Homes Getting Smarter Than Ever Before

The home automation phenomena may not have taken off like wildfire yet, but that doesn’t mean smart home technologies are slowing down anytime soon.   Certainly there will be plenty of manufacturers boasting HomeKit and Amazon Echo compatibility, but it’ll be the practical, useful gadgets (think: sensors that detect floods or breakage, smart locks, etc) that will be the true breakouts this year.

Let’s Get Virtual

Virtual reality is poised for a huge breakout in 2016; we know this. The debut of Oculus Rift is imminent (and the latest version will be at CES), services (including Facebook) are already supporting 360-degree video and simpler viewers like Google Cardboard have whetted the appetite for immersive experiences.  And let’s not forget about VR’s cousins: 360-degree video and augmented reality. Camera systems — both simple and sophisticated — for capturing dynamic footage will be a big focus, and augmented reality systems could see a huge boost in popularity before you know it.

Mophie Space Pack Doubles Battery Life And Phone Storage

January 13th, 2014 by Christen

How would you like a battery pack that not only doubles your battery life but also doubles your phone storage?  Mophie announced the Mophie Space Pack at CES last week, promising the new battery pack would not only double your battery life but also your iPhone 5 or 5S’ storage capacity.

Mophie Space Pack

The Space Pack boasts the same 1,700mAh battery as the Air, (its’ predicessor) both devices feel about the same.

The space pack, however comes in both 16GB and 32GB varieties, which will more than double your storage for photos, music, and movies. Mophie even goes a step further with an intuitive storage management system –  its own Space app to handle keeping up with your saved items. The TASK app is really intuitive: it’s immediately accessible to anyone who has used iOS 7. Music and movies can be played from within the app, and you can keep all your documents in one place on your phone — even ones the iPhone can’t read. You can’t autosync from outside the app, but it will pull in all your photos and files if you give it the correct prompt. And if you connect the device to your computer, it reads like any other hard drive.

The Mophie Space Pack is available for preorder on Mophie’s site for $149.95 for 16GB and $179.95 for 32GB. It’ll hit retail on March 14th.

MiPow Playbulb: Smart Home Lighting, Sound and Alarm Clock In One

January 10th, 2014 by Christen

BRIGHT IDEA: A smart home accessory that combines, light, sound and Bluetooth capabilities – the MiPow Playbulb.

One of the most unique findings at CES 2014 was undoubtedly the MiPow Playbulb which is the perfect introductory step into making any home and connected home in seconds.  (Check out my video)  The MiPow Playbulb combines three home accessories (that you’re probably using already) and stores them into one compact gadget that you can control from any iOS device.  As a lightbulb, wireless Bluetooth speaker and alarm clock – the MiPow Playbulb relays that you don’t have to own the latest ultra high def television or talking refrigerator to enjoy the benefits of a connected home.

mipow 2

Control your lighting and music from an iOS, Android or most other Bluetooth-enabled devices

The Playbulb is a fresh new Bluetooth Smart LED speaker light allowing you to combine you light with music and control both from your mobile device.  The familiar light bulb shaped design and technology delivers a combination of stylish looks and good function in one.  It’s wireless and cord-free, you simply screw it into any lamp-socket and operate it just like a normal light.  You can play music from your iOS, Android or most other Bluetooth-enabled devices and is an ideal accessory for student dorms, apartments or any small spaces in need of light and sound.

mipow 3

As long as your mobile device supports Bluetooth, you can also stream music directly to the Playbulb. Just about any audio format will work. Simply stand within 30 feet of the light bulb, pair the devices and press play. The Playbulb’s speakers weren’t created to replace your home entertainment sound system, but if you use bedside nightstand lighting or desktop lighting in your home office – this accessory just may be the perfect fit for you and your home.

mipow 4

Whether listening to music at home alone or hosting a small get-together, the Playbulb’s sound quality is just fine.  You can pair music with the Playbulb’s smart home alarm clock capabilities and begin your day the way that you want.   You can create “alarm schedules” that could play “Good Morning” by the John Legend – as your room gradually brightens in the morning, or Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata” as it dims at bedtime.

If you have a small space that could use compact, multitasking devices – the Playbulb is one of the more unique Bluetooth speakers on the market. The sound quality is moderate, but the novelty, functional design and convenience factors makes this device something worth looking at once it’s available later this year.  For more information visit

The Tech Best Bets At CES 2014: (Wearables) Mimo Baby Monitor

January 8th, 2014 by Christen

LIVE from the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, we’re counting down only the best products and technologies of CES 2014.  Wearable technology is a huge trend this year, from smart watches to unique baby monitors – the best tech is about using real-time information to help users live their best lives today.  Throughout the Consumer Electronics Show, there have been plenty of announcements and over the top debuts of wearable technology devices for the entire family – check out one of the tech best bets of “wearables” seen at CES 2014, the Mimo Baby Monitor.

Mimo Baby Monitor interview

Getting ready to interview Carson Darling, founder of tech company Rest Devices & Mimo.

Intel, along with tech company Rest Devices, has begun the shipping process of a new product: Smart baby body suits called “Mimo.” You know, a baby onesie with an Internet connection.  Here’s how it works: Two green stripes run down the front of the outfit, acting as respiratory sensors. Additionally, a detachable turtle clip is used to insert another sensor to monitor the baby’s temperature, movement and body position. The outfits will send “updates” to an IOS or Android phone app about the above data as well as the baby’s respiratory patterns.  “You can look at your smartphone and know that everything is OK,” Carson Darling, founder of tech company Rest Devices.

Mimo Baby Monitor

You can monitor your baby’s motion from your smartphone… I know this will be on my baby shower registry in the future.

The clothing part of the onesie has started production, however, the sensory clip won’t be available until summer. When that time comes, the starter kit will be available for $199 or $29 for a set of two onesies through Rest Devices website, Mimo baby or Amazon.

The Mimo Baby Monitor is ultimately for new parents who want to monitor their new baby without the “hovering parent” tendencies.  Carson mentioned that this will be the go-to device for new parents who value their (much deserved) sleep, and I’m sure the Mimo Baby Monitor will certainly be on baby shower registries this year.

Mimo Baby Monitor

Long nights pacing back and forth with a baby? No thanks… I’ll get a Mimo!
