Learn To Code And Bring Your Favorite Toys To Life With LEGO BOOST

January 17th, 2017 by Christen

Who wouldn’t love to make a real life robot?  I remember growing up with my favorite building blocks and creating everything from skyscrapers to designing mobile phones accessories.  If you haven’t had the chance to construct with the favorite building blocks for children of all ages recently, this new tech-infused update will have you running to your nearest toy store immediately!

Last week, the LEGO Group announced LEGO BOOST, a supercharged building and coding set that lets kids of all ages bring their LEGO creations to life by adding movement, sound and personality. Unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, LEGO BOOST combines the endless play opportunities of a traditional LEGO set with an endless variety of movement and sound capabilities made possible through an easy-to-use, app-based coding environment.

Using familiar LEGO elements and simple coding language, LEGO BOOST delivers an intuitive approach and opportunities for quick success.

Powered by a Move Hub, a LEGO stud-covered brick with built-in tilt sensor upon which children can add LEGO elements, motors and a sensor that combines color and distance detection, LEGO BOOST brings movement to any LEGO creation. The set includes building instructions for five diverse models; Vernie the Robot, Frankie the Cat, the Guitar 4000, the Multi-Tool Rover 4 (M.T.R.4), and the Autobuilder, each designed to give children the basic building and coding skills needed to express their creativity by personalizing whatever they build.

Can’t get enough of LEGO gear? Check out unique LEGO wear ideas here.

Coding Brings Your Toy to Life

LEGO BOOST introduces children to coding through a free downloadable app that contains the guidance, building instructions and simple coding commands to bring to life five LEGO creations, one at a time. Much like building with LEGO bricks, children build behaviors and actions by linking digital coding blocks in an easy-to-understand horizontal layout. To further personify the experience, LEGO BOOST lets children add voice recordings to their creations, adding personality without requiring spelling and typing. The app also includes more than 60 activities designed to inspire additional building, coding and play.

Creative Canvas Lets You Boost Any LEGO Creation

To further inspire creative building and coding, the LEGO BOOST app includes a “creative canvas” that includes basic building instructions for three simple base models that children can use to customize their own LEGO creations. The three bases available at launch include: a walking base for making animals like a dragon or a pony, a driving base for building vehicles like a dune buggy or rover, and an entrance base so that children can make their own castle, fort, or even a futuristic space station. (Take your creation on the go with a new LEGO bagbackpack or satchel.)  Once children are comfortable with building and coding the various LEGO BOOST models, they can use the kit to “boost” any LEGO creation – from LEGO CITY and LEGO  Friends to LEGO NINJAGO and The LEGO BATMAN Movie.

LEGO BOOST Includes:

  • 3 BOOST Bricks:
    • Move Hub with built-in tilt sensor
    • Combination color & distance sensor
    • Interactive motor
  • 843 LEGO elements
  • Playmat, calibrated to the app, designed to facilitate mini challenges to practice simple coding trials

  • Free, downloadable app is iOS and Android tablet compatible

LEGO BOOST uses 6 AAA batteries. Alkaline batteries are recommended, but rechargeable batteries can be used, though may result in weaker power output.

LEGO BOOST will be available at most stores and online shopping sites where toys are sold, through select consumer electronics retailers, and at LEGO Stores and in the second half of 2017 and will have a suggested retail price of $159.99 USD $159.99 (EUR) and $199.99 (CAD). latte art gadget ripple

Latte art is a method of preparing foam-topped coffee with embellished drawings/illustrations in the top layer of foam.  It’s widely popular and creates an additional sensory experience for caffeine lovers worldwide.  However, there’s one CES 2016 company that wants to take latte art to a whole new level of personalization with the new Ripper Maker app.

Steam CC, the innovative IoT company behind the Ripple Maker, a revolutionary new device that produces ANY image or message (known as a Ripple) onto a foam-topped coffee, has unveiled the Coffee Ripples App which pairs with the device to allow the “end-drinker” to create anything they can imagine onto a cappuccino or latte.

