Greetings, from Team USA here in London for the 2012 Olympics!  (Honestly, I still can’t believe I made it — wanna know why? Follow me on Instagram to find out.) The entire city is a buzz with Olympic action, from my arrival to Heathrow Airport up until my arrival to my hotel here in Hammersmith — the Olympic excitement is in the air.  Make sure you keep up with all my Olympic coverage on the Samsung Global Blogger site (below) as well and DivasandDorks.com daily.

My first stop today is the Samsung Global Bloggers Suite where I got my hands on my new Samsung SIII smartphone as well as an abundance of Samsung swag.  Since the next few weeks will be extremely busy, I think I’ll sit back for a minute and check out the SIII and put it to the test.

Divas Do Fashion Daily: Michelle Obama Heads To 2012 Olympics In Style

July 31st, 2012 by Fashion Staff

One thing we can say for sure is that, Michelle Obama exudes her class and elegance globally. No matter what location she’s in, you can clearly see her regal nature, and know that her position must be significant (though you’d have to be living under a rock to not know our FLOTUS on site). Mrs. Obama headed to the 2012 Olympic games where she has already started attending some of the most fascinating, and coveted of the events. Everyone is just waiting for their chance to hug her or receive a handshake, including the athletes themselves.

Michelle first attended a royal event at Buckingham Palace. The event was a Pre-Opening Ceremony reception hosted by the Queen herself. When you’re a person of high stature such as our First Lady, you can wear pieces from collections before they’re available to the public. Michelle wore a 2013 J. Mendel Resort Embroidered Jacket, as well as chiffon pleated skirt from the designer as well.  She then went on to cheer in the stands(next to previous 3- Olympic title holder Dominique Dawes) for Serena Williams at the London Olympics Team USA Tennis Tournament. She rocked a Tracy Reese combo frock, with a polka dot sweater. She also attended the USA vs France game, in which the Dream Team were victorious and hugged NBA baller, Carmelo Anthony while wearing a more casual gray sweater, and khaki pant ensemble.

Eddie The Eagle Is A Movie Filled With Hustle, Courage And Heart!

February 5th, 2016 by Christen

Disclosure: This post was sponsored by Eddie The Eagle through their partnership with POPSUGAR. While I was compensated by POPSUGAR to write a post about Eddie The Eagle, all opinions are my own.

Be tenacious, don’t take no for an answer, fly like Eddie The Eagle. Who knew that the feel-good story about an unlikely Olympian could be applicable to anyone that’s ever had a dream? During a recent advanced screening of “Eddie The Eagle”, I’ve discovered how inspiration can arise when you least expect it and how an unbelievable quest can become achievable with the right frame of mind.

“The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning but taking part; the essential thing in life is not conquering but fighting well.”
– Pierre de Coubertin / Olympic Games Founder

Inspired by true events, Eddie the Eagle is a feel-good story about Michael “Eddie” Edwards (Taron Egerton), an unlikely but courageous British ski-jumper who never stopped believing in himself – even as an entire nation was counting him out. With the help of a rebellious and charismatic coach (played by Hugh Jackman), Eddie takes on the establishment and wins the hearts of sports fans around the world by making an improbable and historic showing at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics.

eddie the eagle

If you love great movies with a loveable “under dog” storyline, Eddie The Eagle is it! Actor Taron Egerton will have you laughing and cheering from your seat leaving you wanting more and more.

Eddie is an excellent example of courage under fire. Even while everyone counted him out and didn’t believe in him, he believed in himself and ultimately made a believer out of everyone. There are plenty of times where I’ve allowed self-doubt to hinder me from becoming my best self. After viewing the movie, I’ve learned that sometimes you have to take a stance and don’t allow other’s opinions to sway you from becoming the best you can be. It’s a movie with unbelievable heart and positivity that’ll truly leave you feeling hopeful about endeavors of your own.

