New Year, New NYC Subway Commute App

December 28th, 2012 by Christen

New York City is finally giving subway riders a high-tech option to figure out when their train is coming.

20121228-113438.jpg

MTA has released a free app that provides real-time estimates of train arrivals so riders can better plan out when to show up at the station. The app is called Subway Time and is currently only available on the iPhone, though there are plans to release it on other platforms in the future.

Other third-party apps like NextStop and NYC Mate also provide subway arrival time estimates for New York City, but the new Subway Time app has the potential to be more accurate and useful by relying on the MTA’s signal data for train arrivals.

Subway-Time-App

According to the Wall Street Journal, the MTA has spent $228 million over 11 years installing advanced signals on select train lines, which can be used to provide minute-by-minute updates on a train’s location. As a result, the app is limited to just showing train times for the red and green subway lines as well as the Grand Central-Times Square shuttle, though there are plans to add the L train in the next 6-12 months and the 7 train by 2016. Unfortunately, the app will only work when there is an Internet connection, which means it is really only useful at above ground stations and the limited handful of stations that have WiFi.

If you’re looking for the silver lining in the ever-looming MTA fare increase, why not check this app out and let us know how it works for you!

Is Apple & Google Finally Playing Nice? Google Maps App Could Be Coming Back To iPhones Soon!

November 16th, 2012 by Christen

The Google gods & Cupertino chiefs have heard your cries and THEY HAVE SPOKEN.  With millions of iPhone users crying foul over the Apple maps debacle, it’s being reported that Google is prepping Google Maps for the iPhone, offering a fix for customers dissatisfied with Apple’s poorly received Maps app, according to a report.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Google is distributing a test version of its mapping app to people outside the company. Google is “putting finishing touches” on the app before it hits the App Store. However, it’s unclear exactly when that will happen. If and when that comes to pass, consumers will have an alternative to Apple’s Maps app, which comes preinstalled with iPhones.

Apple declined to comment on the matter. A Google rep told The WSJ: “We believe Google Maps are the most comprehensive, accurate and easy-to-use maps in the world. Our goal is to make Google Maps available to everyone who wants to use it, regardless of device, browser, or operating system.”

The introduction of Google Maps comes after Apple faced a pr crisis over its Maps app in September. The app, which came preinstalled on the iPhone 5 got poor reviews as users pointed out many inaccuracies. The outcry, exacerbated by the fact that Google Maps was not available on iOS6 or the iPhone 5, led to a rare public apology by CEO Tim Cook, an incident that was said to have prompted the resignation of mobile chief Scott Forstall.

Google’s acquiescence would signal the company’s calculation that promoting its app is more important than hurting its primary competitor in mobile phones. The complicated relationship between Apple and Google has already led to YouTube being withdrawn as a standard app on iOS 6.

Hopefully Apple makes this right for it’s consumers, if not, I’m sure to become a new Android consumer sooner than later.

Divas On Destinations: How The TripIt App Has Saved My Travel Sanity…

June 19th, 2012 by Christen

As a traveling girl on the go, I have been to about 10 different cities within the last 30 days. You can imagine the amount of boarding passes I’ve avoided hording by taking advantage of airline apps on my smartphone – but since I’ve downloaded TripIt Pro, I’ve taken my travel sanity to a whole new level of zen…

TripIt makes getting to your destinations easier, by organizing all your trip plans in one place. No more double-checking your calendar against your mobile airline app for reservation dates, TripIt has you completely covered. TripIt creates an itinerary in seconds – using email confirmations from virtually all travel sites, plus other activities like restaurant reservations and concert tickets. (Seriously, I RSVP’d for a twitter chat via EventBrite and moments later, I received confirmation plus it was automatically added to my calendar by TripIt.)

My travel life has transformed to a whole new world of difference. Thanks to BrothaTech, for introducing me to the TripIt app – now I’m one of millions of travelers who use the TripIt app to organize and share travel & trips. By simply forwarding confirmation emails from anywhere you book to plans@tripit.com, TripIt automatically creates on simple, smart itinerary to access on a smartphone, calendar or anywhere online.

TripIt at TBEX

As a new fan girl of the TripIt app, I just had to share my experience with fellow bloggers…

If your travel plans require a bit more organization and assistance, you can easily upgrade to TripIt Pro for only $49/year. TripIt Pro acts like a personal travel assistant that keeps travelers in the know regarding flight status, alternate flights and more; tracks all frequent traveler points in one place; and monitors eligible flights for fare refunds.

I recently downloaded a 3-month trial of TripIt Pro which has made me a believer and evangelist of all things TripIt. Recently, my connecting flight was delayed and the airline agent didn’t know how soon travel could resume. Within minutes, I received a text message from TripIt informing me of my updated departure time & gate information nearly 30minutes before the airline agent informed the remaining passengers on my flight. I was able to make the best use of my time while in a random city all because of this app.

Available on most smartphone app stores including Apple App Store, Android Marketplace, Amazon Appstore, Window phone Marketplace and Blackberry App World.

For more information, visit TripIt.com and connect via Twitter @TripIt and Facebook.com/Tripit.

Calling All NYC Tourists & Transplants…There’s A New App Just For You!

April 2nd, 2012 by Christen

With over 50 million tourists annually, New York City is launching a better map to help them navigate a little easier or at least one that makes it easier to patronize city businesses.  A new iPhone map app from the city’s official tourism center portrays businesses not as little red pins, but with their logos. It incorporates social media updates, OpenTable booking capabilities and daily deals directly into the map.

The app is a co-branded version of a map app called CityMaps that launched earlier this month. By hooking into a bundle of APIs, it’s able to expand beyond capabilities of a typical online map.

Store owners can claim their spot on the map in order to curate their presence on it, and eventually the startup hopes to make money by charging them for some of these privileges.

Advertisements for the new co-branded version of CityMaps will appear on bus shelters, on taxicab video screens and even on a Time Square jumbotron.

Which NYC based apps are you currently using to navigate through the “concrete jungle where dreams are made of”?  Would you use this new app as an NYC tourist, transplant or original borough dweller?
