a buzz that even Beyonce wrote him a letter with handwritten words over a picture of Ocean saying, “Be fearless. Be honest. Be generous. Be brave. Be poetic. Be open. Be free. Be yourself. Be in love. Be happy. Be inspiration.” Shock to some, inspiration to many others. His Twitter response: "Don't get it twisted, I'll still take your girlfriend."

Comedian Katt Williams had a double whammy that left everyone wondering what is wrong with him?! After a high speed police chase in California, Katt went into a Target store and was caught on camera slapping an employee! He then did a tearful news interview after another altercation at a Seattle restaurant saying he was "done with stand-up comedy".

If you missed it watch an out of it Katt Williams give his statement after the incidents.

After the birth certificate conspiracy, Donald Trump’s Twitter rants and his again total disrespect for the president after President Barack Obama’s victorious win lands him on our 2012 'What Were They Thinking' list.  Once the state of Ohio was called for President Obama and sealed the win for his re-election, Trump took to Twitter saying: "Barack Obama’s win was a disgusting injustice.” He even tried to rally his fans against an election that he called a 'travesty'. Who other than the multi-billionaire himself could blatantly disrespect the president like this? Definitely left us wondering where is mind really was, and what reality he lives in.
Obama had the best comedic response to Trump on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, watch here.

While some were onto Rihanna and Chris Brown early on, others were shocked by her Tweets and Instagram pictures confirming that they were officially back together. She convinced us on Oprah's Life Chapter that she had forgiven him but moved on... we should have known better. While some were excited, many were left thinking  'what is she thinking?!' I suppose next year will tell whether it will be the 'dynamic duo' or 'destructive dummies'. To be continued...

Real Housewives of Atlanta newest cast member Porsha Stewart may not be known for her own name or accomplishments, but she is definitely known for her dumb statements. Her '265 days a year' statement left everyone wondering if she had any brains in that pretty head of hers. Although her point- 'it's not just about feeding the hungry only on Thanksgiving, it's an everyday situation' -was genuine, so was her stupidity with her next remark. "I mean, this is 265 days a year!" Porsha could definitely make a better name away for herself by talking less.

The Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj cat fight definitely tops this year's WTF moments. The unlikely duo's brawl seemed to come out of no where and spiraled out of control with Nicki claiming she would shoot her! Due to her discomfort and Nicki's 'unpredictable' behavior Mariah then had her security increased following the incident. While producers called speculation surrounding the spat 'inaccurate', a spokesman for the show said: "This is one of the best, most passionate, dynamic and invested judging panels we've ever had." Coincidence or not? We think not, but it still makes for a shocking moment we wont forget.

This before and after picture shows the weight-gain transformation Lady Gaga purposely underwent, launching what she called a "body revolution". Known for her rainbow wigs, outlandish fashion, and self-empowerment-themed music Lady Gaga has always sought to make a point. The above picture went viral after hitting the internet, while she used it as an opportunity to reveal her own struggles in hopes of empowering her "little monsters".
In case you missed it this news clip from abcNews explains her message and reasons behind it.

Alana "Honey Boo Boo" Thompson has definitely made a name for herself this year. Landing her own reality show on TLC, she has also recently appeared on Barbara Walters's Most Fascinating People of 2012 list. While she has had many memorable moments  on both Toddlers and Tiaras and  spin-off Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, her guest appearance- or lack of appearance- on the Dr. Drew show lands her on our 2012 memorable moments list as she defiantly expresses her boredom on camera.

If you missed it watch her doze off on Dr. Drew here.

Brad Pitt had everyone in a state of confusion as he rambled through the latest Chanel No. 5 perfume commercial. Sounding as if he had no script, he talked about the world turning, his luck, his fate and left everyone wondering what the commercial was about. Not even 24 hours later Saturday Night Live and several other YouTube clips surfaced mocking the commercial and Pitt's confusing role.
Check out the controversial commercial for yourself.

Nicki Minaj confused, shocked and even scared a few during her February performance at the 2012 Grammy's in Los Angeles. She performed Roman Holiday sitting next to The Pope  and called the performance “The exorcism of [Nicki's alter ego] Roman." Choreographed by Laurieann Gibson,  it featured religious imagery, pyrotechnics, and backup dancers dressed as monks. The performance may -or may not- have been a mock of the Illuminati conspiracies, but it definitely rubbed many the wrong way.

And that's a wrap! Hopefully celebrities will give their statements a little more thought before putting them out into the world in 2013. Since that might be inevitable, we're already excited to compile next year's 'What Were They Thinking' moments. Until then...

We Will Always Love You: A Grammy Salute to Whitney Houston

November 19th, 2012 by Christen If you were tuned into to television on Friday night, you would've noticed R&B superstars Jennifer Hudson and Usher were among the singers and celebrities who paid tribute to Whitney Houston during the CBS special ‘We Will Always Love You: A Grammy Salute to Whitney Houston,’ which aired Friday (Nov. 16).     Actors LL Cool J, Taraji P. Henson and Halle Berry also paid tribute to Nippy during the telecast. “She inspired a generation of little girls and women to believe in their own dreams and to know that they had within themselves the greatest gift of all,” a choked-up Berry said. “I was one of those little girls who then became a woman who never ever, ever stopped loving Whitney Houston.”   The late pop icon, who passed away on Feb. 9 of an accidental drowning, had a major influence on everyone involved in the show. Although Whitney is no longer with us, her musical legacy continues to gloriously live on. The standout fashion performance of the evening was undoubtedly Celine Dion.  A dress clearly designed with the use of virgin fairy dust & freshly spun gold, days later this dress still leaves a magical impression.  Celine lends her talents and amazingly magical styling to the evening, performing a rendition of ‘The Greatest Love of All"... see her magically delicious dress and performance below...

