Facebook Now Helps Users Save Lives…

May 1st, 2012 by Christen

With users over 901 million-strong social network has adopted more socially conscious policies of late, including an anti-bullying initiative and a referral system for friends expressing suicidal thoughts.  You can now add life saving organ donor registry to the list.

Facebook on Tuesday unveiled an organ donor status option for Timeline, a move designed to help more than 114,000 people in the U.S. and millions more around the world who are waiting for a live-saving heart, kidney or liver transplant.

Mark Zuckerberg told ABC News’ Robin Roberts that the initiative aims to bring the power of social media to a problem that continues to plague organ transplantation — too many people who need organs and not enough who donate.

“What we hope will happen is that by just having this simple tool, we think that people can really help spread awareness of organ donation and that they want to participate in this to their friends,” Zuckerberg said. “That can be a big part of helping solve the crisis that’s out there.”

“Many of those people — an average of 18 people per day –- will die waiting, because there simply aren’t enough organ donors to meet the need,” Facebook notes in a blog entry explaining the move. “Medical experts believe that broader awareness about organ donation could go a long way toward solving this crisis.”

As the video above explains, designating yourself as an organ donor is easy. All you need to do is go to your Timeline, click on “Life Event” and then “Health & Wellness.” Then, you’ll see the option for “Organ Donor.” At that point, you can add when and where you registered and your personal story.

Are you an organ donor?  Would you consider becoming an organ donor now that Facebook makes it easy to register & share you personal story?

For New Yorkers In The Know… The Duane Reader Is The Way To Go!

April 28th, 2012 by Christen

Living in the city that never sleeps, finding the time to shop for last minute essentials is always a challenge. Luckily, when you find a coupon in your mailbox that you can use towards items that you plan on buying anyways, it makes shopping a little easier & rewarding. Today, I received a flyer announcing the grand re-opening of my neighborhood Duane Reade location, and the timing couldn’t have been better. First stop, checking out the Spring Edition of The Duane Reader online…

(Sometimes, you gotta have a plan & the Duane Reader online shows you the latest and greatest available at Duane Reade – but it also let’s you create a digital shopping list too.) From almond milk to nail polish, I had a shopping list filled with random buys & the moment I stepped into the revamped Duane Reade store floor with my digital shopping list on my iPhone in tow – it was ON!

First stop in the store, grabbing The Duane Reader off the shelve & a cart for all my quick purchases. Next, aisle by aisle I picked up my favorite products spotted in the Duane Reader (at fabulous sale prices, might I add…)  Of course, I had to head straight to the beauty aisle to grab a few bright shades, including the Red Carpet LED Gel Polish (in a variety of colors) on sale for $7.49 with my Flex Rewards card. I also couldn’t resist grabbing a few of my favorite Essie top coats and Sally Hansen products too.

Onto checking off my digital shopping list, while grabbing a few essentials like bottled water… actually, I have a Britta water filter pitcher at home — so stocking up on a few extra filters from Duane Reade was the way to go!

Lastly, grabbing a few treats for my pup Phoebe rounded out this shopping trip & towards the registers for checkout.

The fast and friendly team at Duane Reade, got me squared away with my purchases & I was in and out of this shopping experience in minutes.

If you’re in the Harlem area, definitely check out the newly remodeled Duane Reade on w. 145th Street – with wider aisles, brighter lights & a fully stocked / expanded food selection it’s the way to go whether you’re shopping for beauty items or groceries. Why Your Relationship & Social Media Won’t Mix…

April 26th, 2012 by Tech Staff

Relationships are hard enough. But the rise of social media — where sharing private moments is encouraged, and provocative and confessional postings can help build a following — has created a new source of friction for couples: what is fair game for sharing with the world?

If one half of a couple is not interested in broadcasting the details of a botched dinner or romantic weekend, Facebook postings or tweets can create irritation, embarrassment, miscommunication and bruised egos.

After a few relationship-testing episodes, some spouses have started insisting that their partners ask for approval before posting comments and photographs that include them. Couples also are talking through rules as early as the first date (a kind of social media prenup) about what is O.K. to share. Even tweeting about something as seemingly innocent as a house repair can become a lesson in boundary-setting.

“There is a standard negotiation that takes place in lots of relationships, but now there are multiple audiences watching,” said Lee Rainie, the director of the Pew Research Center’s Internet and American Life Project, which explores technology and human behavior. “There will be awkward moments, even more so if that negotiation is played out in public.”

Interviews with more than a dozen couples suggest that disagreements over how much to share are common.

Discover The Top Hotspot For Stolen Cell Phones (You’d Be Surprised…)

April 25th, 2012 by Tech Staff

With $30 billion worth of phones lost in the U.S. every year, we bet your phone has contributed to the heap at one time or another.  How many times have you seen a Facebook status update that says something along the lines of, “Holy crap, last nite was crazy weird. Lost my phone ugGGGhhhhhhHHHHHH. Send me your numbers or else we’re no longer friends.”

