Women Interactive Creative Technology Festival (I’m Speaking!)

October 10th, 2012 by Christen

It’s a great time to be a woman in technology!  A once male dominated field – filled with pocket protectors and scientific calculators is now becoming inhabited by fun, fierce and creative women with a lot to say and even more to contribute to technology’s advancement.  That’s why I’m so excited to be participating in the Women Interactive Creative Technology Festival October 12-13th at Spelman College in Atlanta, GA.

Presented by the Art of Genius Creative Technology Series and Spelman College’s Digital Moving Image Salon (DMIS), Women Interactive Creative Technology Festival is a one day interactive technology festival for women of color who produce and share media content.  In keeping with the fast paced nature of technology, the WI Festival will allow college students, collegiate faculty, technology and media professionals the opportunity to interact with innovative technology by following the three pillars in which the festival is based: Interact. Educate. Inspire.

During the festival, I’ll be joining Mattie James – Mattieologie / Fashion Bloggers of Color, Tami Reed of Talking with Tami and Lamar & Roni Tyler of Black and Married with Kids.com discussing ways to “Monetize Your Creativity” and harnessing the power of cashing in on your brand.  We see them on television all the time, people who’ve managed to make a living off of their creativity. But you don’t have to be the next Scarlett Johansson and make $20 million a film to make a living off of your creativity. It is possible for us regular folks to make money off of the content we create. While we won’t be able to show you how to make $20 million off of your compelling piece of content, we can provide you with some tools to begin turning your content into dollars.  For a full schedule of amazing workshops, screenings or panels click here for Women Interactive Programming Schedule http://womeninteractive2012a.sched.org/

How I’m using Instagram stories & Snapchat To Share My Journey

August 4th, 2016 by Christen

It came from out of nowhere, when everyone least expected it.  Just when you were getting comfortable and engaged with the short form sharing platform SnapChat, Instagram releases an update that turned the social sharing world upside down.

Instagram stories

So what is an Instagram story anyways?  According to the official Instagram announcement, Instagram stories a new feature that lets you share all the moments of your day, not just the ones you want to keep on your profile. As you share multiple photos and videos, they appear together in a slideshow format: your story. According to social media savants, strategists and experts alike Instagram stories are new ways to engage with friends and followers on Instagram.  According to my brilliant blogger bae Ty Alexander of Gorgeous in Grey Instagram Stories vs SnapChat means……”Instagram kinda bodies Snapchat.

Instagram stories

Like many of you, the new update left me dazed, confused and contemplating if I really have to adapt to using either or both social platforms in the future.  After further deliberation, my conclusion is a resounding YES!  I’ve figured out how to effectively use Instagram stories and SnapChat to share my journey and hopefully it’ll inspire you to share and create authentic content in a fun and exciting new way too!

Instagram Stories – A little less unfiltered.

Instagram vs snapchat

As much as I love to share my journeys, adventures and moments behind the scenes of building a brand and charging ahead in my career, I often find myself guilty of going days (sometime even weeks) without social shares on Instagram.  The solution:  Snapchat and Instagram stories!  Are you following @DivasandDorks on Instagram? If not, you might want to do that STAT.  As far as Instagram stories are concerned, I’ll be sharing moments behind the blog that’ll give insight into the life of the diva behind DivasandDorks.com.  You’ll find plenty of adventures in travel, cars and tech with a sprinkle of delectable dorkiness in between.

SnapChat – Absolutely Uninhibited.

snapchat

Want to get to know the girl behind the blog?  (This is the part where you frantically search @DivasandDorks on SnapChat and click Add!)  Snapchat is my refuge where I speak to the voices in my head OUT LOUD.  (No there aren’t real voices in my head, but I do think I’m speaking to a group of my imaginary friends, that is, until you guys snap me back and I realize that I’m sharing my boring life with my internet peeps, family and friends! LOL)  On the snap, get ready for a front row seat into the life of Christen.  Lately it’s been a hoot sharing my morning commute karaoke moments, behind the scenes of my tv diva career, family, friends and Sundays at church.

