The Secret To Mastering Your Wealth In Two Easy Steps

October 3rd, 2016 by Christen

There’s a saying, “When you know better, you do better.” In that case, after attending the Rainbow Push Coalition Money Matters workshop – not once, but TWICE; I’ve learned the secret to mastering your wealth, and it was surprisingly easier than what I thought.

Rainbow Push Money Matters Workshop
During the workshop, speakers like Dominique Broadway shared her insight on her journey to becoming a leading financial speaker and advisor. She also shared tips on how to start a budget, stick to a budget and overcome specific budgeting goals.  What stood out among today’s talk on wealth management?  During today’s workshop, Dominique shared the secret to mastering your wealth in two easy steps and once you catch this gem, you’ll never look at your finances the same way again.

Rainbow Push Money Matters Workshop

Mastering your wealth comes down to two major factors.  Income and Expenses.

According to Dominique Broadway, it’s important that your income outweighs your expenses.  Sure you could focus on making more money, but if you’re constantly spending then you’re not fully maximizing your budgeting potential.  You can achieve balance in your budget by finding creative ways to decrease expenses like cutting your cable bill or packing a brown bag lunch.

Extra Tip:  Automate your savings to consistently build wealth.

  1. Set a goal amount.
  2. Break down the amount.
  3. Automate your savings.

Dominique shared a necessary strategy that could have you save $10,000 by year’s end.  Let’s say you have $2,500 that you want to grow into $10,000 and you have 10 months to do it.  If you automate your savings account to save $275 every two weeks, you could possibly save $5,500 by year’s end.  If you save an additional $2,000 from an annual bonus or tax returns, you’ll have $10,000 before you know it.

I Finally Got It! My Money Matters Moment With Rainbow Push Coalition & Chevrolet

Money Matters

Have you ever had that “A HA” moment and then questioned why didn’t it happen sooner? Everyone learns differently, some faster that others and some a whole lot slower than others too.  When it came down to financial and credit management, it took me a very long time for the light bulb to come on and have my A HA moment about handling finances properly.  Since I was a teenager, I’ve always held down multiple jobs and was pretty good about keeping money in my pocket.  I wasn’t the best at saving money, but because I always had a paycheck coming you would think that I had all my finances and business affairs in order.  Boy was I WRONG!

Recently, I got the chance to experience Rainbow Push Money Matters workshop presented by Chevrolet in NYC.  During the all day workshop financial thought leaders like Dominique Broadway and Bill Cheeks taught real world strategies and applicable tips on  how to build wealth using the income you have right now. It was at that moment I had my financial A HA moment that has changed my life forever.

Discovering a plan that’ll automatically save money for me was the first part, however doing the actual savings daily, weekly and monthly was the easy part! Using this money flow chart, I’ve simplified my finances while creating a nest egg of savings for future market and startup investments. Check out an example of how I’ve simplified my finances below.

#PushMoneyMatters – Budgeting Basics, Understanding Credit & Investment Tips Every Adult Must Know

September 14th, 2016 by Christen

Disclosure: This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Chevrolet. The opinions and experiences shared are all mine.

What do you know about budgeting, credit and proper investments? Honestly. Truly. The fact is there are hundreds of thousands of people just like you who may not have solid education on how to properly budget, manage credit or consider investments. The Rainbow PUSH Coalition with support from Chevrolet recently held a Money Matters Financial Empowerment Workshop in Harlem to help inform and inspire young adults about the possibilities of financial literacy and financial health. Because when you know better, you do better. Right? These educational sessions demystified the complexities of college financing, credit as well as the benefits of investing, budgeting basics and was just what I needed to jumpstart my new budget-making goals.

POP QUIZ!

Do you know why you need credit history?

What about the importance of good credit?

Did you know: Payday loans can be very expensive form of credit?

What’s the major difference between saving and investing?

If you attended the Money Matters Financial Empowerment Workshop in Harlem, you should score an A+ on these financial quiz questions and have a deeper understanding and actionable steps on making your money work smarter and harder for you.