BET Hip Hop Awards 2012: Fellas, Fashion & A Few Tech Fetishes

October 2nd, 2012 by Tiffany

Before the confirmed fights, chain snatchings and melees was the BET Hip Hop Awards Red Carpet interviews.  Since the BET Hip Hop Awards took place in none other than the heart of Southern hip hop music, Atlanta, GA. it's only right that the talent as well as the fashion here is definitely in a league of its own. We hit the red carpet to find out what fashions, trends, and gadgets a few of Hip Hop's rising stars &  celebs just can't live without!

Diggy says when it comes to fashion he's an accessories kind of dude. "I like neck wear and bracelets a lot, but definitely love kicks a lot too." One gadget he can't leave the house without "My iPhone! I'll turn around for that." I just knew Diggy had the iPhone 5, but looks like his schedule hasn't allowed for it yet. "I've been traveling everywhere so much since it came out that I haven't been able to make it to the AT&T store, but I'm going to get it though."

We spoke to Mr. "Snapback and Tattoos" himself, Driicky Graham. To my surprise snapbacks are not his fashion must-haves on a daily basis. "Fox tails and I love Louie V. belts, I got one on right now actually."  He doesn't have the iPhone 5 yet either, but says he's still "rocking with Siri on the 4S, so I'm good for now, but I'm definitely going to check out the 5." He will be one of the many rappers part of the this year's Cyphers.

Super producer Mr. Bangladesh (left) definitely gets my vote for most interesting style and outlook on technology. The Grammy winning producer has worked with names like Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Lil' Wayne, and his latest project with Brandy. When asked about his fearless style he says-- "This is just me, I came out of the womb with {style like} this." I asked if he was as advanced in technology as he was in fashion and had the iPhone 5? He definitely gave the most interesting answer unlike any other celeb-- "No, I'm not into the hustle. One thing about Bang, you're not going to hustle Bang. Technology is the hustle world. There's nothing different in the iPhone 5 that they couldn't have put in the iPhone 4 or the 1. Apple has these smart technicians- you can't tell me that they didn't think about making the picture clearer before the next one was created. You know what I'm saying? It's a hustle. I have the old iPhone not because I wanted it but because I was in the U.K. and they told me I needed it. I'm not for the hustles."

His newest artist Fast Life (above right) says he prefers to get his clothes from all over the world. " I got some Balenciaga, Fendi, and vintage Valentino type . But my favorite piece I'd have to say is my gold... I can't leave the house without my gold." He has a mixtape coming soon and is striving to be the next big name under Bangladesh Records.

Looks like the iPhone 5 is still on many celeb's to-do list, while others refuse to be "hustled" by it. So WHO was the first to boast having the iPhone 5 on the red carpet?

Q Parker from the Atlanta based singing group 112 was the first one on the red carpet that could boast of having the newest iPhone.

"I don't really have a style, I just like to be expressive. I'm not afraid of textures or colors."  That was clear considering he was the only male on the red carpet wearing sequins. "However I feel that's what I do." So what does Q look for a lady to have as a part of her style package? --"I don't really get into that. I just really like for a lady to be confident in whatever she puts on and know that she's sexy. If she knows it, I know it. Confidence is the whole package." Ladies take notes!

When I told Q he was the first one I've come across with the iPhone 5 he said--"You know a lot of people don't have it because they're letting the glitches get out of it. A lot of people have been having problems with the new operating system. Luckily I haven't had any problems and I love the new iPhone."

Here are a few more red carpet surprises, show downs, show outs:

Rapper 2 Chainz showed up on the red carpet looking like a bag of skittles, but also like a dad. He brought along his daughter and expecting partner as well. Who would have known he was a family man?

We're still left to wonder who showed up as the Ninja Turtle squad...

Cash Out and his Chucky doll accessory was the loudest fashion statement on the red carpet by far. This is definitely a red carpet first.

Fans can look forward to another year of Hip Hop greats & hot acts rocking the Atlanta stage next week.  Rapper LL Cool J spoke in a tribute to hip-hop manager Chris Lighty, who committed suicide last month behind his Bronx townhouse. Q-Tip, Fat Joe, Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliott and 50 Cent took the stage to perform, as did Rick Ross, P. Diddy, 2 Chainz and Future.

DirecTV Subscribers Sing “Hallelujah! The Ratchet Is Back!”

July 20th, 2012 by Christen

If it's been 10 days since you've witness your favorite ratchet programming on VH1, BET or more - then your wait is finally over.  Viacom and DirecTV announced this morning that they have reached a deal, putting aside their dispute and allowing programming to return to the airwaves.

The agreement ends a dispute that has interrupted programming since July 10. Viacom had blacked out channels for 20 million customers of DirecTV (DTVFortune 500). Among the channels affected were Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, MTV, Spike and VH1. "It's unfortunate that Viacom took the channels away from customers to try to gain leverage, but in the end, it's clear our customers recognized that tactic for what it was," said Dereck Chang, executive vice president of DirecTV.   And by customers, that includes displaced reality TV / New Jersey Nets Blake Griffin...   Viacom was seeking what DirecTV claimed was a 30% boost, or an extra $1 billion, on top of its prior deal. Viacom countered that the hike it sought was just "a couple of pennies per day per subscriber." The companies did not provide a dollar figure for the new deal.   via
