Five Stages Of Your Digital Detox To Become Refreshed, Connected & Balanced

February 3rd, 2016 by Christen

From the beginning of smartphones and apps we’ve learned the digital doctrine of ABC’s (Always Be Connected.)  Now with the help of social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram – we’re obsessed with starring at our phones 50, 100 and even up to 300 times a day.  Many people choose to dedicate the beginning of the year to fresh new year’s resolutions for fitness, finances and even digital health and wellness.  I personally decided to refresh by going on a much needed digital detox.

There are plenty of benefits & a few setbacks that a digital detox can bring in your life – discover the five stages of a digital detox and how starting healthier digital habits can leave your refreshed and connectedly balanced for the new year below.

Preparation:

Preparing for a break from digital devices and social media takes determination and having a complete goal in mind.  Whether it’s spending time working on interpersonal relationships or just taking a break from feeding the social media beast preparing for your digital detox takes time.

Benefits – Whether going on a digital diet and minimizing your time on your smartphone, tablet or other electronics or slowing up your social media intake on Facebook or Instagram, taking the right approach on how far to take your digital detox will only work out if you determine what you want to get out of your detox in the long run.

Anxiety:

You’re bound to get anxious once you determine to take the leap into a detox like this but remember though this confrontation can be difficult at first, the pay off is significant. Many detoxers find a real world connectedness that enriches and enhances our lives in a way no Wi-Fi connection can.

Benefits – Some of the changes you should anticipate after a digital detox are more balanced and calmer calmer feeling in your life due to periodically stopping the continual digital exposure throughout your day. You’ll feel more rested, more aware, more present, more productive and less overwhelmed and stressed out. You’ll also feel more connected to your work, love relationships, family, friends and yourself.

Relief:

After taking the leap and going through with your digital detox, to your relief you’ll find that it’s actually easier than you thought it would be.  After all, you’ve lived a life before gadgets and social media so surely you’ll be able to conquer what life is like without it.

Benefits:  You can be so preoccupied with your digital devices that it’s all too easy to inadvertently sacrifice time, relationships, sleep, focus, productivity and balance in your life. Many people are not even aware of the toll their extensive usage of digital devices costs them until they have suffered a loss or upset because of this.  The relief you’ll experience during the digital detoxification process is just the beginning to a life of balance and how happy you’re truly feel once you complete your challenge.

Transparency:

Once you reach a level of contentment with your digital detox, you’ll find yourself breathing a sigh of relief and coming to terms with just how dependent you were on “likes”, “shares”, “comments” and “checkins”. The digital age has changed the levels of transparency that we expect from ourselves and others.  Keep it real with yourself about your addiction and what you’d like to gain from your detox and instantly feel the weight of the world wide web off your shoulders and the freedom to live your life the way you want to live.

Benefits:  There’s a saying “The first step in solving a problem is to recognize that it does exist.” (-Zig Ziglar) The moment you become transparent with yourself, you’re able to recognize what areas in life that you’d like to improve.  When you have a digital detox you feel more rested and less stressed. Who wouldn’t want to feel less stressed?

Maverick:

Reaching the final stage of your digital detoxification is where you begin to feel all the benefits in a euphoric way.  You’ll begin to feel more rested, more aware, more present, more productive and less overwhelmed and stressed out. You’ll also feel more connected to work, love relationships, family, friends and to yourself. This time of self awareness will empower you to rebel against the norm of social media use and will make you feel like a maverick and true trendsetter of creating a balanced life.

Benefits:  Creating a life lived on your terms will empower you to own your happiness and create long-term, meaningful connections with coworkers, friends, family and more.  The biggest benefit of them all, you’ll live a happier and healthier life!

After completing my digital detox for the month of January, I feel more relaxed and have a new perspective on how I use social media.  After all, isn’t social media supposed to be used to facilitate connections?  If FOMO (fear of missing out) is a little too strong in your life, maybe a digital detox is just what you need to jumpstart your new year.

Have you tried a digital detox yet? What was the biggest benefit for you?

Got Digital Clutter? 3 Ways To Spring Clean Your Digital Life

March 20th, 2015 by Tech Staff

Smartphone, tablet, laptop, desktop, GPS device – are you drowning in digital clutter? If so, you’re not alone. Americans spend more than 43 hours per week on a variety of devices, and nearly half (47 percent) have one or more devices they no longer use at all, a survey by Intel discovered. Spring is a great time to add “cutting digital clutter” to your list of seasonal tasks.

Decluttering your digital life doesn’t mean you have to give up your technology, throw devices away or spend a bundle on replacements. Here are three easy ways to spring clean your digital life this year:

1. Choose more flexible devices.

Technology keeps getting more impressive every year and keeping pace is essential in both the personal and professional realms. Beyond only going for this year’s hottest new tech, look for devices that do more. Tablets, 2 in 1 devices and portable all-in-ones pack versatility and power into a single compact device. Here are three great options of new devices that are powered by Intel:

Dell Venue 8 7000 Series – The thinnest tablet in the world, this innovative tablet features Intel RealSense Snapshot technology, which allows you to measure, gauge depth, refocus images and bring photos to life with the touch of a finger. An Intel Atom processor gives the tablet lightning-fast performance, and an edge-to-edge infinity display creates an immersive experience for users.

Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro – Lightweight, ultra-portable and fanless, this 2 in 1 device features the newest Intel Core M processor to better serve your entertainment and productivity needs. A 360-degree hinge allows for different modes, including laptop, tablet, stand and tent, and it has a long-lasting battery to ensure busy users can stay productive while on the go.