During the workshop, speakers like Dominique Broadway shared her insight on her journey to becoming a leading financial speaker and advisor. She also shared tips on how to start a budget, stick to a budget and overcome budgeting goals. A financial tip that I now use? The My Money Goals card is a great way to remind yourself of your budgeting goals. You simply write your goals on the card and stick it inside your wallet for safe keeping. It’s a gentile, yet hard-enough reminder to detour you from frivolously swiping your debit card or spending cash unnecessarily. If it isn’t going towards my money goals, it’s not THAT important.

Mr. Bill Cheeks is a veteran when it comes down to understanding and teaching the importance of good credit. He has a perfect credit score! A PERFECT CREDIT SCORE! I used to think having a perfect credit score was as mythical and mystical as a unicorn. Mr. Cheeks shared valuable tips including:

  1. Pay your bills on time.
  2. Have a small amount of total debt.
  3. Only use a small amount of your total available credit.

There were also insights that completely changed the way I look at credit. During the event, I personally learned how to avoid and/or report identity theft and how to use credit responsibly. There were sessions available for any and everyone that’s serious about their financial health. If you need to make a change to improve your financial health and want to make your money work harder and smarter for you, check out the instant replay of the Money Matters workshop in NYC. You’ll gain valuable insight on your financial health and get excited about getting started on making the right financial moves for you and your future.

How much do you know about mastering your financial health? I’m talking serious financial literacy! Did you know that many Americans aren’t as educated as they’d like to be about properly financing college education, understanding credit or long-term money management? As a teen, I wasn’t taught much about money management and knew nothing about establishing good credit until I reached college. By that time, it was too late! The resources I needed may have came along later in life, but lucky for you – there’s financial experts waiting to help you today! Rainbow PUSH Coalition and Chevrolet have teamed up to host a series of workshops aimed to educate African American consumers on financial literacy and assist you in developing concrete steps toward financial security, health and financial freedom!

Unforgettable Moments From My #FindNewRoads Cross Country Camaro Drive

November 10th, 2015 by Christen

It’s always been an experience I’ve wanted to scratch off my bucket list for some time now.  Who wouldn’t want to grab their best girlfriend and go on a cross-country road trip in an amazing car?

Over the course of several weeks, Chevrolet’s hosted media influencers and journalists on a drive throughout the 48 US contagious states.  Driving behind the wheel of the 2016 Chevy Camaro, we were encouraged to #FindNewRoads and discover points of innovation throughout the country.  We visited landmarks and discovered the roads less traveled during our drive from New Orleans, LA to Dallas, TX (with plenty of exhilarating & unforgettable moments to spare!)

Check out a few of my favorite moments from our cross country Camaro drive in search to #FindNewRoads below!

Crescent City Connection

If you’re familiar with the Denzel Washington flick “Deja Vu” chances are, you’ve seen the iconic twin cantilever bridges that carry U.S. Route 90 Business over the Mississippi River in New Orleans before. Formerly known as the Greater New Orleans Bridge (GNO) – it’s the widest and most heavily traveled bridge on the lower Mississippi; instrumental with the Hurricane Katrina evacuations in 2005.

2016 Camaro

The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro and the Crescent City Connection – two iconic symbols of mobility and strength all rolled into one #FindNewRoads moment.

Mardi Gras World

What’s the next best thing to visiting New Orleans during Mardi Gras?  Taking a trip to one of the happiest places on earth – Mardi Gras World. We were looking for a real, behind-the-scenes look at New Orleans Mardi Gras and boy did we find it!

2016 Camaro

At Mardi Gras World, guides take the mask off Mardi Gras with an all-access Mardi Gras tour, winding through the massive studio where these magnificent floats are built from the ground up. Guests learn about the history of this unique and festive tradition and go beyond its reputation to get a deeper understanding of the real Mardi Gras.

