February 28th, 2013 by Tiffany

BET has done it again with their ninth annual fashion event, Rip The Runway, filmed Wednesday night at the historic Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC! With a sexy venue, two stunning hosts, and a variety of new and popular performers, BET had the perfect recipe for another successful year for Rip The Runway! Following a performance at the Super Bowl and taking over the awards scene with appearances at the Grammy Awards and the Academy Awards, superstar Kelly Rowland brought her fashion sense and rising sex appeal to Rip The Runway. Co-host and "Real Husbands of Hollywood" star Boris Kodjoe, added the muscles and just as much sex appeal to bring this year's show to another level of sexy.

Boris not only brought his muscles and sexiness, but he also premiered his clothing line, Alfa Male, on the Rip The Runway stage. (This will be his second attempt at a successful line of clothing after he and his younger brother released Ziami in Germany back in 2003 and did a soft release in Atlanta in 2008. You can find more on his clothing line here
Between Meek Mills, Jaden Smith, Trinidad James, Omarion, and Luke James BET had the perfect combination of talent and sex appeal, mixed with elite industry models and fresh fashion for the entire studio audience to enjoy.  Jaden Smith proved that he is definitely talented and ready to make his mark in this industry as a performer and designer.  Be on the look out for his new collection and very special model-sister Willow making an appearance down the catwalk once Rip The Runway airs March 20, 2013 at 8 PM EST.

Oh How We Love ‘Black Girls Rock’!

October 17th, 2011 by WAWA   The award show, Black Girls Rock taped last night in the historic Paradise Theater in Bronx, NY. The Divas and Dorks team had an opportunity to cover the event and experience the STAR power and GIRL power of the night—and it was definitely an amazing time! There were dozens of powerful women that graced the stage of Black Girl’s Rock last night, and in my opinion one of the most amazing moments was hearing Angela Davis speak. Infamously known for her involvement in the Communist Party, civil rights movement, Black Panther Party and listed on the FBI’s Most Wanted list, she eloquently inspired the crowd with her acceptance speech.  The crowd greeted Ms. Davis with clinched fists raised in the air and a round of applause. The revolutionary spoke of being insecure when she saw a young girl wearing a t-shirt of her image—but then later felt empowered by this new generation that looked up to her heroism. Another acceptance speech to be noted was that of Tatyana Ali. The former, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air star wrote a letter to “herself” as a young girl. The letter discussed lessons such as, working hard, taking time to love, listening to her parents and pursuing her education. Annnnnd did any of you divasanddorkers know that Ms. Ali graduated from Harvard University??? Yeah, I didn’t either, but she definitely did, haha!—no joke though. Now was this before or after her web-series Buppies? *yikes*.

Laurie-Ann was there of course and was a sweetheart in person as much as she was on the show, “Born to Dance”. Gots to love her and all her boom-kack’dness. Biggest uh-oh of the night was newbie, Elle Varner who lost her footing and fell flat on her behind while performing. The poor child was winded throughout her whole performance and to make matters worse, she fell. The crowd was sympathetic and she received a round of applause, but it was awkward as all get out to watch—especially since she had to perform twice due to the snafu #deepbreath #isitoveryet. Other yikes of the night included hearing Estelle hit the last note of her performance and enduring the awkwardness of Alek Wek read the teleprompter while delivering an award. Faves of the night included performances from Erykah, Jill Scott, Mary J, Melanie Fiona, Mary Mary and then watching Regina King and Tracee Ellis Ross’ bloopers and commentary between takes. Last but not least, a young lady named Dyci Manns was honored last night for her work in creating a program that develops leaders who create solutions to end poverty and help impoverished communities.  Dyci won a MAD Girl Award and will be honored on Black Girls Rock as well. Check out her website, and go Dyci! Tune in on Nov 6th on BET to watch all of the amazingness of Black Girls Rock --- and tell us why you rock!

LIVE Updates – BET Awards 2011

June 26th, 2011 by Christen

Hey guys - I'm reporting live from the BET Awards here at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.  Check out the Ford Social Media Lounge, LIVE @DIVASANDDORKS tweets and the #BETAwards hashtag for the latest news, interviews and backstage excitement.

