Michelle Obama Dons Monique Lhuillier For The White House Correspondents Dinner
April 29th, 2013 by NigelThis weekend all eyes were on Michelle Obama. On Saturday, April 27th the 2013 White House Correspondents Dinner took place in D.C. and the event was start studded and filled with amazing fashion choices. Of course our very fashionable first lady gave us life in the style department, opting to wear a black cap sleeve gown from American Fashion Designer Monique Lhuillier.
Though Michelle’s look was photographed from the waistline up we know the gown is amazing from the high neckline with beaded embellishment and lace detailing. Monique Lhuillier is also very well know for her red carpet attire, dressing A list divas like Nicki Minaj, Sarah Michelle, Padma Lakshmi and Naomie Harris to name a few.
FLOTUS paired this look with her famous bangs and her stunning smile. She even received a little shout out from a very happy designer via twitter for rocking one of her garments:
“I am honored @MichelleObama is wearing me to the White House correspondence dinner tonight !! She looks amazing!!! xx Monique” - Monique Lhuillier
Monique Lhuillier joins a host of other designers like Jason Wu, Alexander McQueen, Thom Browne, Tracy Reese and Michael Kors who have dressed Michelle Obama for important appearances in the past.

Divas what do we think about Michelle Obama’s White House Correspondence Dinner gown choice. Are we ready to see Michelle do something different with her hair or are you team bangs. Sound off below!

March 16th, 2013 by Lifestyle StaffSince Beyonce’s Life is But a Dream documentary hit the airwaves in February, I’ve been wondering what other celebrity documentaries would also give a better understanding. Documentaries give watchers a more realistic look into the lives of people, of thoughts behind ideas, and facts about topics viewers may not have come across otherwise. Below is a list of researched documentaries worth watching. Some are about celebrities, others about social issues and culture. All are available on Netflix, YouTube, Amazon, and/or iTunes. Get into it!
Brooklyn Boheme
During the 1980s and 90s, the Fort Greene area of Brooklyn was booming with talent. Brooklyn Boheme tells the story of these creators.
Why We Laugh: Black Comedians on Black Comedy
The film chronicles the story of Black comedy, its roots, nature, and what social and political stances inform it. From minstrels and ‘Amos ‘n Andy’ to ‘In Living Color’ and the Original Kings of Comedy, it is all discussed. There is commentary from established comedians and clips from different periods of significance in comedy.
Harvest of Shame
The documentary was produced by CBS in 1960 as a part of a series by broadcast journalist Edward R. Murrow. In Harvest of Shame, Murrow exposed the plight of America’s farm workers. It is interesting to see some of the issues of farm workers today mirroring that of those over 50 years ago. (Full Documentary)
The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975
Through the lens of Swedish filmmakers, viewers get a look at the Black Power Movement. In clips Huey P. Newton, Angela Davis, and Stokely Carmichael talk about what the movement means. There is also commentary by Erykah Badu and Harry Belafonte, among others.

A Man’s Story
Celebrated menswear designer Ozwald Boateng gives a look into is life as a designer, tailor to Hollywood’s A-list, superstar, and family man. A Man’s Story goes to the very heart of what Boateng has spent an entire career trying to distil: “what it is to be a man.”

FLOTUS Fashion: Michelle Obama 2013 Inauguration Style Recap
January 23rd, 2013 by Fashion StaffThis weekend has been momentous for the US citizens and for fashionistas across the nation. Hundreds of thousands packed National Mall to watch as Barack Obama was sworn in for a 2nd term as the Leader of the Free World. The rest who could not be there in person sat in front of their TV screen wide-eyed as he delivered a great speech. Most importantly, eyes focused at Michelle’s new bangs and her Inauguration Weekend fashions.

As the First Lady of The United States, all eyes are on you during the Inauguration weekend and Michelle Obama did not disappoint. Whether it’s kicking off the weekend for a makeover project at Burrville Elementary School in a simple blue and black printed sweater, cotton pants, and riding boots to stain bookshelves or it’s glomming it up in Michael Kors, it’s official our FLOTUS knows fashion.

Michelle and her daughters Sasha and Malia later attended the 2013 Kids’ Inaugural Concert on Saturday evening, held at the Washington Convention Center to celebrate military families. Keeping it simple again, she wore black fitted pants and a white Alexander McQueen Victorian bustle piquet shirt from the Resort 2011 collection. She styled with a fabulous bejeweled belt and red kitten heels.