One monkey don’t stop no show:  The massive Mardi Gras World experience is a MUST during your next New Orleans visit.  Make sure you bring plenty of camera storage because there are plenty of picture perfect moments you’ll want to capture during your visit.

Bayou Dinning And Aligator Bites

After a 15-mile drive outside of New Orleans, we stumbled upon the beauty and bounty of the Restaurant des Familles. Nestled along the waterway home to alligators, turtles, egrets and other wildlife (Bayou des Familles) – we were in search of authentic Cajun and Creole bites and the Alligator Stuffed Mushrooms with Alligator Sauce Piquant more than delivered.

Good Eats:  We enjoyed the best of the best from the Restaurant de Familles including the grilled Shrimp & Grits with jalapeno-cheddar grits with scratch gravy, Caesar Salad and Catfish strips.

The Alligator Stuffed Mushrooms with Alligator Sauce Piquant was amazing – and the views of alligators just a few feet away were even better.

Swamp Tour Through Gator Country

I’ve never been in an airboat before, let alone on a tour through the swamps of the bayou.  So of course finding the road less traveled lead us to the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve. Trained guides escorted us into the murky waters of Louisiana swamps where we came face to face with the beauty and beasts of nature.

Driving The 2016 Camaro

The 2016 Camaro more than handled the road, it commanded it.  Driving from New Orleans to Dallas  as a Camaro road warrior was beyond amazing.  As the most efficient and powerful Camaro SS ever it’s equipped with improved handling, performance, technology and kept heads turning throughout the entire drive.

Meet My BFF And Find New Roads In The New 2016 Chevrolet Camaro #FindNewRoads

November 3rd, 2015 by Christen

It’s amazing how driving a car can introduce, impact and ignite friendships that can last a lifetime.  Driving is one of the rare experiences that highlight shared moments in your life that you’ll never forget.  Exciting moments that lead to earning your first driving permit to unforgettable road trips with friends, no matter your age – you can always remember moments that involve your first or favorite car on the road!

This week, I’m revved up with excitement as me and my best friend get ready to take our friendship on the road driving the 2016 Camaro across the U.S., seeking people and places that embody the spirit of Find New Roads by pioneering new solutions in technology, business, education, arts and culture.

Find New Roads

My BFF Tiffany and I met years ago as key players for our high school volleyball team.  I was a high school senior and she was a wise-cracking freshman who bummed a ride home from volleyball practice.  We instantly clicked and became friends by riding home from volleyball practice together.  Who knew that months of after school driving would set the foundation for a 17-year friendship?!?

Months later after graduation, I was off to a whole new world – college.  We eventually lost contact, but was once again reunited by the same car that drove our friendship into existence.   One random afternoon, Tiffany noticed my car-bra-clad sedan (in aftermarket electric blue) parked outside my college dorm. Can you believe she yelled out my name, over and over until I ran outside?  I found my best friend and just like that, we were connected at the hip again!

We were the epitome of girls that love their cars!  We both had the same make and model and created our very own car club on campus (we were the only two members of the car club, but who cares – we thought we were haute stuff! LOL)  We always compared notes on driving/parking tricks on campus and cultivated the foundation of our friendship over cars, wise-cracking jokes and the craziest college co-ed experience ever!  Over the years we’ve watched boyfriends, degrees and even random auditions for MTV’s “The Real World” come and go and 17 years later, you ain’t seen nothing yet!

BEST FRIEND (noun): A person who you value above other friends in your life, someone you have fun with, someone you trust and someone in whom you confide.

  Find New Roads

Meet my best friend… we’re exact opposites and yet exactly the same – and this week we’re going on the road in the all new 2016 Chevrolet Camaro.

From college to a cross-country road trip, where can you find us next? Meet us in the Big Easy this Wednesday, November 4th at the NOLA Motorsports Park! Check out our road tripping hijinks, map track the tour and details at FindNewRoadsTrip.com. #FindNewRoads