The Ripple Maker has been wowing coffee lovers in NYC with its ability to produce high-res Ripples onto lattes, cappuccinos, or any foam-topped drink in a matter of seconds. Now the Coffee Ripples App empowers anyone with a smartphone to turn ordinary beverages into extraordinary experiences by creating inspiring Ripples from any image, photo or message they choose or create.

The Coffee Ripples App makes creating and sending a personal image as simple as creating a social media post. The app functionality allows the user to choose an existing image from Ripples’ extensive content library, or to submit an image from their camera roll which will be transformed into foam art at the venue. Users can edit, scale, filter and even add text to the image before they send.

Wondering If You’re Pregnant? There’s A Bluetooth Pregnancy Test For That! #CES2016

January 6th, 2016 by Tech Staff

Technology is changing the way we do everyday things – including the way women learn about pregnancy.  The first-ever digital pregnancy test that works with an app has just been revealed at CES and it aims to make the pregnancy process less daunting, thanks to a little more automation.  Say hello to First Response Pregnancy Pro stick, the physical test updates the brand’s Cycle & Ovulation app with the latest results in real time.

bluetooth pregnancy test first response

The at-home pregnancy test company First Response announced at International CES the first-ever Bluetooth-enabled pregnancy test, which syncs up with an app and houses all test results and dates in one spot.

bluetooth pregnancy test

Considering multiple pregnancy tests are often used to detect the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), which is found in the urine of pregnant women, spotting the hormone early allows her to know sooner and initiate prenatal care as close to conception as possible. This is First Response’s attempt at innovating and streamlining that process.

bluetooth pregnancy test First response app

The First Response Pregnancy Pro stick works alongside the app, which helps to determine a woman’s most fertile days, based on information added by the user. The app also houses articles, tips and resources, as well as distractions such as videos and other visuals while she waits for test results.

bluetooth pregnancy test First response app

The app can be used beyond determining the results, too; once pregnant, the built-in tools predict due date, pregnancy milestones, questions to ask the doctor, reminders about appointments and updates about the baby’s growth.

Like a traditional pregnancy test, the First Response Pregnancy Pro stick can only be used once. While a standard pregnancy test may coast about $8.99 to $15.95, the Bluetooth-enabled option has a suggested retail price between $14.99 and $21.99 (but you can grab a $3 off coupon here.) The app will be available as a free download for iOS and Android users this spring.

Would you use a Bluetooth-enabled pregnancy test during your journey to parenthood?  Share your comments below?

Streaming Entertainment Goes Next Level

The biggest names in video streaming — Netflix and YouTube — will share huge news at CES. That alone tells you video services will have a large presence at the show, and the launch of Sling TV at last year’s show was definitely a sign of things to come.  Technology is changing the way we consume entertainment and you can expect new trends in streaming that will impact the way you watch documentaries, movies and your favorite shows soon!

Homes Getting Smarter Than Ever Before

The home automation phenomena may not have taken off like wildfire yet, but that doesn’t mean smart home technologies are slowing down anytime soon.   Certainly there will be plenty of manufacturers boasting HomeKit and Amazon Echo compatibility, but it’ll be the practical, useful gadgets (think: sensors that detect floods or breakage, smart locks, etc) that will be the true breakouts this year.

Let’s Get Virtual

Virtual reality is poised for a huge breakout in 2016; we know this. The debut of Oculus Rift is imminent (and the latest version will be at CES), services (including Facebook) are already supporting 360-degree video and simpler viewers like Google Cardboard have whetted the appetite for immersive experiences.  And let’s not forget about VR’s cousins: 360-degree video and augmented reality. Camera systems — both simple and sophisticated — for capturing dynamic footage will be a big focus, and augmented reality systems could see a huge boost in popularity before you know it.