Dell Inspiron 23 – If you’re looking to upgrade your old desktop PC, this all-in-one features a 23-inch screen ideal for watching movies or family game night and at less than half an inch thin is one of the thinnest options in its category. One available model houses the new Intel RealSense 3D Camera, enabling capabilities like gesture control, 3D scanning and 3D printing that bring new ways for the family to have fun together.

2. Donate old devices.

You can spring clean your digital devices and give back at the same time when you donate older devices. From smartphones to desktop PCs, numerous organizations facilitate getting older, no-longer used devices from donors and putting them in the hands of people who need technology but can’t afford to buy the latest tech items.

Check with your local electronics retailer, school district, church or other community organizations to see if they accept device donations.

3. Recycle old devices.

Every 1 million laptops Americans recycle saves enough energy to power more than 3,500 homes per year, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Recycling cellphones and other devices also allows for the recovery of a number of valuable metals, including copper, silver and gold. Recycling devices keeps them out of landfills.

The EPA offers a searchable database of device recycling programs on its website. Retailers, device manufacturers and even mobile service providers offer recycling programs. Many cellphone companies offer trade-in programs that allow you to hand in your old device and get a discount on a new one.

Before you donate or recycle, be sure to remove personal information from the device in addition to the battery, which may need to be recycled separately. If you don’t relish the idea of letting go of the device altogether, consider recycling it within your own home. Your old smartphone may no longer meet your needs but it could be a great starter phone for your pre-teen, and that laptop you find too heavy to lug from meeting to meeting may work just fine as a dorm-room device for your college-age child.

5 Easy Ways To Go Green, Celebrate Earth Day And Impact The World

April 22nd, 2014 by Christen

Today is Earth Day!  Yeah, sure – we should be celebrating Earth Day EVERYDAY, but let’s be realistic.  Sometimes, it’s hard to keep the Earth in mind when you’re dealing with everyday life.  From recycling to eliminating wasteful energy consumption, there are more than enough ways to “go green” but how do you incorporate a greener lifestyle that’s easy to incorporate in your everyday life?  That’s why I’ve compiled 5 easy ways to go green, celebrate Earth Day (Everyday) and impact the world below.

5 Easy Ways To Go Green

5. PAY BILLS ONLINE
One of the easiest ways to go green is to use online bill payment systems instead of the old “mail in” means of payment.  By some estimates, if all households in the U.S. paid their bills online and received electronic statements instead of paper, we’d save 18.5 million trees every year, 2.2 billion tons of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, and 1.7 billion pounds of solid waste.

4. STOP PAPER BANK STATEMENTS
Some banks will pay you a dollar or donate money on your behalf when you cancel the monthly paper statements you get in the mail. If every household took advantage of online bank statements, the money saved could send more than seventeen thousand recent high school graduates to a public university for a year.

3. TURN OFF COMPUTERS AT NIGHT
I’ve just conformed to going green and saving energy with the press of my laptop button.  By turning off your computer instead of leaving it in sleep mode, you can save 40 watt-hours per day. That adds up to 4 cents a day, or $14 per year. If you don’t want to wait for your computer to start up, set it to turn on automatically a few minutes before you get to work, or boot up while you’re pouring your morning cup ‘o joe.

2. RECYCLE OLD CELL PHONES
The average cell phone lasts around 18 months, which means 130 million phones will be retired each year. If they go into landfills, the phones and their batteries introduce toxic substances into our environment. There are plenty of reputable programs where you can recycle your phone, many which benefit noble causes.  Check out how to recycle your old cell phones from Verizon, Best Buy and more HERE.

1. USE RECHARGABLE BATTERIES
Each year 15 billion batteries produced and sold and most of them are disposable alkaline batteries. Only a fraction of those are recycled. Buy a charger and a few sets of rechargeable batteries. Although it requires an upfront investment, it is one that should pay off in no time. And on Christmas morning when all the stores are closed? You’ll be fully stocked.

In Love With Tech? What’s Your Gadget Attraction?

December 4th, 2012 by Tech Staff

You may or may not not be the “techy type”, however you probably have several girlfriends who are. Had it not been for my own gadget girlfriends, I wouldn’t have the slightest interest in the latest and greatest technology. I decided to go on a search of my own, just to see what could possibly peak my interest for my or my gadget girlfriends’ Christmas lists.  Here are a few things that I found worth sharing.

How much FUN is this toaster?! While getting your morning coffee/tea ready, you no longer have to wonder if your bread is on the proper setting or browning to your likening. From almost any angle in your kitchen, you will be able to see your toast’s transformation. No more burned toast and breakfast just became even more exciting!

You really don’t have to be into gadgets much to enjoy this timepiece. Perfect for your bedside, and the perfect size for stocking stuffing!

If you still have the iPhone 4/4s, don’t fret, many of us still do!  This cell phone case is a must-have accessory that will leave you feeling like you just upgraded phones. The case resembles a small journal and provides excellent protection from elements and the occasions that your phone slides from your hand (Even if you never lose a grip on your iPhone, like myself, this case is swanky!)

Here’s the perfect mouse for those of us on the go more than we are home, known as the Arc Mouse. After realizing how much this would simplify life on the go, I had to share this with you! The entire mouse takes the shape of your leg, preventing it from sliding to the floor and makes for a no-hassle, easily-mobile work space.

You don’t have to be a “gadget guru” to enjoy these latest technologies. They are perfect for a self-upgrade, or for stocking stuffers  for the crew. Whatever your gadget attraction, there is truly something for everyone!

Tell us some of the latest gadgets that you found and/or favor below… and stay tuned for more gadget updates from the team!