So now you know what to expect from ME, what should I expect to see on your snaps and Instagram stories?  Are you loving the new Instagram update or are you a snapchatter til the bitter end?  Drop your Instagram and snapchat names in the comments and let me know your story below!

Let’s Talk About The Reality Of Making Money Using Social Media On ESSENCE Live

February 4th, 2016 by Christen

Last week, I had the distinct pleasure of talking social media, branding and the business of making money online on ESSENCE Live. Joined by Crissle West of The Read, Whitney White of Naptural 85, we talked about the life of social media entrepreneurs, common misconceptions and how we built wealth online.

Essence Live

Making money online isn’t child’s play.  Nowadays, there’s serious corporate budgets behind social media campaigns, social media influencers as brand ambassadors and more readily available now more than ever before.  Within my first year of blogging, I’ve made money as an ambassador of Samsung, worked with Verizon, Ford and Toyota.  Check out some of my thoughts on monetizing influence with ESSENCE Live host Dana Blair (and a few bonus thoughts / and video) below.

“Are you making money online?”

Yes.  While I’m not (yet) making millions, I make a very comfortable living because of my social media brand online.  While I’m not making it rain anywhere, I’ve been taught that it’s better to be humble and unassuming about how much you make (like Steve Jobs and Oprah) rather than boasting and (probably lying) about your net worth.

“What’s the good/bad of monetizing social media?”

The good part about being your own boss is the freedom you have to do what you love, and you get paid while doing it.  The downside that I didn’t anticipate just how much of that freedom is sucked dry by obsessing over scheduled posts, speaking engagement details and other revenue producing components.

“Final Thoughts?”

People often have the misconception that you have to be a huge social media superstar to make money online.  That’s simply not true.  There are plenty of social media influencers with hundreds of thousands of fans and followers and they’re trying to figure out how to make money, just like the blogger that just began branding online.  The difference between the ones that succeed and the ones that fail is the perception.  If you have a strategic goal of who you want to speak to, what you want to accomplish, when you want to make money and why brands should want to work with you – you’ve catapulted your brand far ahead beyond anyone else.  Social media size doesn’t always matter.

Check out the abbreviated version of last week’s ESSENCE Live segment and let me know what you think below!

How I’m Using My Journey In Technology To Honor Trailblazers And Create A Legacy For The Future

February 1st, 2016 by Christen

In honor of the African-American trailblazers who help shape American history, AT&T celebrates the people, movements and tools empowering positive change. Black History Month is a lot more than 28 days recognizing our history, it’s also a time where we identify how our history has shaped us into who we are today.  Over the years, I’ve found inspiration from many African-American leaders and trailblazers in the community and technology fields.  One innovator that I truly identify with is Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson, the first African-American woman to earn a Ph.D. at MIT.

att 28 days

Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson used her knowledge of physics to foster advances in telecommunications research while working at Bell Laboratories. Dr. Jackson conducted breakthrough basic scientific research that enabled others to invent the portable fax, touch tone telephone, solar cells, fiber optic cables, and the technology behind caller ID and call waiting.

Before women in stem was a huge initiative, Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson was making strides in the industry which has made it easier for many women like me to explore interests in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math.  Because of her efforts, I’ve been able to create moments that matter teaching future entrepreneurs at Michigan State University and conferences around the country.

ATT 28 days innovate state

Recently, I’ve had the opportunity to partner with my alma mater Michigan State University and the Spartan Innovations Entrepreneurial program.  My commitment to the program included speaking to over 100 students of all colors, ages and backgrounds to share my journey in the technology space.  In addition to sharing my journey, I had the pleasure to advise many of them on their entrepreneurial and innovation path.  As a former low-income and high-risk student, it meant the world to me to speak with students who may have a similar education route as I did. Moments like these don’t just matter, but they shape the way you view influence and creating a legacy for others.  Becoming an advocate for Stem and entrepreneurial education is just the beginning to creating a legacy of my own.