SEE WHAT TWITTER HAS TO SAY...   FULL RECAP: The hilarious Kevin Hart kept the crowd laughing out loud as a Hollywood House Husband during the BET AWARDS '11 opening act with Bobby Brown, Jermaine Dupri, Anthony Anderson, Nelly, and Nick Cannon. Chris Brown's powerful performance medley of "She Ain't You," "Look at Me Now," and "Paper Scissor Rock" illustrated just why he was named the 2011 Best Male R&B Artist, Video of the Year, Best Collaboration, and Coca-Cola Viewer's Choice Award winner when he took to the stage in two performances collaborating with Busta Rhymes and Big Sean.  Later, a precocious Justin Bieber propositioned Nicki Minaj on stage when he said, "I'm all grown up now. I turn 18 next year so...what's up?" Legendary songstress and diva extraordinaire Patti LaBelle was the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award and her tribute was a performance unlike anything ever seen before.  Beginning with a special introduction from another musical icon, Gladys Knight, Cee Lo Green took to the stage in a throwback Patti LaBelle costume performing "Somebody Loves You Baby," while Marsha Ambrosius jazzed up the room with her spot on rendition of "If Only You Knew," before the great Shirley Caesar took the crowd—and Patti LaBelle—to tears singing "You Are My Friend." But it was Patti herself that brought the house down performing two of her greatest hits, "Love, Need and Want You" and "Lady Marmalade." Steve Harvey uplifted the audience in his acceptance speech for his Humanitarian Award. The cast of the Five Heartbeats movie surprised the audience with a reunited performance with R&B crooners After 7 with the famous hit, "Nights Like This," for the 20-year anniversary of the film. The beautiful Kerry Washington graced the stage for BET's Shine A Light moment to honor individuals who make the world a better place for young people. Celebrating the 10-year Anniversary of her first album, Songs In A Minor, Alicia Keys graced the BET AWARDS '11 stage for a medley of her hits with Bruno Mars and Rick Ross as well as for the world premiere her latest song, "Typewriter." Additional highlights of the 14 performances include: Trey Songz sexy, shirt-ripping rendition of "Making Love Faces" and "Unusual," and was later joined by Kelly Rowland to perform her smash hit, "Motivation," Donnie McClurkin, Deitrick Haddon and Mary Mary uplifted the audience with their rendition of the gospel hit, "Thank You Lord," in tribute to the late Walter Hawkins; Mary J. Blige, Anita Baker, DJ Khaled, and Jadakiss kicked off the show with a monumental mix of hits "All Night Long," "Joy," "Happy," Dreams," "Real Love," "Rapture," and "Over Til It's Over"; Jill Scott performed a soulful rendition of "Rolling Hills" with actor and DJ Idris ElbaDJ Khaled, Rick Ross, Drake and Lil' Wayne amped the crowd performing "I'm the One"; and Beyonce "emailed BET a Pre-recorded performance" singing "Best Thing I Never Had" and "End of Time" via live telecast from Britain's Glastonbury Festival. This year's In Memoriam tribute celebrated the lives of Cali Swag District member M-Bone, Clarence Clemons, Teena Marie, Gil Scott Heron and Nate Dogg with performances and appearances by Doug E. Fresh and Cali Swag District, Queen Latifah, Ledisi, Scott Mayo, Snoop Dogg and Warren G. In continuing the good that BET's S.O.S.: Saving Ourselves initiative has made over the years, the BET AWARDS '11 contained a special moment to show support for the victims of the tornadoes in the Southeast through a special message from Rev. Al Sharpton.

We all remember the most OMG moment of the BET Award show night. Tiffany Green - A fan tonight on the BET Awards mixed up Rihanna and Drake for the Viewer’s Choice award, when it was indeed Chris Brown. The audience was in complete shock. BET executive Stephen G. Hill admitted to being the “human”  error and apologized.

The award was initially presented on stage by Tiffany Green, a contest winner. Reading from an HTC Evo View 4G tablet, which all presenters used to announce winners, Green first declared Chris Brown the winner, then quickly backpeddled and said the award went to Rihanna.