As President Obama was officially sworn in for his 2nd and final term on January 20, 2013 the First Lady held her family Bible for her husband rocking a royal blue dress with a tapered waist and A-line skirt made of what looked like a silky material with a jacquard pattern by designer Reed Krakoff. She topped the dress with a same-color knit bolero-style cardigan with three-quarters-length sleeves.
Being the fab repeat rocker that she is, she started the 2nd term of her being First Lady with sequin Michael Kors dress that she was seen wearing back in 2009 now. The difference between 2013 and 2009 is these fab bags that she just had cut in for her 49 birthday this past Thursday.

As her husband was sworn in at National Mall she chose a navy silk jacquard coat and dress from designer Thom Browne. The coat was paired with a statement belt and kitten heel pumps both from J. Crew. She later changed from the kitten heels into black leather and suede knee-high boots from Reed Krakoff. It’s admirable that she continues to pair high in brands with more affordable brands to complete glam looks.
For the Inaugural Ball, Michelle again chose to wear a Jason Wu creation: a long halter-neck ruby chiffon custom gown with velvet details and an armful of sparkly bangles. She wore Jimmy Choo shoes, and a ring by Kimberly McDonald.

What were your favorite FLOTUS fashion looks of this Inauguration weekend? What did you think of her looks?
Red Carpet Fab And Gems of Wisdom from the BET 2013 Inaugural Ball
January 23rd, 2013 by Lifestyle Staff
Following President Obama’s Inaugural Ceremony and Parade, BET and Centric Networks celebrated in style at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and National Portrait Gallery with dazzling celebs, style influencers, community leaders, and media personalities from across the globe. Live performances included Bell Biv Devoe, Doug E. Fresh, and MC Lyte. It was clear from the reflections on the red carpet that stars from Hollywood to DC heard the President’s message of diversity, equality and inclusion loud and clear.

Having been in DC for the President’s first Inauguration in 2009, Access Hollywood Weekend Anchor Shaun Robinson found this time to be just as thrilling as the last. She was in awe “this incredible man, who has such a wonderful vision for our country,” gets another chance to continue his legacy. She spoke of being inspired by the President’s words of personal responsibility and making sure that we don’t have a glass ceiling.

NAACP President Ben Jealous
NAACP President Benjamin Todd Jealous remarked that Black women and men, as well as white trade unions, turned out in record numbers—defying expectations—to re-elect Barack Obama. Now he says, it’s time that people of color “internalize that we have the ability to determine who is President and we have the ability to determine the direction for this country.” Both MC Lyte and Tatyana Ali felt the same way. MC Lyte calls on us to be “participatory in the outcomes that affect us” and Tatyana wants young women to realize how powerful we truly are.

MC Lyte

Tatyana Ali
She explained, “Our lives are political. Politics is human interaction. Politics actually works properly when we all get involved, when we’re all included.” Tatyana urges young women to stay engaged and to speak out because we can be a voice to change the minds and perspectives of the people around us. Awurama Simpson, Miss Universe Ghana (2010), and Sandra Nyanchoka, Finalist on America’s Next Top Model (Cycle 12) work with young women globally to promote education and inner beauty. They want for young women to not be afraid to go after their dreams. “Education can take you anywhere and makes anyone who they want to become in life, and makes their dreams possible,” says Simpson.

Awurama Simpson and Sandra Nyanchoka

Boris Kodjoe and Nicole Ari Parker
Actors Boris Kodjoe and Nicole Ari Parker, founders of Sophie’s Voice Foundation, a charitable organization serving children and adults affected by the birth defect spina bifida, believe that “it’s important to dispel the myths around Obamacare” during this second term, “for people to really know what the President is offering and what has been put in place to protect and care for people and their families.” Happy parents to two young children, they hope that other families can take the spirit of empowerment, encouragement, and having our destiny in our own hands into the next four years.

Mikki Taylor
Echoing those thoughts was quintessential authority on all matters of beauty and style, Ms. Mikki Taylor. She held the First Lady up as an example that “we don’t have to hope for change, we can be it.” It’s time, she said, for us to “step on stage and own the spot!”