You’d be surprised on the places where people get their phones stolen.  Then again, bars and nightclubs are not among the top places that people lose their phones. You should be most careful about dropping your device in coffee houses, pizza and church, among others. And keep an eye on your phone during Christmas and New Year’s Eve, too — those are the times of year Americans are most likely to misplace their mobiles.

Divas Drive In Heels: Social Media Believes in the Motor City and so should you!

April 24th, 2012 by Christen

Twitter opened a new office in downtown Detroit on earlier this month to serve marketers — including automakers — and ad agencies in the region.

Twitter’s emphasis on Detroit coincides with stellar sales for the auto industry. Americans bought 1.4 million cars and trucks in March, a 13% jump over the same month in 2011 and the most sold since August 2007, according to Edmunds.com. That rise comes despite gas prices that flirt with $4 per gallon and reflects pent-up demand among consumers, analysts say.  Earlier this month, during the New York International Auto – The Women’s Automotive Association International discussed the Power of Social Media with some of the auto industry’s social media powerhouse leaders.  Sponsored by Mercedes Benz, the Power of Social Media panel included the following participants:

Melissa Newell – Social Media Specialists / Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC

Jennifer Suzuki – President / e-Dealer Solutions

Lemore Hecht – Social Media Manager / Hertz Corporation

Kate Alini – Social Media Manager / BMW of North America

Dale Durrett – Director of Marketing Solutions / LinkedIn

Kim Kyaw – Social Media Manager / Land Rover North America

Hedy Popson – Executive Vice President / Productions Plus – The Talent Shop

Discussions of social media platforms including Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook and more were the hot topics of panelists, as well as insights into how your favorite automotive brands use these platforms to interact with you – the consumer.  More and more auto brands are investing in the Power of Social Media – just ask Facebook!  Facebook’s Head Of Automotive, Global Vertical Marketing  - Doug Frisbie shares his insight on how social media is a necessary component in the automotive industry as a whole.  “Today’s automotive industry is more competitive; however it’s still a people business.  Connecting with loyal customers and their friends can create a valuable advantage for your brand. Integrating Facebook into your existing marketing channels and leveraging Facebook Pages, ads and sponsored stories will help you capture this advantage and let people drive your marketing.”

Does automotive brand interaction on social media influence your perception of brands and their products?  Does tweeting with your favorite brands, influence a purchase?

Think Like A Man is #1 At The Box Office & Now Available On Your iPhone!

April 24th, 2012 by Christen

“Think Like a Man,” based on Steve Harvey’s dating-advice best-seller, debuted as the top weekend draw with $33 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. That’s almost double what studio executives had expected for the Sony Screen Gems ensemble movie, which features Michael Ealy, Taraji P. Henson and Gabrielle Union.

Produced for about $13 million “Think Like a Man” took in nearly that much on opening day Friday alone, with business getting even better on Saturday. Sony executives had figured the movie might pull in about $17 million for the whole weekend.  Now you can take “Think Like A Man” with you on your smartphone with the Think Like A Man iPhone App!

To help bring awareness to the movie, you can play the dating game with the Think Like A Man App for iPhone. This app lets you play along with characters straight from the movie. You choose either a female or male date and go through a series of comments throughout a lunch, dinner, and desert. The responses range from funny to serious. Make sure you choose the appropriate answer to advance your date. If you need help with an answer you can ask for help from Cedric’s Words of Wisdom which will have you rolling in laughter. The app is FREE and available in the Apple App Store.

Have you checked out ‘Think Like A Man’ in theaters this weekend?  What did you think?  Did you like it enough to download the app?

Elle Magazine Has What Your Facebook Friends “LIKE”

April 18th, 2012 by Tech Staff

Elle has launched a shoppable trend guide on Facebook in the latest of several ecommerce initiatives within the magazine industry.

The guide, embedded as a tab on Elle‘s Facebook page, invites shoppers to navigate across six editorially chosen spring trends, including floral, nautical and ladylike.

Users can click “love,” “want, “own” or “buy!” on each product page. By default, all interactions with the app are shared automatically on their Facebook Timeline — so even if users don’t make a purchase, they can inadvertently draw curious friends in to interact with the app. Users can also click to buy each product on the retailer’s website.

This makes it easy for users to interact, and allows Elle to turn those interactions into marketing promotions, as every action is shared with a user’s friends.

Kevin O’Malley, chief revenue officer and publisher at Elle, said that the app is less about pushing sales and more about leveraging recommendations among friends.

So you can’t do much shopping within the app, but your “LIKES” could influence potential sales & promotions in Elle magazine?  (*Goes to eBay Fashion app to get my shopping fix…*)  We’ll see how this plays out and if your friends “LIKE” what they see on the Elle Facebook page

Have you checked out Elle’s Facebook page yet?  What do you think?