First Impressions: iPhone 6 vs Samsung Galaxy S6

April 23rd, 2015 by Christen

iPhone 6 vs Samsung Galaxy S6

Let’s get ready to rumble!  I recently got my hand on the Samsung Galaxy S6 (Thanks to the good folks at Verizon Wireless) and I have been excited to check out the uncanny similarities (and differences) between the iPhone 6 vs Samsung Galaxy S6.   As an early android adopter (I was the captain of team Android and even scored a cool trip as an ambassador to the 2012 London Olympics) I’m always curious to see just how competitive Apple and Android devices can be.  (Honestly, this is a healthy competition, that at the end the consumers win!)

We’re all about our smartphones and how they enhance our day-to-day activities, so you know I can’t wait to share my favorite user experiences with both devices, but until then, check out this head-to-head comparison and my first impressions of the iPhone 6 vs Samsung Galaxy S6 below.

iPhone 6 vs Samsung Galaxy S6

Displays: Great Meets Greater

  • Galaxy S6 – 5.1-inch QHD flat panel, 2560 x 1440 pixels, 577 pixels per inch (ppi), Super AMOLED display
  • iPhone 6 – 4.7-inch, 1334 x 750 pixels, 326 ppi, LED-backlit IPS LCD

Both screens can get incredibly bright; however, the fact is the Galaxy S6 takes what the iPhone 6 display is good at: brightness, contrast and colours and cranks it up to a whole new level.

iPhone 6 vs Samsung Galaxy S6

Internals:  Let’s Talk Performance

  • Galaxy S6 – Samsung Exynos 7420 – CPU: Quad-core 2.1GHz and 1.5GHz CPUs; GPU: Mali-T760, 3GB RAM
  • iPhone 6 – Apple A8 – CPU: Dual-core 1.4 GHz Cyclone; GPU: PowerVR GX6450, 1GB RAM

iPhone 6 vs Samsung Galaxy S6

Smile For The Camera:  Camera Specs

  • Galaxy S6 – 16 megapixel sensor, F1.9 lens, OIS, autofocus, LED flash – 4k video recording. Front: 5 megapixel sensor, F1.9 lens
  • iPhone 6 – 8 megapixel sensor, F2.2 lens, DIS, Focus Pixels, dual-LED flash – 1080p video recording. Front: 1.2 megapixel sensor, F2.2 lens

The 4k video feature on the Samsung Galaxy S6 is really appealing (especially since I’m trying to step up my YouTube game) But I’ll admit, using my iPhone to film is incredibly easy and has great picture quality as well.  (I think a quality comparison test is in the works soon…)

iPhone 6 vs Samsung Galaxy S6

All About That Bass:  Speaker Comparison

Sounds come through loud and clear with both bottom facing speakers (however, they don’t compare to the HTC front facing speakers).  Don’t expect too much in the bass department though.  If you’re all about that bass, there’s a wide assortment of Bluetooth speakers for that.

iPhone 6 vs Samsung Galaxy S6

Everyone knows that the iPhone 6 will cost you a pretty penny, but did you know that (without contract) the Galaxy S6 is priced even higher:

  • Galaxy S6: $699 (32GB), $799 (64GB) and $899 (128GB)
  • iPhone 6: $649 (16GB), $749 (64GB) and $849 (128GB)

These are just a few of my initial impresions and I can’t wait to follow up and give you more of my thoughts and experiences with both the iPhone 6 vs Samsung Galaxy S6 soon!  Do you have an iPhone 6 or Samsung Galaxy S6? Share your thoughts! Love it? Hate it? Drop your comments below and let us know!

We chatted about everything from accomplishments to milestones and everything in between that made many #My2012Moment for everyone. Some of #My2012Moment (s) definitely included: (Click here for the entire #My2012Moment list…)

  • Attending the 2012 London Olympics

We’re Counting Down Our Favorite Moments Of 2012 #My2012Moment

December 31st, 2012 by Christen

20121231-213243.jpg

It’s true! This year has had truly been an amazing year of highs (and even higher highs) for DivasandDorks.com. From going to 2012 London Olympics to speaking at the National Black MBA Conference and everything in between. While looking forward to a better year than ever before – 2013, we can’t help but to look back at our favorite moments of 2012. Check out below to discover why this has been an unbelievably phenomenal for DivasandDorks.com.

