Reality TV Dating 101 (…And The Lessons Learned…)

January 8th, 2013 by Lifestyle Staff After watching enough reality TV you can feel as if you've learned absolutely nothing, and even possibly lost a few brain cells. However, some of the most fascinating story lines in reality TV come from the single woman’s search for lasting love, or romantic couples on the brink of disaster sprinkled with drama induced by egos, cocktails, a camera crew with millions of viewers tuning in weekly. After seeing a gambit of these shows over the years, what lessons can we really take and learn from it all? Here are a few reality TV lessons pertaining to dating.

Be careful to whom you give your love away.

catfish-the-show-mtv Take it slow and do your research. We've seen from Catfish the importance of doing your research. shawty-lo-all-my-babies-mamas-580x332But knowing someone's background can also prevent you from getting caught up like the women on All My Babies’ Mamas (spring 2013) about Shawty Lo, his 11 children, their 10 different mothers and his new 19-year-old girlfriend. It's important to know what you what from your partner in terms of a family, and the possibility of an extended family. If children keep popping up while you’re dating, it’s probably time for you to pop up out of there and find someone else!

Move at your own pace and don’t let others influence you or tell you what to do.

Kandi and Todd-Eat Cupcakes In the fifth season of Real Housewives of Atlanta, Kandi Burruss found love among the show's production team with her new boo, Todd Tucker. Even though RHOA co-stars have been pressing Kandi and Todd to get engaged, they hold firm in doing what works for them and shutting down those conversations before they get too deep. A perfect example of doing  things at your own pace.

Communicate clearly what you want in the relationship and stand by your words.

At every turn Chrissy Lampkin boldly made it known what she expected from Jim Jones, starting on Love & Hip Hop and culminating on to Chrissy & Mr. Jones. Chrissy was determined she would not be walked all over by Jim’s mother; she demanded compensation for helping him build his fashion line; she set out clear boundaries for his interaction with other women; and she refused to have a child with him until he was mature enough to commit himself to her through marriage. Love her or hate her, Chrissy earned Jim’s respect by being a strong woman who knew her worth in his life, what she wanted and stood by her beliefs.

Pressuring a man into marriage is a guaranteed fail!

Kenya and Walter Believe it or not those peachy housewives have so much to teach us! RHOA’s Kenya Moore may have known how to win Miss USA but she has no clue how to win over Walter Jackson’s heart. She has shown us that by bringing every conversation around to “When do you plan to propose?” has gotten her nowhere but sleeping alone. Don’t wait for a relationship that doesn't make you happy, but at the same time don’t force it into a ditch by arguing about marriage. SN ladies: Fake cooking a meal on nationwide TV does not work! There are too many simple and easy recipes out there for that.

Relax and enjoy the dating scene. Dating should be fun!

Joe Budden and Kaylin Garcia-kissing

Use the “getting to know each other” phase as a chance to try new places, get dolled up and try out new make-up, take trips and do things you've never done before with the new person in your life. Well known exhibitionists Joe Budden and Kaylin Garcia, new stars of Love & Hip Hop season 3, are frequently posting on Instagram while out together at the strip club, sunning in the pool, working out, making late night runs to the store, or having date night, among many other things. You really can see how much they enjoy these activities with each other.

Keep some things private in your relationship.

TI-FamilyHustle Showpage Viewers love tuning in to The Family Hustle to see the King of the South, TI aka Tip Harris, be a daddy to his large brood of creative and fun-loving kids. Everyone knows how much TI and Tiny love each other, so keeping that part of their relationship private and focusing on the Harris children, helps keep their love solid as a rock. Remember: Everything is not for everybody, but there is definitely a lesson to be learned from all of the reality TV foolishness and drama.

Celebrate WithoutSole’s 3rd Annual Sneaker Ball Fundraiser In ATL

October 30th, 2012 by Tiffany

What happens when you gather a bunch of influencers for an amazing cause?

This will be the third year Initial eVennts hosts its annual Sneaker Ball in hopes of announcing the month long collection of thousands of shoes. The Sneaker Ball is the finale event to the Without Sole shoe campaign, which is a 30 day push through the month of october to collect 12,000 shoes. Initial eVennts' co-founders Evan Eskridge and Oluwatoyin Salami decided to put together multiple talents as a call to action. “We wanted to be the change we wish to see -a group of young people doing something for nonprofit instead of looking for profit. Pave a different path.”  Which in turn created the Without Sole campaign that is spreading across the globe.

This mission is particularly interesting because it’s shoes instead of clothes, like most charities. Oluwatoyin Salami (Co-founder) decided on shoes because her father is from Nigeria and told her stories of him being six years old and having to mow someone’s lawn just to get a pair of shoes. His family couldn’t afford to buy him any and without shoes he wouldn’t have been able to continue in school. Her father is now a doctor, and she finds it empowering to think that these pair of shoes could be the foundation for many kids to go to school and become future doctors, lawyers and teachers. People often take shoes for granted and don't realize that without shoes there's not only discomfort but some major hindrances, like going to school, work and other public places that are vital for success.