Terrence J, who was also on stage, then presented the award to Drake, only to have show host Kevin Hart give the award back to Brown at the end of the broadcast. - AWKWARD... Green explained on Twitter that the tablet had said Chris Brown, but the teleprompter had said Rihanna, hence the on-stage change up (and Drake in turn accepting the award for the song he collaborated with Rihanna on, which seemed to confuse Jenkins). The AP captures the series of events in this video:

In addition to all of these OMG moments, the full list of BET AWARDS '11 winners are: Best Female R&B Artist: Rihanna Best Male R&B Artist: Chris Brown Best Group: Diddy-Dirty Money Best Gospel Artist: Mary Mary Best Female Hip Hop Artist: Nicki Minaj Best Male Hip Hop Artist: Kanye West Best New Artist: Wiz Khalifa Best Collaboration: Chris Brown f/ Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes "Look At Me Now" Video of the Year: Chris Brown f/ Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes "Look At Me Now" Video Director of the Year: Chris Robinson Best Actress: Taraji P. Henson Best Actor: Idris Elba Young Stars Award: Jaden Smith and Willow Smith Best Movie: For Colored Girls Subway Sportswoman of the Year: Serena Williams Subway Sportsman of the Year: Michael Vick Centric Award: Marsha Ambrosius "Far Away" Best International Act: 2Face Idibia (Nigeria) and D'Banj (Nigeria) Coca-Cola Viewer's Choice Award: Chris Brown f/ Lil Wayne & Busta Rhymes - "Look at me Now" Humanitarian Award: Steve Harvey Lifetime Achievement Award: Patti LaBelle

BET Awards ’11 Tech Replacement…

June 20th, 2011 by Christen This year's BET Awards will be filled with the usual variety of Hip Hop Superstars, R&B Phenomena's  and A-List Actors - but one thing will be noticeably absent and replaced.  The HTC EVO View 4G from Sprint will replace traditional envelopes during each of the BET Awards winner announcement.  Viewers will witness this tablet in action for the first time, during it's product launch weekend.

As previously announced, actor and comedian Kevin Hart will host the BET Awards '11 with performances by Alicia Keys, Chris Brown, Drake, Jill Scott and Lil Wayne.

For more than a decade, the BET AWARDS has reigned as the biggest family event rivaling all top awards shows.  Having escalated each year in industry influence with A-list celebrity nominations, star-studded appearances and on-of-a-kind performances, the BET AWARDS has undoubtedly established itself as the gold standard in creating memorable moments year after year.  The highly-anticipated event airs live, Sunday, June 26 at 8pm from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, CA and is guaranteed to be the hottest ticket on television.

Divas and Dorks will be live from the red carpet and the Ford Social Media Lounge giving you the all the HTC gadget & entertainment scoop from backstage before it hits your TV screens.

Last Model Standing, MTV3s Rock Dinner and BET Spring Bling.   Recently, Divas and Dorks got the opportunity to sit down with BET Rip The Runway highlighted designer Lila Nikole Rivera to discuss fashion, passion and cat fights!  Check out which superstar she'd like to see rocking her designs and her advice on how to achieve success in the fashion industry.   1. Describe an early moment in your career where you created THE design that convinced you that becoming a fashion designer was for you. “My first swim suit design is the one that convinced me that I had a future in the swimwear industry. I drew a crazy design on a napkin then went to class and executed it with perfection. People started asking me to buy the item but I only had enough material to make one. I went out and purchased similar fabric and duplicated it for quite a few people, I kept the original as a trophy.”   2. Which celebrity would you love to see Rip The Runway in your designs and why? “The celebrity I'd most like to see wearing my collection would be Jennifer Lopez, Meagan Fox, Katy Perry or Gwen Stefani. These ladies are all trend setters, sex kittens, daring and are always right on with their fashion sense.”   3. How do you see your designs evolving, from your earlier designs to now? “I think my designs have evolved in many ways. First the collections are more cohesive and each collection has a variety of styles that all compliment each other.                                                                               Designer:  Lila Nikole Rivera The fit is better and accentuates a women's curves better as well. The items are also more luxurious and chic.”

4. What advice would you give to aspiring designers who aspire to reach your level of success? “The key to success is dedication and persistence. Live for what you love, give your all and you will reap the benefits of a successful career accompanied by the opportunity to love what you do for work.”

5. We all know that ANYTHING can happen during runway shows. Describe a behind the scenes moment that people won't get to see during BET's Rip The Runway...

“Well this years show for Rip The runway's backstage area was pretty calm and collective. The only fun behind the set was that we all joined in a toast of Cafe patron before the girls went on the runway. During another large fashion show for Mercedes Benz fashion week was quite crazy. Two models were about to get into a fight right before they walked onto the catwalk. We had to literally push them away from each other and push one of the girls onto the runway. Was an insane night!”