Black Women in Music / Black Women in Hollywood

Thanks to Lincoln & Essence Magazine, we had the chance to rub elbows, talk tech and mingle with some of your favorite starlets, musicians and Hollywood celebrities. Kelly Rowland, Nene Leakes and more checked out the new 2014 Lincoln MKZ during Essence’s Black Women in Music, Grammy weekend in California. Just a week later, Kerry Washington, Shonda Rhimes, Tracee Ellis Ross supported and uplifted fellow thespian sisters during the Black Women in Hollywood event during Oscar weekend in L.A.

20121231-210343.jpg

In The Press – Essence.com, RollingOut.com, BlackEnterprise.com, TheRoot.com, Pose Magazine

This was an incredible year for DivasandDorks.com in the press. As a contributor for Essence.com, I was featured in RollingOut & Pose Magazine highlighting the business behind the blog. BlackEnterprise.com even interviewed an unconventional mentor, (my mother) to reveal the secrets behind successful mentor/mentee relationships. Before the summer was complete, TheRoot.com listed DivasandDorks.com as one of the best blogs of 2012.

20121231-210431.jpg

Induction in Black Enterprise Magazine’s Top Of The Blogosphere’s Best

One of my favorite moments by far included kicking off this year’s Black Bloggers Month as being revealed as the first inductee in the 2012 Blogosphere’s Best for BlackEnterprise.com.

Kayaking in the Pacific Ocean

During an exciting west coast excursion with Toyota, I had the best time camping and even kayaking, (yes, I really kayaked) in the Pacific Ocean all by myself.

20121231-210613.jpg

Diva, Dork and Actress?

This year marked a year of firsts in front the camera, as I starred in Ford’s Escape To New Orleans web series and Samsung’s SmartTV informercial series.

20121231-210739.jpg

Panelist, Host & Keynote Speaker

“When you’ve worked hard, and done well, and walked through that doorway of opportunity, you do not slam it shut behind you. You reach back, and you give other folks the same chances that helped you succeed.” – Michelle Obama

This year has been filled with a lot of hard work, blessings beyond belief, and I was more than excited to share my experiences as a speaker/host/keynote speaker at the Financial (App)titude seminar, Style Bloggers of Color Conference, National Association of Black MBA, Charlotte Chamber of Commerce and the Tom Joyner Family Reunion.

20121231-211128.jpg

Mentorship & Inspiring Young Lives

As an active mentor for The Young Women’s Leadership Schools in NYC and host of D&D’s first “Social Girls Night” – we at Diva And Dorks believe in investing & encouraging young women to pursue their dreams, passions and more (and because of those beliefs, the Divas and Dorks Foundation was officially formed.)

20121231-211029.jpg

Global Ambassador at the 2012 London Olympics

As Samsung’s official ‘Global Ambassador’ – I was privileged to represent Team USA at the 2012 London Olympics. I got the chance to meet Olympians, take in a few of the Olympic games and experience all the unique sights of London, England.

20121231-211215.jpg

Last Train To Paris…

For the first time ever, I experienced a dream getaway to Paris, France from the United Kingdom (during the Olympics). The Effel Tower, The Louvre, Musée d’Orsay, Arc de Triomphe and the Champs-Elysée all were seen and conquered by the diva!

Divas Love To Travel & Love Their Cars!

This has been an amazing year of travel and automotive adoration on DivasandDorks.com. So much so, that our sister sites DivasOnDestinations.com and DivasDriveInHeels.com were born and slated to launch January 2013!

20121231-211324.jpg

Here’s to a wonderful 2012 and an even better 2013!!!!  HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