The non-profit does a variety of events within the community throughout 30 days of October. The Sneaker Ball  is an annual event where the sum of shoes collected throughout the campaign is announced. Anticipation builds each year as the amount of shoes collected grows. Last year 5,500 shoues were donated and distributed to those in need. This event is a very trendy event in which everyone dresses up, but wears their favorite sneakers. Everything at the ball will be fresh from the shoes, to the mindset, to the food. "Being as this is the finale everyone should have a fresh mindset with our mission in mind and the hard work under our belt. The food will be fresh as well from Organic vendors." It's the launch of a new life for someone some where else and the launch of a new way of thinking for the locals.   Majority will benefit the homeless population in Atlanta, but will ultimately touch people globally that are otherwise unable to obtain a single pair of sneakers. U-Haul and TIWAWORKS are two returning sponsors again this year. New sponsors include Enterprise, Black Tie BBQ, RiousDesign, Vinnie's Styles, and others.   The Sneaker Ball will be held on Friday, November 2nd at the trendy Goat Farm in northwest Atlanta - tickets are $10 online/$20 at the door and donations will be accepted for those that still want to donate.  Visit for complete donation locations, event ticketing and information, as well as sponsor and organization information.

Women Interactive Creative Technology Festival (I’m Speaking!)

October 10th, 2012 by Christen It's a great time to be a woman in technology!  A once male dominated field - filled with pocket protectors and scientific calculators is now becoming inhabited by fun, fierce and creative women with a lot to say and even more to contribute to technology's advancement.  That's why I'm so excited to be participating in the Women Interactive Creative Technology Festival October 12-13th at Spelman College in Atlanta, GA.

Presented by the Art of Genius Creative Technology Series and Spelman College's Digital Moving Image Salon (DMIS), Women Interactive Creative Technology Festival is a one day interactive technology festival for women of color who produce and share media content.  In keeping with the fast paced nature of technology, the WI Festival will allow college students, collegiate faculty, technology and media professionals the opportunity to interact with innovative technology by following the three pillars in which the festival is based: Interact. Educate. Inspire.   During the festival, I'll be joining Mattie James - Mattieologie / Fashion Bloggers of Color, Tami Reed of Talking with Tami and Lamar & Roni Tyler of Black and Married with discussing ways to "Monetize Your Creativity" and harnessing the power of cashing in on your brand.  We see them on television all the time, people who’ve managed to make a living off of their creativity. But you don’t have to be the next Scarlett Johansson and make $20 million a film to make a living off of your creativity. It is possible for us regular folks to make money off of the content we create. While we won’t be able to show you how to make $20 million off of your compelling piece of content, we can provide you with some tools to begin turning your content into dollars.  For a full schedule of amazing workshops, screenings or panels click here for Women Interactive Programming Schedule   Interactive Atrium - Get a "hands on" approach to technology getting to play video games, try new apps, and participate in technology product demos with two full floors of interactive fun! BET Hip Hop Awards 2012: Fellas, Fashion & A Few Tech Fetishes

October 2nd, 2012 by Tiffany

Before the confirmed fights, chain snatchings and melees was the BET Hip Hop Awards Red Carpet interviews.  Since the BET Hip Hop Awards took place in none other than the heart of Southern hip hop music, Atlanta, GA. it's only right that the talent as well as the fashion here is definitely in a league of its own. We hit the red carpet to find out what fashions, trends, and gadgets a few of Hip Hop's rising stars &  celebs just can't live without!

Diggy says when it comes to fashion he's an accessories kind of dude. "I like neck wear and bracelets a lot, but definitely love kicks a lot too." One gadget he can't leave the house without "My iPhone! I'll turn around for that." I just knew Diggy had the iPhone 5, but looks like his schedule hasn't allowed for it yet. "I've been traveling everywhere so much since it came out that I haven't been able to make it to the AT&T store, but I'm going to get it though."

We spoke to Mr. "Snapback and Tattoos" himself, Driicky Graham. To my surprise snapbacks are not his fashion must-haves on a daily basis. "Fox tails and I love Louie V. belts, I got one on right now actually."  He doesn't have the iPhone 5 yet either, but says he's still "rocking with Siri on the 4S, so I'm good for now, but I'm definitely going to check out the 5." He will be one of the many rappers part of the this year's Cyphers.

