Social Media Wins Again – MTV Announces VMA Nominations Through Instagram and Vine
Remember the days when Kurt Loder would pop up on your MTV screen and they would announce the latest news for the MTV Video Music Awards? Those days seem to be far behind us now that MTV announced the nominations for the 2013 MTV VMA’s “Video of the Year” award through social media networks, Instagram and Vine. That’s a first for any awards show to announce any nominations through social media.

To build anticipation for the show, MTV launched a successful cross platform social campaign, #RoadToTheVMAs, which features the Moonman in a myriad of iconic locations throughout Brooklyn and NYC. Thus far, the campaign has garnered more than 25 million social media impressions to date including a quarter of a million likes on Instagram, 16 million impressions on Twitter, 8 million impressions on Facebook and 1 million impressions on Tumblr. Throughout the day, MTV will continue its creative use of social media by rolling out the 2013 VMA nominations as a series of imaginative stop motion videos created by 23-year old artist, Khoa, on the @MTV Instagram and Vine accounts.
Hate or love the artist performing on the MTV VMA’s , viewers take to social media networks immediately to rant or rave on what’s going on in the performance, what they’re wearing, and their lack or surplus of talent. So it makes sense that MTV announced the award that you have to vote on (MTV VMA “video of the year”) , on Instagram and Vine. Awards like these show the major impact of technology and social media. The need to know and easy access to information made Instagram and Vine great outlets for the nominations to be released.