Super producer Mr. Bangladesh (left) definitely gets my vote for most interesting style and outlook on technology. The Grammy winning producer has worked with names like Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Lil' Wayne, and his latest project with Brandy. When asked about his fearless style he says-- "This is just me, I came out of the womb with {style like} this." I asked if he was as advanced in technology as he was in fashion and had the iPhone 5? He definitely gave the most interesting answer unlike any other celeb-- "No, I'm not into the hustle. One thing about Bang, you're not going to hustle Bang. Technology is the hustle world. There's nothing different in the iPhone 5 that they couldn't have put in the iPhone 4 or the 1. Apple has these smart technicians- you can't tell me that they didn't think about making the picture clearer before the next one was created. You know what I'm saying? It's a hustle. I have the old iPhone not because I wanted it but because I was in the U.K. and they told me I needed it. I'm not for the hustles."

His newest artist Fast Life (above right) says he prefers to get his clothes from all over the world. " I got some Balenciaga, Fendi, and vintage Valentino type . But my favorite piece I'd have to say is my gold... I can't leave the house without my gold." He has a mixtape coming soon and is striving to be the next big name under Bangladesh Records.

Looks like the iPhone 5 is still on many celeb's to-do list, while others refuse to be "hustled" by it. So WHO was the first to boast having the iPhone 5 on the red carpet?

Q Parker from the Atlanta based singing group 112 was the first one on the red carpet that could boast of having the newest iPhone.

"I don't really have a style, I just like to be expressive. I'm not afraid of textures or colors."  That was clear considering he was the only male on the red carpet wearing sequins. "However I feel that's what I do." So what does Q look for a lady to have as a part of her style package? --"I don't really get into that. I just really like for a lady to be confident in whatever she puts on and know that she's sexy. If she knows it, I know it. Confidence is the whole package." Ladies take notes!

When I told Q he was the first one I've come across with the iPhone 5 he said--"You know a lot of people don't have it because they're letting the glitches get out of it. A lot of people have been having problems with the new operating system. Luckily I haven't had any problems and I love the new iPhone."

Here are a few more red carpet surprises, show downs, show outs:

Rapper 2 Chainz showed up on the red carpet looking like a bag of skittles, but also like a dad. He brought along his daughter and expecting partner as well. Who would have known he was a family man?

We're still left to wonder who showed up as the Ninja Turtle squad...

Cash Out and his Chucky doll accessory was the loudest fashion statement on the red carpet by far. This is definitely a red carpet first.

Fans can look forward to another year of Hip Hop greats & hot acts rocking the Atlanta stage next week.  Rapper LL Cool J spoke in a tribute to hip-hop manager Chris Lighty, who committed suicide last month behind his Bronx townhouse. Q-Tip, Fat Joe, Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliott and 50 Cent took the stage to perform, as did Rick Ross, P. Diddy, 2 Chainz and Future.

Check out more photos from the Hip Hop Awards red carpet below... You can check out the 2012 BET Hip Hop Awards & Performances Tuesday 10/9 at 8P/7C. Only on BET!

Using The Power of Sole To Help The Community

October 18th, 2011 by Tiffany One diva from Atlanta, GA is on a mission to reach 11,000 people across the world, from Atlanta to Africa. Primary mission: Obtain 11,000 pairs of shoes in 30 days to benefit those with no shoes. Tired of the younger generation being represented as having a lack of integrity and self absorbed, Oluwwatoyin Salami and business partner Evan Eskridge, both 24, wanted to bridge the gap between quality, creativity, and purpose. We decided to put together multiple talents as a call to action. “We wanted to be the change we wish to see -a group of young people doing something for nonprofit instead of looking for profit. Pave a different path.” We were curious to know why 11,000 shoes? “Soles4Soul Inc. is the charity and they have a mission to collect eleven million shoes in the year 2011. We figured that the demographic we are targeting definitely can contribute 11,000 shoes to help this cause. Since its just one month we decided on 11,000.” Majority will benefit the homeless population in Atlanta, but will ultimately touch people globally that are otherwise unable to obtain a single pair of sneakers. This mission is particularly interesting to me because it’s shoes instead of clothes, like most charities. Oluwatoyin decided on shoes because her father is from Nigeria and once told her a story of him being six years old and having to mow someone's lawn just to get a pair of shoes because his family couldn't afford to buy him any. Without the shoes he wouldn't have been able to continue in school. Her father is now a doctor, and she finds it empowering to think that these pair of shoes could be the foundation for many kids to go to school and become future doctors and lawyers. “We will be doing different events throughout the community in 30 days. The finale will be the Sneaker Ball, this is an annual event and the theme this year will be "fresh start". This event is a very trendy event in which everyone dresses up, but wears their favorite sneakers. Everything at the ball will be fresh from the shoes, to the mindset, to the food. Being as this is the finale everyone should have a fresh mindset with our mission in mind and the hard work under our belt. The food will be fresh as well from Organic  vendors. How can you contribute to the cause? “We have various bins set up in Atlanta, which are listed on our website at Also follow us on Twitter, @withoutsole, for updates on upcoming events, giveaways, & more opportunities to contribute.”
